PostHeaderIcon A story of hope from a Bilibid prison inmate

by Josephine R. Bundoc, M.D.

Christopher Solis is a 21 year-old spinal cord injury patient with paralysis from the hips and below. He regrets till this day the very one mistake in his life ---- succumbing to the restlessness of youth, he took the dare his friends made by staking a hold-up ---- landing him 2 gunshot wounds on the abdomen and thigh by a police officer.

Now on his 4th year as inmate at the National Bilibid Prison, because of excellent behavior and conduct, he is due for parole on June 2009, cutting his prison sentence by 3 years.

Life outside the prison though will be no different for him because he has been wheelchair bound, could not control his bowel movement and urination and has a pressure ulcer over his insensate buttocks. Worse, he could barely move his legs.

We admitted him at the UP-PGH ward and fabricated orthopedic prosthesis for both of his lower extremities that would render his hips, knees and feet stable for balance yet allow enough mobility to walk. After 2 weeks of training ---- he could stand and walk with crutches --- a big help indeed because his pressure ulcer started to heal as he is off his butt more; his bowel movement has improved because he is more mobile --- and it has greatly facilitated his voiding because he can now go to the toilet to void and have some privacy.

Best of all --- he is out of depression and is now looking forward to his parole and going back to school. To start saving money for his future schooling, he rediscovered his talent for painting--- a very good one at that!

"Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul.
And sings the tune
Without the words,
and never stops at all."

Emily Dickinson (1830 - 1886)

PostHeaderIcon The march of the pig virus

Across the borders of Mexico the fast-moving virus has proven its efficiency of causing alarm across the globe. The World Health Organization (WHO) raised its level of vigilance to level 4 indicating that the disease is highly transmissible among human beings.

The United States declared a public health emergency to coordinate the Department of Homeland Security’s response to the changing health threat. Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan said they would isolate travelers showing symptoms of the virus. Europe urged people to forgo non-essential travel especially in the disease epicenter.

CDC recommendations on Prevention

1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
2. Avoid close contact with sick people.
3. Avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

With the uncertainty of where the march of the disease will go, countries like the Philippines banned the import of pork from Mexico and the United States. Asian countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines started active screening of with flu-like symptoms travelers in their respective airports.

To date, there are at least 6 countries with the pig flu infection----Mexico, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and Israel. It is likely more places will confirm swine infections. There are about 2,000 downed by the illness with about 150 deaths. From extrapolations from past pandemics, in a worst case scenario, a large-scale illness can overwhelm care-givers and hospitals and cause the death of 2% of those affected, perhaps 2 million in USA alone.

The spread of the flu had negatively affected business and the economy. The world market fell yesterday amid threats of a pandemic and instability of the financial markets. Mexico had so far the most number of flu victims and it suffered the aftermaths of a faltering economy, drug wars, and a recent earthquake. Its major dollar earner, the tourism industry, slowed for lack of visitors.

There are those who ask why the US-Mexican border has not been closed---the disease adding to the problem of illegal aliens in the United States taxing the healthcare system. The active surveillance of suspected carriers seen in Asia is absent in America. The Obama government has no plan to halt school, ban large gatherings in public places considered mixbowls of infection.

Top level positions in the CDC and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) still need people to decide on encompassing health decisions especially if the situation deteriorates. With the illness out of the box people criticized Mexico for not doing enough in controlling the disease at the onset. PostHeaderIcon American serviceman’s acquittal could discourage future lawsuits against rape by foreigners

“Tearfully, bewildered, alone and confused, in a strange place, dumped in a curb literally with her pants down, she remembered her mother and what she would say. She remembered too, her boyfriend Brian. She had to hit back in the only way she could – to salvage, at least, a vestige of her self-esteem." ---Court of Appeals on Nicole. Malaya (04/24/09, De Vera, E)

After a protracted trial of US Marine Lance Corporal Daniel Smith who was accused and found guilty of rape, the Court of Appeals (CA) on review of the case, reversed the decision. He was earlier sentenced to 40 years in prison while criminal charges on his companions namely, Smith, Staff Sgt. Chad Carpentier, and Lance Corporals Keith Silkwood and Dominic Duplantis were dropped.

Accused by a 23 year-old Filipina named Nicole, Smith who was part of US troop contingent participating in a military exercise, was acquitted after “a careful and judicious perusal of evidence” did not convince Associate Justice Monina Arevalo-Zenarosa of his guilt. After his acquittal on Friday, April 24, 2009, the American serviceman was released from detention and immediately left the country.

