PostHeaderIcon First Pinoy diocesan priest in Kuwait

On October 9, 2009, Fr. Ruben Barrameda of the Legazpi Diocese in Bicol was designated to serve in the Apostolic Vicariate of Kuwait. Supposed to be the first diocesan priest to take official religious duty in the Middle East and Gulf area, the Bicolano clergyman would be under the jurisdiction of the vicariate of Kuwait.

A mass in tribute to Our Lady of Penafrancia was celebrated by Fr. Barrameda together with Bishop Lucio B. Quiambao of Legazpi City. Joined by Fr. Rolando Panesa and Fr. Angelos, the solemn Eucharistic celebration was attended by the Philippine Ambassador to Kuwait Ricardo Endaya, government dignitaries, and about 1,000 members of the Catholic congregation.

PostHeaderIcon Prelate rues over slanted coverage of Penafrancia fiesta

When Tong Pilar, my friend and classamate in New Jersey told me that a brawl erupted during the Traslacion in the Penafrancia celebration in Naga City, I felt sad. I thought this year’s fiesta was marred by a few irresponsible people of Maogmang Lugar.

My friend’s story of seeing in TV a priest assaulted during the Friday procession was very disconcerting. As far as I could recall, such disdainful behavior did not happen when I was growing up in that peaceful city. The bad news came to New York in tandem with the local government promoting a secular program of public drinking, gay beauty contests, and other “demeaning” activities that wasn’t in synch with the fiesta’s religious purpose. With civic activities that tend to denigrate Ina, I thought, Penafrancia had gone to the dogs.

Daet Bishop Gilbert Gacera however had a different take on the issue. He said the Penafrancia celebration this year was supposed to be as peaceful as before. It was the media who sensationalized the melee which painted an ugly picture of the whole event. The isolated incident was aired in the internet and in major national TVs as though it dominated the celebration. This he said wasn’t true.

As a result of the bad publicity, Bicolanos were unduly portrayed in a bad light. The peaceful procession was made to appear that it ended in trouble. Bishop Garcera was saddened by the lopsided coverage of the fiesta which came at a time when the Catholic Church made effort to make Ina’s tribute more spiritually meaningful at the eve of her tercenary. PostHeaderIcon Clash between Penafrancia tradition & the secular festivities of Naga City government

With the backing of the Archdiocese of Caceres and the Roman Catholic clergy, religious groups of Naga City complained to the Naga City government for reneging on a bilateral agreement to ban activities that didn’t reflect the faith-based observance of the Penafrancia fiesta. In part, the letter sent by the laity to City Mayor Jesse Robredo read:

“We are disappointed and dismayed when we saw the calendar of activities prepared by the city government of Naga published in its widely distributed Viva Naga, Viva Bicolandia pamphlet. Viva Naga and Viva Bicolandia Festival include activities that have been banned within the novena on moral grounds. In the joint statement, it is very clear that pageants and beer plazas should not be held within the period of the novena.”---Vox Bicol (09/13/09)

The letter was sent by concerned citizens representing groups like the Archdiocesan Council of the Laity, Apostleship of Prayer, Our Lady of Peñafrancia Association, Holy Name Society, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Mother Butlers' Guild, Parish Renewal Experience (PREX), Couples of Christ, Pastoral Council of Bagumbayan Sur, Knights of Columbus, Children of Mary, and Visita Domiciliaria among others, airing their disapproval to government-sponsored revelries like gay beauty pageants, street parties, and drinking fests.

Demanding for accountability from those who plan and implement the highly secular civic celebration, the church-affiliated groups considered the vulgar activities disrespectful to the tradition of prayer to God and Ina that the Bicol-wide Penafrancia celebration is known for.(Photo Credit: Jerry Lim Lee) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Ika sanang Namomotan---"No Mas Amor” sa Bikol

No Mas Amor Que El Tuyo

No mas amor que el tuyo
O Corazon divino
El Pueblo Filipino
Te da su Corazon
En templos y en hogares
Te invoque nuestra lengua
Tu reinaras sin mengua
De Aparri hasta Jolo

Coro:
Ha tiempo que esperamos
Tu imperio en el Oriente
La Fe de Filipinas
Es como el sol ardiente,
Como la roca firme
Inmensa como el mar
La iniquidad no puewde
Ser de estas Islas duenas
Que izada en nuestros montes
Tu celestial ensena
Las puertas del infierno
No prevaleceran.

Haloy kaming naghanap kan kantang Bikol na iyan. Maski ang mga pading hinapotan mi, dae aram. Sa kahurian, si Joceline man sana an naka-kua kan hinahanap niya. Sa kabo’otan ni Fr. O. Largoza kan Nabua, Camarines Sur, nataw’an siya nin kopya kan kantang kan sadit pa tanda niya. Dae naghaloy, kan nagbisita si Joceline sa Nueva York kan sarong bulan, kinanta mi ang Bikol na No Mas Amor. Magayonon! (Photo Credit: Inspirational)

Uya tabi an No Mas Amor in Bikol---na satong sa bo’ot na kinakanta para ipagpugay ang kalinigan kan puso ni Jesus.

