PostHeaderIcon A weather forecasting center in Naga College Foundation helps Camarines Sur residents

The Typhoon Preparedness Center (TPC) was established six months ago in the Naga College Foundation. Headed by David Michael Padua, a UP geography graduate residing in Naga City, the center had been a source of information about the weather.

Functioning like the country’s Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA,) the national weather adviser and forecaster, TPC had been giving local weather tips to Camarines Sur, a Bicol province known for its high frequency of storms. During Typhoon Santi, the center issued weather forecasting advisories every three hours in their website: Typhoon2000.com

Relying on the data from foreign weather agencies, the center shares supplemental weather information locally alerting the public and the government when foul weather is coming. In addition, Padua and his assistants organize seminars to educate students, teachers, government officials and the laymen on the fundamentals of early warnings during a weather disturbance.

It is a big help that TPC is able to give valuable news about incoming typhoons, thus helping people in the area to get ready. The NCF-sponsored weather center is trying to get the cooperation of the media to help spread their information. PostHeaderIcon Archbishop Legaspi airs opposition versus 5th district creation in Camarines Sur

Reminding the laity of the maneuvers done by elected officials to push their political agenda, Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi expressed criticism in his pulpit message on October 25, 2009 in the division of Camarines Sur from 4 to 5 districts.

Made possible by legislation RA 9716, the redistricting of Camarines Sur into 5 districts will make it possible for pro-administration politicians like Dato Arroyo (son of Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo) and Rolando Andaya (known supporter of the president) to pursue congressional seats without having to compete with each other as they run for office in the coming 2010 election. --- Vox Bikol (11/01/09)

Sponsored by old time politician Luis Villafuerte, the legislative move is looked upon by Msgr. Legaspi as self-serving and does not benefit the public well. Many citizens expressed similar opposition for the questionable creation of a congressional district which does not satisfy “constitutional requirements.”

In his homily, Legaspi reminds the people to be watchful of clever reelectionist politicians----Have they accomplished something good for the community? Have they used their positions to enrich themselves? Are these politicians greedy, arrogant, and self-serving to the detriment of the people? PostHeaderIcon Camarines Sur State Agricultural College named as State University

The school in Camarines Sur which started as an elementary learning institution for boys during the American occupation has now been designated as the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA.)

Expected to modernize the teaching and practice of agricultural science in the area, the school, located in Pili, Camarines Sur, is now named a state university upon approval of a house bill signed by Pres. Glora M. Arroyo last Monday, October 12, 2009.

“The newly-incorporated university is expected to "provide both advanced instruction and research in agriculture and allied technological sciences including education, arts and related sciences."---Vox Bicol (10/18/09, Soltes, J C.)

June 8, 1974-September 11, 2009

UP Ibalon Bicol and friends express their heartfelt sympathy to the Loy and Fe Espano as they grieve the untimely death of their child Jason “Jay” Espano of Charleston, South Carolina. Jay, 25, was loving brother to Allan Espano, married to Katherine of Jacksonville, Florida and to Brian Espano, married to Sarah of Torrington, Connecticut.

A computer enthusiast, amiable Jay was the proud uncle of two beautiful nieces, Elize and Heide. He was survived by his affectionate parents, doting aunts, uncles, and cousins who reside in Maryland, California, Canada, and the Philippines. The Espanos are originally from Nabua, Camarines Sur in Bicol. We request readers to pray for Jay’s eternal repose.

PostHeaderIcon Naga raid yields shabu valued at P3.4 million

After two months of careful surveillance, a raid of a house in San Felipe, Naga City yielded shabu worth approximately P3.4 million. 460 grams of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) together with money amounting to P15,000 was seized from the Ali Diamaodin, Diomair Diamaodin, and Juhaiver Diamaodin, both from Marawi City, Mindanao. The arrest of the three was a result of a buy-bust transaction made by police operatives of the city. (Photo Credit: www.jcsd.org)

PostHeaderIcon Celebrating Baao Pintakasi 2009 in Las Vegas Nevada in style!

Before August 24, St. Bartholomew, the revered patron saint of Baao, Camarines Sur must be very happy. The itinerant apostle who traveled and evangelized near the coast of Caspian Sea, Persia, Armenia, Egypt, and as far as India was remembered early this year in America.







Before the feast day, in Las Vegas, his special memory was celebrated. Saint Bartholomew had been venerated not only by the Roman Catholic Church but by other Christian denominations such as the Eastern Christian Orthodox Church, the Coptic Christians, Anglicans, and Lutheran Churches.







In the 1st century, the martyred follower of Jesus was flayed and beheaded for his heroic Christian deeds. For that, Baaoenos had not forgotten to honor St. Bartholomew's valor, faith, and religious conviction. That was why last Saturday, August 8, 2009, in Las Vegas, Nevada, the fabulous Pintakasi 2009 pulled earlier than Baao's fiesta back home to glorify his name. A solemn mass officiated by three priests ushered in the affair.













The grand event with lots of surprises was attended by an eager crowd of Baaoenos and friends who traveled far and wide to join the fellowship that certainly had the trimmings of the traditional merry celebration of the Bicol town. A good number came to join the fun, but certainly, there were those who in their absence were sorely missed.













The feast started with a concelebrated thanksgiving prayer that united the attendees and set the festive tone of the grand occasion. In a capacious hall decorated by balloons, they gathered in intimate togetherness, partaking the food and joys of being glued as a community---bonded in ways that only they could ever fully express.







Pintakasi 2009 was particularly dazzling for not only did the day gather hundreds of spritely guests, friends and relatives, but it brought something impressively memorable in Baao’s name. The hosptality is immense. Young and old, they came to share camaraderie and spread around friendship in a place far removed from the quaint town of their origin in Camarines Sur.









Having seen familiar beautiful faces, those who attended huddled in animated “kurumustahan,” in what could be regarded as plain fun within the fleeting time frame of an action-filled weekend. Rinconada dialect must have been the hot currency of conversations which heightened the closeness of the Baao herd.





The hall had that electrifying buzz. Talented Baaoenos showcased their dances and songs. Some went for a refreshing deep in a pool with the children. Others cracked their novel “pangisihan” to the delight of the crowd.







There were those who were content sipping chilled wine in a friendly round table, thumping their feet to the candence of nearby music. A group laughed it out loud in the parlor games that brought winners and losers in an exciting competition of agility and wits.







The bright sun, nearer than usual to the hearts of many, drenched Nevada, sans nieve (snow) for which it was named, at the peak of summer---Surely, it was to the delight of those who came for the Pintakasi whose festive spirit had taken root on their senses.





The memories they brought home this year would hum in their thoughts like fine-tuned mellow music till the next fiesta brings them back again in a cycle of unity and goodwill.