Nicole who is now in the United States received P100,000 from the accused as compensatory damage ruled by the Regional Trial Court of Makati City. On March 12, 2009, she recanted and signed an affidavit expressing doubts on the accuracy of her testimony that Smith raped her. She said she was too drunk to ever know.

The case drew street rallies in Manila which find the overturned rape conviction degrading to Filipinos. Angry protesters slammed the RP-US Visiting Forces Agreement which they believe is lopsided in favor of the Americans. They suspected Nicole have been pressured to recant her accusations to the detriment of other women who might be placed in a similar situation.

Sen. Francis Escudero aired his dissatisfaction over the CA decision saying, ““It’s really saddening to see that Filipinos, who have been victims of discrimination overseas, are even placed at a disadvantage against foreigners in their own country.”

“Before fingers are pointed at Nicole again for doing a disservice to her own defense by virtue of her retraction and the choice for a normal life, we stand firm to our view that Daniel Smith’s acquittal is nothing but a consummated process of betrayal perpetrated by both the US and the Philippine governments,”----Partido ng Mangagawa spokesman Judy Ann Miranda Philstar.com (04/265/09, Calica, A)

Blistering reactions came from Sens. Loren Legarda, Pia Cayetano, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez and Zamboanga Rep. Maria Isabel Climaco-Salazar.

Organizations like the Partido ng Manggagawa (PM,) Association of Major Religious Superiors of the Philippines (AMRSP,) Bikolano Alliance for Nationalism against Balikatan (BAN BALIKATAN,) Gabriela and EnGendeRights joined the government leaders in assailing CA’s decision of setting Smith off the hook.

It looked like a “happy” ending for Nicole and Daniel. But the case stirred fresh opposition to the American military presence in the Philippines and opened new accusations of RP’s subservience to the United States as reflected in RP-US Visiting Forces Agreement. After the his conviction (pending result of the appeal,) Smith was handled by the US embassy and not by the Philippine prison.

Street protests were held condemning the CA decision; irate Filipinos felt they got the bitter part of an insulting deciison. Doubts lingered whether justice was served. The suspicion of “behind the scene” maneuvers that absolved the US marine of culpability remained. During the alleged rape it was clear Nicole was too drunk to have the mental faculties to decide for a “consensual” sex.

It's outrageous how the justice system of the country is manipulated to suit an ending that is expedient, but detrimental to the credibility of the courts. The handling of Smith's case can thwart future prosecution of foreigners who commit crime in the country.(Photo Credit: AP/ Pat Roque x 3) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Mexico’s new swine-avian-human flu worries health experts of global pandemic

Mexico closed down schools, museums and movie houses on Friday, April 24, 2009 as nearly a thousand suspected cases of influenza were reported to sicken people and at least 61 died. The disease which may be transmitted from animals (zoonotic infection) has worried Mexican authorities for its killing power and its adverse effects on tourism, a major source of revenue for the country struck by economic downturn, drug wars, and narcotics trade.

“Mexico's Health Secretary, Jose Cordova, said only 16 of the deaths have been confirmed to have been caused by the new strain, through testing at government laboratories. Samples from 44 other people who died were still being tested. The health department put the total number of people sickened by the virus at around 943 nationwide.” ----AP/ Philstar (04/24/09)

To contain the spread of the disease, the Mexican government urged the public to shun large crowds and avoid close contacts with people. Those with fever, cough, a sore throat, muscle and joint pains are advised to see a doctor and stay at home. The people responded with certain fear and confusion.

“Most of Mexico’s dead were young, healthy adults, and none were over 60 or under 3 years old, the World Health Organization said. That alarms health officials because seasonal flus cause most of their deaths among infants and bedridden elderly people, but pandemic flus — like the 1918 Spanish flu, and the 1957 and 1968 pandemics — often strike young, healthy people the hardest.”--- New York Times (04/24/09, Lacey, M.; McNeil, D. Jr.)

Eight (8) non-fatal flu similar to those caused by this new Mexican strain were diagnosed in the southwest United States prompting health authorities to sound an alarm. It is unknown how many more will go down with the disease.

According to Center for Disease Control (CDC,) which monitors the disease, the new strain of flu contains a combination of gene sequences of pig, bird, and human influenza.