Ika Sanang Namomotan

Ika sanang Namomotan
O Diosnon na puso
An banwang Pilipino
Dusay sa puso mo
Sa simbahan sa harong man
Dila mi ika ina-arang
Namaghade kang tunay
Sa Aparri sagcod Jolo.

Coro:
Haloy mi nang pinagmawot
Paghade mo sa Siragnan
An Pagtubod niamo
Siring sa mainit na aldaw
Gapo baga kapusog
Dagat baga kahiwas
Di mangyari an karatan
Maghade sa kaporoan
Kun tindog sa Kabukiran
Langitnon mong tanda'an
An bilog na infierno
Di mangyari nanggad. =0=

PostHeaderIcon Exemplary Fil-Am Leadership: The shining civic spirit in Angelita L. Pena

by Augusto F. Mesia, M.D.
Astoria, New York

Angelita de Leon-Pena’s job experience comes from years of sterling service in the corporate world and from human interactions that count. For many years she has worked as the assistant vice-president of New York Mellon Bank after serving in Corporate Trust Department of US Bank, the State Street Bank, Citibank (NY,) and the Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Naga City, Philippines.

The affable lady that I know since our days in Naga City has surely greater knowledge than what she knows about the financial health of America. She is now the incoming president of the Bicol National Association of America (BNAA,) a coalition of organizations of Bicolanos across the United States.

For many Bicolanos from California to New York, from Boston to Miami, from Hawaii to Alaska to Georgia these milestones are miniscule compared to Lita's desire, like her ardent friends in BNAA and the Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotees Asssociation (OLPDA) to serve the community.

More than the drudgery of plain living away from native Bicol, it is her passion to come up with something magnanimous for Filipinos in the enlarging diaspora. Her lively wit and sophistication are never dull. She is a fountain of inspiration---especially when she starts asking some gritty questions like, “How can we unite all Bicolanos in America? What can we do to help the people of the Philippines?”

Filipino-Americans (Fil-Ams) know the next president of the BNAA has her views. When she deals with issues of utmost importance, she stirs the pot with rationality and wisdom. As her impeccable credentials show, the beneficient angel from Naga does her civics well.

Lita is busy laying the ground work to host a reunion which will draw Bicolanos to the Northeast in a July 17-19, 2009 convention. The group’s reunion next month will tie-up bonds, recharge friendships, and drum up fresh humanitarian projects for the organization. With fellow-Bicolanos working with her, she will gather kababayans, Fil-Ams, their friends, and families from all over America and elsewhere for a tastefully planned merry get-together.

Would you believe you’re invited? Or would you believe we're all invited? BNAA, like OLPDA, is a welcoming group ready to open its arms. In a giveaway expression of real hospitality, the reunion is open to as many Fil-Ams as possible particularly Bicolanos.

In 2002, Lita walked as the grand marshal of the Philippine Day Organizing Committee in Passaic, NJ. Shunning self-importance, she worked hard as a board member in the well-known Philippine Independence Day Committee (PIDC) of New York City. With unrelenting duties at home and in the community, she proved to be an dedicated adviser of the Bicolandia National Association of America of the Eastern Seaboard, USA (BNAA-Eastern Seaboard) and OLPDA.

The leader with a beaming persona gave away precious time in 2003 to be the overall chairwoman of the Philippine American Friendship Committee, Inc. To forge unity the following year, Lita assumed headship of the Philippine American Friendship, Inc. Community Development Center (PAFCOM – CDC.) What more can one ask? She was a respected and popular president of BNAA-Eastern Seaboard, and the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) Alumni Association.

Serving as this year’s NAFFA’s Filvote Chair for Hudson County in New Jersey, Lita, the radiant civic leader of New Jersey can surely deliver the goods. On her gaudy sleeves rest a treasure trove of public service accomplishments that matter---those which draw people to be united with the community.

Consistently praised for her energy, Lita was appointed by Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy as board of director of the Jersey City Training & Development Center in last year. As two-term president of the Greenville Fil-Am Bowling League and past board of director & vice-president of the Folklorico Dance Company of New York, she organized OLPDA of the Tri-State Area in the early 1990’s which encouraged faith-based veneration of Ina in America, the mother-patroness of the Bicol Region.

For all the sacrifices she endured, Lita didn’t lack the admiration of her kababayans who trust her ability. The Philippine New York Jaycees gave her the outstanding community leadership award in 2003. Along with Peng, her devoted husband, she was named by the New Jersey Parent Foundation as the 2000 Parent of the Year---a coveted distinction that brought sparks of inspiration to family-oriented souls across races and backgrounds.

As a keynote speaker, in 2002, the Bicol Canada, Inc, (Etobicoke, Canada) presented Lita a certificate of appreciation for her selfless service to Bicolanos as she helped improve the quality of life in Jersey City and in the Bicol Region.