“Given how quickly flu can spread around the globe, if these are the first signs of a pandemic, then there are probably cases incubating around the world already, said Dr. Michael Osterholm at the University of Minnesota.”
----Newsnet5.com / AP (04/42/09, Stevenson, M)

It is said the flu seems responsive to the two drugs available: Tamiflu and Relenza. The medicines need to be taken early during the illness to get the best benefit.

Health authorities scramble to control the disease which has the potential to spread as a pandemic. It isn't known if the vaccination given last fall and winter confers protection from this new viral strain which is transmissible from person to person. Neither is it understood how the genetic mixture of the virus came to be. Frequent hand washing and covering one’s mouth during a sneeze or cough are among the common precautions to prevent the spread of the disease. (Photo Credit: Opiado)

PostHeaderIcon Noodles for "brighter minds" in DepEd’s nutrition program draws sharp criticism

The Council of Health and Development (CHD) through its director, Dr. Eleanor A. Jara decried the “deceitful and scandalous” distribution of poorly nutritious noodles by the Department of Education (DepEd) in its “Food for the School” program.

According to Dr. Jara, a total of 19,418,880 packs of overpriced salty instant noodles were allotted to 19 million public school children in the Philippines, but the food is hardly nutritious. P400 million pesos have been allotted to the feeding program that hopes to give “brighter minds” to many malnourished students.

Nutritional Value of a typical Noodle Pack:

Serving size: 1.5 oz. (42 grams/1/2dry noodle block and 1 tsp. of seasoning)
Calories: 190
Total Fat: 7 grams
Sodium: 910 mg
Carbohydrates: 26 grams
Protein: 5 grams

CHD, a national consortium of more than 50 community-based health organizations, advises that instead of masking the nutrition problem of Filipinos, the government must look into the causes and solutions of poverty in the country. (Photo Credit: Claudebarutel) =0=

PostHeaderIcon 82,000 flee war zone between the Tamil separatists and Sri Lankan military forces

Of the hundred thousand civilians trapped in the last stronghold of Tamil rebels who fight the Sri Lankan government forces, an estimated 82,000 had escaped the area as fighting intensified in the 20 square kilometer stronghold where 43 Tamil fighters were killed in the last few days.

The Sri Lankan military also suffered casualties, but their numbers were not exactly known. According to Brig. Udaya Namakkara, the military spokesman, the cornered Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) insurgents were close to giving up their protracted fighting of 25 years. The government had demanded a final surrender from the Tamil tiger rebels holed in a tiny territory in the northeast part of the island nation.

The Tamil people of the island of Ceylon (now called Sri Lanka) constitute a distinct nation. They form a social entity, with their own history, traditions, culture, language and traditional homeland. The Tamil people call their nation 'Tamil Eelam'. Founded in 1976, the LTTE is the most powerful Tamil group in Sri Lanka and uses overt and illegal methods to raise funds, acquire weapons, and publicize its cause of establishing an independent Tamil state.

The LTTE began its armed conflict with the Sri Lankan Government in 1983 and relies on a guerrilla strategy that includes the use of terrorist tactics. The group's elite Black Tiger squad conducts suicide bombings against important targets, and all rank-and-file members carry a cyanide capsule to kill themselves rather than allow themselves to be caught. The LTTE is very insular and highly organized with its own intelligence service, naval element (the Sea Tigers), and women's political and military wings
.”---http;//www.globalsecurity.org/

The Tamils had been waging a bloody genocidal war to gain independence from government which had been under control of ethnic Sinhalese. A total of 70,000 people have died as a result of the conflict.

“The increasing cost of the war comes as Sri Lanka is seeking a $1.9bn (€1.5bn, £1.3bn) loan from the International Monetary Fund to boost its foreign exchange reserves and shore up rapidly depreciating currency. The island’s economy has been hit by falling exports and remittance income from its large number of overseas workers.” ----FT. com Financial Times Asia Pacific (04/21/09, Leahy, J)

In the last few months, the United Nations, Red Cross, and other aid groups, warned of humanitarian catastrophe as people had been held against their will and used as human shields, bringing a death toll of about 4,500 civilians since the start of the year.

From humanitarian groups, suggestions to have a ceasefire so that civilians can leave the site of violence are unheeded. Independent reporters aren’t permitted access to cover the war zone. Analysts believe that even if the LTTE lose their stronghold, the rebel group is hard to defeat and eradicate completely. PostHeaderIcon Miss USA finalist graciously defends her anti-gay marriage position

Expressing the sentiment of majority of Californians and Americans, Miss California Carrie Prejean who placed second in the recently concluded Miss USA pageant, reiterated her bible-based belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.

She made it clear she won't choose the dictates of political correctness and compromise her belief just to win a beauty contest.

The scintillating and outstandingly pretty beauty contestant clearly explained her position gaining her more respect and adulation from TV audiences who watched her clarify the controversy. She said she had no regrets having to express her long-held belief because she thought that was the right thing to do. =0=

PostHeaderIcon EU will closely watch how RP uses foreign aid

Most likely because of the unchecked corruption of countries like the Philippines that the European Union (EU) decided to closely watch how aid money is used by recipient countries. Those who would be uncooperative run the risk of losing their financial aid.

“It is necessary to have clarity on what the government will do with the funds. We are now in the process of restructuring our aid. We want to make it visible and transparent and see for what purpose was it used.”----said Koos Richelle, European Commission’s Director General of the EuropeAid Cooperation Office. Daily Tribune (04/22/09, Del Callar MP)

The European Union including other big donors for development like the US, Australia, and Japan are concerned and want to know if their help to poor countries like the Philippines benefit the intended recipients. They are demanding for tangible results.

The administration of Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo is looked upon by the Filipinos as the most corrupt. Early this year, World Bank (WB) disclosed the bid-rigging which occurs in its road projects. The revelation has blacklisted three Filipino and four Chinese companies involved in the anomaly which implicated Jose Miguel Arroyo, the husband of the president. (Photo Credit: Mikey G Ottawa)

PostHeaderIcon Miss California lost because of a politically (in)correct answer in the Miss USA 2009 Pageant?

When Miss California Carrie Prejean was asked about her thoughts on same-sex marriage, she quickly shared her opinion which many believed was excellent--- an answer that came direct from her heart and mind.

“We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."

But according to reports, her answer to the question and answer portion of the contest angered an openly gay pageant judge because it wasn’t politically correct---it didn’t conform to the progressive liberal political agenda that he wants others to espouse. Her conservative innocuous comment against same-sex unions probably caused Ms. Prejean to lose the Miss USA title to another gorgeous lady, Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton.

Many questioned why the politically charged question was ever asked at all. Or why it should matter when in America, everyone is entitled to each one’s opinion. Others believe that if a person goes for traditional marriage---that which is contracted between a man and woman--- one is a bigot, a racist, and homophobe. Gay marital unions entail a redefinition of marriage and run contradictory to religious beliefs.

Miss California got praise and respect for her honest answer. Some snide remarks against the first runner-up are mostly undeserved. The controversial question intended to advance political agenda must have no place in a beauty pageant. The assault on traditional values which serve as the foundation of families and strength of society make people wonder where the American culture is heading. (Photo Credit: AP/ Eric Jamison x 2) =0=

PostHeaderIcon 9 hostages are still captives of Abu Sayyaf bandits Mindanao

Philippine government forces intensified their search for Italian Eugenio Vagni, the remaining International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) humanitarian worker who is still under the clutches of Al-Qaeda-affiliated Abu Sayyaf kidnappers holed in the jungles of Jolo, Sulu, From the jungles of Mindanao, Vagni’s two companions Filipina Mary Jean Lacaba and Swiss Andreas Notter had been released from captivity in January 15, 2009.

Aside for Vagni, however there are other Mindanao hostages who escape the attention of the media, government and the Filipino people. In Basilan, there are nine kidnapped victims of the Islamic terrorists who need to be rescued. All of them are Filipinos except one who is a Sri Lankan citizen:

Hostages:

1. Umar Jaleel, Sri Lankan volunteer, Nonviolent Peaceforce, abducted February 13,
2009, Lamitan, Basilan
2. Rafael Mayonato, teacher, abducted January 23, 2009 in Landang Gua,
Zamboanga
3. Quizon Freires. teacher, abducted January 23, 2009 in Landang Gua,
Zambuanga
4. Janette de los Reyes, abducted January 23, 2009 in Landang Gua,
Zamboanga
5. Diokhing Que, store owner, abducted February 2, 2009, Jolo, Sulu.
6. Jocelyn Enriquez, teacher, abducted March 13, 2009, Naga, Zamboanga
Sibugay
7. Jocelyn Inion, teacher, abducted March 13, 2009, Naga, Zambuaonga
Sibugay
8. Noemi Mande, teacher, abducted March 13, 2009, Naga, Zamboanga,
Sibugay
9. Lea Patriz, NGO worker, Kinaiyahan Foundation, Lamitan, Basilan