A dynamic lady leader who kindly encouraged Filipinos to embark on community undertakings, Lita was given the Women’s Achiever’s Award by Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and by the Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League of Jersey City. She received a certificate of appreciation from the mayor citing her outstanding commitment and continuous support for the Filipino American Veterans Organization of New Jersey. Given a service award in 2007, she was likewise cited for brilliant leadership and dedication by the BNAA-Eastern Seaboard.

Lita graduated from the Colegio de Sta. Isabel High School in Naga City. She finished her college education at the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) in Manila, Philippines where she earned her accounting and business administration degree.

Married to Eufronio Pena of Naga City, she is a proud and loving mom of three wonderful children--- Eduardo, married to Marsha Rafanan, Ysadora, married to Alan Clarin and Eric, married to Ivy Damian. Lita and Peng, are happy grandparents to Alexa, Jonah, Aivery, Drew and Jaxsen. To better know this lady with an amazing civic spirit, why don’t you attend the grand BNAA convention and join the OLPDA? It will be fun for she will be there. (Photo Credits: Lita Pena/ AFM) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Echo Park, Los Angeles USA Penafrancia Fiesta

by Rafael Garcia & Totie Mesia

“Are you from Bicol?” the excited lady beside me shouted. It was the same question I asked the smiling guy I met at the church door as I stretched my neck for the familiar faces in the gathering of people.

I didn’t realize what I was up to with those people I met that afternoon. After the foodfest which brought to recall mom’s home-style cooking, I bonded with new friends that I couldn’t have met if not for Ina."

"It must be the same date, rain or shine, that fiestas had been recalled in many states and cities across the continental United States. With all the Bicolanos and their respective organizations from California to Chicago to Hawaii to Virginia, one might wonder how many Filipino-Americans pay tribute to the patroness of the Bicol region."

"As the chills of autumn set in and the soft slanted rays of the sun became more apparent in the early evening, a pork roast, a bottle of cold San Miguel beer and social dancing could well define the Penafrancia fun." ---Penafrancia in America =0=

PostHeaderIcon Wowowee, Penafrancia fiesta, & the 229 people injured in the Black Nazarene procession of Quiapo

The 13-hour religious parade snaked its way in the city drawing thousands of religious believers to walk in supplication until the revered black icon of Jesus was returned in the Quiapo Church on Friday, January 9, 2009 in Manila. I read there were 229 people who were injured during the procession. I couldn’t help recall the days when such spoiler incidents almost never happened.

As a kid who grew up in Naga City, the Traslacion, a similar feast honoring the Virgin of Penafrancia, was memorably peaceful. Lately however, like the Quiapo spectacle, the traslacion and fluvial procession in Bicol had been getting flak. People had not been as reverential and behaved as before. In September 2008, a rumble, a stone-throwing incident, and hostage-taking emergency in a bus dampened the fiesta in Naga.

Rarely were there scuffles and tramplings that put our limbs at risk in the crowd. That was in the past. Had a melee occured, our parents would have disallowed us into coming close to religious gatherings. We would have stayed at home to pay our private homage to God, in lieu of taking part in a dangerous holiday celebration.

But times have changed. The annual feast of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo has grown so big---almost unmanageable. The faith-based observance have lost part of its sanctity as people of plural intentions join. In spite of the Catholic clergy’s attempt to make the plebeian celebration a simple pious expression of faith, unintended incidents do happen. The open folk tradition of worship and contrition which borders to idolatry (as critics warned) has been marred by melee in a huge crowd with poor control.

People suffering from hypertensive spells and fainting due to excessive heat are getting more common. Difficulty of breathing from asthma has been reported in a number of weary processionistas. Contusions and abrasions caused by pushing and bare-foot walking have brought people rushing to hospital emergency rooms for treatment. The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) reports of at least 23 people suspected to have suffered a heart attack. Surely, these are distractions which can be avoided. We need to act smart to prevent a full-blown mayhem.

Before the next Black Nazarene procession turns into a wholesale failure of crowd control--- as hideous as the Wowowee stampede in February 2006, those who organize these events must devise a better plan. The Catholic clergy needs to modify the observance of the tradition. Nearly a thousand police officers and 300 PNRC volunteers are not enough to cope with the needs of the tight crowd.

In Wowowee, at least 74 innocent lives were lost in a recklessly planned TV extravaganza, most of them, trampled, brushed aside, and forgotten without the benefit of justice. (Photo Credits: Nesty Ocampo; Bobmani34; Nesty Ocampo) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Paradetown Naga: Bugles Blare & the Girls Sashay

Listen to the call of the street. Open your eyes. Feel the movement. Watch the sun and sky. Touch the air. Hear the steps. Smell the scents. Close your cellphone. Listen!

The cacophony of bugles and the blare of a giant microphone, the tinkle of a lyre and the harmony of a native song---there they are passing. In high boots and gaudy costumes, pretty girls with wands on their hands and feathers on their hair, sashaying to the beat of the drums. Shiny stardust on their eyes, they smile. So pleasing and amusing, the awesome spectacle has just begun.---Totie Mesia (Photo Credits: Dan Daz; JerryLimLee)============Penafrancia Parade 2008=============