All the above kidnapped victims are believed to be holed in Basilan by Abu Sayyaf bandits who demand ransom for their release. Earlier, ex-hostage Octavio Dimampo, a teacher in Mindanao asked why less effort is given to the Basilan hostages compared to the ICRC kidnapped victims in Sulu. Dimampo is right to be concerned of the other innocent hostages who deserve their freedom from the Muslim thugs. They are as notorious as their barbaric beheadings and inhumane treatment of human beings. (Photo Credit: Charlie Saceda) =0=

PostHeaderIcon With more than 47.7 million viewers, what’s up for new singing star Susan Boyle?

Most of those who saw Susan Boyle sang Les Miserables’ “I dreamed a dream” were mesmerized, They probably gave her a more rousing standing ovation than Lea Salonga when she sang the same song in the Great White Way. The judges in the Britain's Got Talent were unanimously enthralled by her unexpected stunning performance.

Susan Boyle, the 47 year old aspiring British talent caused a world-wide stir for that singing. She displayed pure talent, rocking her watchers on their seats and earning her 47.7 million viewers as of Friday, April 17, 2009.

Almost everybody instantly loved the matronly Ms. Boyle who dreamed of being as successful as Elaine Paige, the popular singer and actress of musical theatre. Perhaps it was because she epitomized the regular lady in the block with little chance of being noticed in the competitive arena of entertainment.

In a discriminating world, she brought down the artificiality of the glittery musical world where performers are supposed to be young, of perfect voice, pretty face, and desirable figure. For a change, people liked to watch and hear plain Susan.

Yet, B. Saunders in her comment titled “How long will Susan Boyle’s dream last” which appeared in Sunday Star Times (sstlive.co.nz) argues that in order to have a great musical career, a fantastic voice like Susan’s isn’t enough and a certain glamour is needed. Saunders vented her pessimism further saying:

“Poor Susan's private life isn't ideal either. As a child she was bullied because oxygen deprivation at birth had affected her ability to learn. At 47, she is unemployed, has never been kissed, and was recently suffering from depression after her mother died. This is tragedy aplenty but it is not the sort of tragedy that anyone much wants to identify with. That wouldn't matter if Susan was super sexy - in fact it would be great because it would fulfill the tragi-glam requirements.

Susan does not have any sort of glamour factor at all though. What she does have is a huge amount of talent and an even bigger dollop of novelty value
.”

It is too early to predict what is in store for Ms. Boyle. Actress Demi Moore is said to have shed tears seeing her sing. Oprah Winfrey has invited the new darling of song to appear in her show before the talent contest winner is known. An admiring fan has a website site set up for the newest UK singing sensation at: susan-boyle.com

According to Chris Matyszczyk (http://news.cnet.com), Visible Measures, a company which tracts online audiences said there are than 200 video clips of Susan Boyle’s contest performance including those which can be viewed in You Tube. She seemed to have garnered more attention than the Iraqi shoe thrower, Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, and President Barack Obama, during his presidential victory address. I Dreamed a Dream
(from the Broadway Musicale "Les Miserables")

There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
And they turn your dream to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

PostHeaderIcon More than 100 Filipino seamen still on the hands of Somali pirates

Of more than 300 hostages pirates keep in captivity off the coast of Somalia, about a third of them are Filipino seamen. On Friday, April 17, 2009, 17 Filipinos have been released leaving about 105 still to be freed.

According to Philippine Foreign Affairs official Esteban Cornejos, a total of 227 Filipino seamen have been abducted in the sea off the Gulf of Aden in 2006 and they were released without government intervention. The country is a leading supplier of seafarers worlwide, numbering about 350,000 who serve as crews of oil carriers, luxury vessels, and passengers ships.

This time more than a hundred Filipino seamen are yet to be released from the clutches of Somali marauders. Malacanang Palace have decided to ban the deployment of Filipino mariners on ships that pass within 200 nautical miles or 300 kilometers from Somali coast.

In spite of the UN Security Councils adoption of Resolution 1838 since October last year calling on nations with boats in the area to use military force to halt piracy at sea, the kidnapping activities of Somali pirates for ransom continue. “Pirates have attacked more than 80 boats this year alone, four times the number assaulted in 2003, according to the Kuala Lumpur-based International Maritime Bureau. They now hold at least 18 ships — including a Belgian tanker seized Saturday with 10 crew aboard ”----AP/MSNBC (04/18/09)

PostHeaderIcon RP’s Bataan nuclear power plant sold for a measly $2,859 million

One of the most stupid deals that the disgraced Marcos regime left the Filipinos was the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP)--- a white elephant which was never used because of safety concerns. Studies on the facility disclosed numerous safety-defects which made it too costly to revive after more than 3 decades of non-operation.

Built in 1976 and finished in 1984 in response to the oil crisis three decades ago, the overpriced behemoth energy facility that could have supplied the country of needed electricity was offered for sale in 2005. Only now did the nuclear plant have its buyer.

The sale surely brought back bitter recall of a useless facility in Morong, Bataan which never generated electricity, but caused Filipino taxpayers $155,000 per day for more than 30 years. It was built by the Marcos at cost of $.2.3 billion on a borrowed funding of $1.06 billion, the country’s greatest single debt obligation,

“When Marcos was overthrown by the so-called People Power Revolution in early 1986 a team of international inspectors visited the site and declared it unsafe and inoperable as it was built near major earthquake fault lines and near the Pinatubo volcano which at the time was dormant.”----Energy Bulletin (06/03/04, Wilson, K)

As scrap, Philippine government sold BNPP to a local company, the Ruberon Inc., for a give-away sum of $2,859 million (0.124% of its construction cost) ----the measly tag (doesn't include the land) for the plant’s building structures, plant equipment, and accessories apt to be recycled and sold for a profit. Ruberon’s officer on legal affairs Feliciano Clemencio had this to say of BNPP:

“Because the asset had been decommissioned, the company would dismantle the facilities, retrieve some usable materials, and then recycle it to be sold to local and foreign buyers. The trading of metals is better than opening new mining sites. This is one alternative: recycling some of the metals and melting them
” ---Manila Standard (04/18-19/99, Flores, AM)

Considered an environmental hazard, the failed nuclear plant located 60 miles north of Manila is one among the best examples of mismanagement during the time of Marcos whose aftermath is still being felt by Filipinos today. The principal players in the deal were never made to account for their irresponsibility.

“The failure of the Philippines in its attempt to use nuclear energy can be traced to corruption. The nuclear plant, if designed and constructed properly, could have been used to avert a power blackout in the 1980s. The power crisis not only plunged the whole country into darkness, it crippled the local economy, especially the manufacturing sector.” ---Yehey (07/03/09, Palatino, M)

Under Pres. Cory Aquino’s watch, the BNPP’s operation was banned and written in the constitution. Subsequent administrations were unsuccessful in finding ways to make outdated BNPP useful. The debt burden of the mothballed nuclear plant had caused tremendous financial pain for the country long before the current economic crisis came. (Photo Credit: IAEA.org/ Rotaru, I) =0=

PostHeaderIcon In Memoriam: Aida B. Abella-Felipe, 84

For a time, she was one of Naga City’s most admired citizens. In the tradtion of devoted domesticity and homely calm, Aida B. Abella-Felipe lived the full life of a loving mother to children Cecile, Annabel, Amelia, Marlene, Emeterio, Ramon IV, Antero and Jesus. In peace, she died on April 4, 2009 at the age of 84 to be with the Lord.

Married for 66 years to the respected Naga ex-mayor Ramon H. Felipe, Jr., the faithful and resolute lady won’t be forgotten as the convent-bred granddaughter of Manuel P. Abella, one of the 15 Bicol Martyrs. She was a woman whose passing makes her family and those who know her feel the big loss.

In Colegio de Sta. Isabel (Naga) where the genteel and polished women of her days got their Catholic Christian upbringing, Mrs. Felipe got her character formation---just right for her to become the admirable matriarch of the Abella-Felipe clan. Helped by the Daughters of Charity sisters, she got further learning in Manila's Assumption College at a time when not so many women in her community devoted themselves to higher education.

In the backdrop of World War II, she married the guy who was to be one of the nation's top-notch lawyers and public servant. At peacetime, she patiently nurtured their 8 children, 7 children-in-law, 19 grandchildren, 6 grandchildren-in-law, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson, for a total of 52 descendants.---Bicol Mail (04/16/09, Escandor, Juan Jr)

PostHeaderIcon ICRC hostage crisis: Abu Sayyaf’s Swiss captive freed

A sketchy report from Jolo, Sulu disclosed that International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) worker, Andreas Notter, a Swiss national had been freed by Abu Sayyaf bandits who held him captive in Mindanao, Philippines since January 15, 2009.

Along with Filipina Mary Jean Lacaba, Notter is the second of three ICRC hostages to be freed. Abandoned by his captors in Indanan town, the humanitarian worker arrived at the house of Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan on Friday, April 17, 2009, according to Col. Edgard Arevalo, the spokesman of Task Force ICRC.

The details of the release are not yet known. This happy development leaves only Eugenio Vagni, an Italian citizen as the only hostage being held by the dreaded extremists who are linked with the terrorist Al-Qaeda group. It is uncertain whether the $5 million ransom demanded by the kidnappers headed by Albader Parad had been paid. (Photo Credits: Inquirer: AFP/ ICRC) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Good Friday remembrance by the Eastern Orthodox Church

Using a different calendar to commemorate the passion and death of Jesus Christ, the Eastern Orthodox Church marks Good Friday on April 17, 2009, a week later than the Roman Catholics and Protestants.

Many pilgrims visit Jerusalem today to mark the somber day Jesus Christ was crucified. Black-robed Greek priests carried wooden crosses at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the site believed to be where Jesus was buried after His agonizing crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. The day is marked with prayers, mourning, fasting, and penance. (Photo Credit: AP/ Bernat Armangue) =0=

PostHeaderIcon White House had the symbol of Jesus covered during Obama’s talk in Georgetown

As a sign of growing alienation of the Obama administration from mainstream Christian faith, the White House Staff requested Georgetown University, a well-known American Jesuit educational institution to cover “IHS,” a symbol of Jesus Christ in the Gaston Hall stage where the president spoke on Tuesday, April 14, 2009. The Jesus monogram was concealed by a black-painted triangular plywood during his speech.

“In coordinating the logistical arrangements for yesterday’s event, Georgetown honored the White House staff’s request to cover all of the Georgetown University signage and symbols behind Gaston Hall stage,” Julie Green Bataille, associate vice president for communications at Georgetown---CNSNews.com (04/15/09, Mora, E)

Many Catholics were disgusted by the covering of the religious symbol on stage. Among them, Gary Bauer, chairman of American Values and a Georgetown Law School alumnus was quick to say:

Whatever the motivation of the White House was," he said, "the officials at Georgetown certainly should have said, ‘If you want to come here to speak, the evidence of our faith will remain visible. ”---- CitizenLink.com (04/16/09, Greer, R.)

The removal of the faith-based monogram of Jesus is consistent to the White House radical liberal stance against Christian religion. Earlier, the Holy See rejected Barack Obama’s ambassador endorsement of Caroline Kennedy who is a staunch advocate of abortion just like the president. The Catholic Church forbids the destruction of unborn babies and considers the killing of the defenseless intrinsically evil.

In Notre Dame University, another American Catholic University, the controversy of whether to let Obama speak in a graduation ceremony next month and receive an honorary degree has galvanized strong opposition in and out of campus. Catholics nationwide express outrage against the president who is out to implement abortion and stem cell research in his administration. The chief executive has recently lifted the ban for embryonic stem cell research and offered federal funding for its scientific investigation. He has extended tax-payer money in support to international groups which practice abortion as a way to control population. PostHeaderIcon Mystery behind the death of Ted Failon’s wife

It must be a challenge for investigators to know the truth behind the death of 45-year old Trinidad Arteche Etong, the wife of Ted Failon, a news anchor of ABS-CBN TV Patrol. It has been suggested that the woman died in her home’s bathroom from an alleged self-inflicted gunshot head wound--- presumably a case of suicide. The broadcaster was said to be in the TV studio when the incident occurred.

“Failon’s wife Trinidad Arteche Etong, 45, was declared dead by doctors of the New Era General Hospital at 8:50 last night. She had been in a coma and declared brain-dead after she sustained a bullet wound in her left temple after the shooting incident at 10:30 a.m. inside their house on 27 General Aquino street, Tierra Pura Subdivision in Tandang Sora, Quezon City.”--- Philstar (04/17/09, Padua, R)

It was reported that Etong and her husband had failed financial investments. Failon admitted having quarreled with her on money matters the night before.

It will take some time to reconcile the accounts of witnesses and forensic evidence, but early on, possibilities other than suicide are being considered by investigators.

There was a race to remove spattered blood in the bathroom where Trinidad was found before investigators could come to examine. In an act to tamper evidence, house helpers also cleaned the vehicle used to bring the bloodied lady to the hospital. Evaluation of the bullet trajectory posed questions as to whether the head wound was indeed self-inflicted.

Failon reportedly touched the gun thought to be used in the shooting. At one point, his family refused to allow investigators to see the scene of the incident. Though presumed innocent, the well-known broadcaster had been under close scrutiny.

Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) chief Persida Rueda-Acosta who temporarily acted as Failon’s lawyer said there was no direct evidence linking the TV anchor to the fatal shooting. However, Justice Secretary Gonzalez tasked the Bureau of Immigration to put Failon under its watch list in order to prevent him from leaving the country.

Shortly after Trinidad passed away in the hospital, obstruction of justice charges were filed versus Failon and his sister-in-law Pamela Arteche, and house helpers Pacifico Apacible, Carlota Morbos, Wilfreda Bolliser, and Glen Palan at the Quezon City prosecutor’s office. The bases of the accusation were Failon's failure to report the incident to the police and tampering of evidence by house helpers.

The way the shooting incident was handled by the Failon family suggested either gross ignorance in reporting a potential crime scene or an attempt at cover-up for reasons yet to be known. Initial investigation suggested less of the former and more of the latter.

It is less likely that those accused of obstruction of justice don't know the basics of handling this bloody incident. On the other hand, it's the duty of the police and investigators to come up with a truthful and credible account of what happened so that the case can rest with fair closure. PostHeaderIcon “Tea Party” as a venue for anti-Obama protests on tax day

The parting words on page 195 of James Delingpole, the British political commentator, in his book, “Welcome to Obamaland--- I have seen your future and it doesn’t work” seem to sum up the ire and dread of the tens of thousands who attended the “Tea Party” today, April 15, 2009:

“Well, we’re nearly done and I know just how you’re feeling. Terrible. The land you love has been hijacked by a bunch of left-liberal fruitcakes. They don’t have much of an idea how to fix the economy. But they do know exactly how to ruin your life. And they will.”

As US citizens rush for the last day of filing of the 2008 income tax, a sizeable number of Americans across many cities held their “tea parties” to vent their anger and opposition to the tax increases and the astronomical spending of the Obama administration. A big crowd gathered right in Washington, DC close to the White House.

Barely a hundred days in office, Pres. Barack Obama confronts this opposition of Republicans and conservatives who may serve as the nucleus of a grassroots fight against massive bail-outs, heavy taxation, and spending which put taxpayers’ money on line and endanger the finances of children of the next generation.

Supported by conservative news media and radio talk shows, people gathered to vent their criticisms, doubts, and frustration on the direction the United States is going. They expressed anger over what’s going on in the government which was once thought to be too big to fail.

From New York to Washington, Miami to Boston, Sacramento, CA to Chicago, Nashiville to Denver and other cities, the tea parties materialized, taking inspiration from TV commentator Rick Santelli. The guy suggested a "tea party" to protest government bailouts which leave distrust and uncertainty over the heads of Americans.

Yet, the anti-Obama opposition is given little attention by liberal media people. That's partly because like the slobbering Obama fans, majority of Americans truly believe the president will come out triumphant with his prosperity plan through greater government control and massive spending.

“Gallup polls released this week found that 53% of Americans approve of the expansion of the U.S. government to help fix the economy, even if most of that group wants it scaled back once the crisis abates. And 48% think that the amount of federal income taxes they pay is "about right," a finding that shows anti-tax sentiment near a historic low for the last five decades.”---Los Angeles Times (04/15/09, Finnegan, M; Hook, J)

The Democrats and their liberal supporters who dominate the legislature are quick to be disparaging. They dismiss the leaders of tea parties as rabble-rousers wanting of significant public support. They can’t see (or pretend not to) the tea parties as upswells of opposition waiting for Obama to falter.

The president’s popularity is high at this time. He appears to be well in control to sway the support of the people. However, as the economy crisis drags on and public confidence persists to be low, he got only a small window period to prove that he can deliver what he promised. PostHeaderIcon Burger King withdraws ad which Mexicans find racially offensive

Barely a month of bashing by the Hongkong magazine columnist Chip Tsao who insulted Filipinos as a "nation of servants," the giant fast food chain Burger King has to apologize for its new hamburger ad released in Europe.

It featured a tall lanky red-shirted American cowboy and a pudgy guy of diminutive stature wearing the Mexican flag in an advertisement. The commercial comes as a poster with a corresponding TV clip which has stirred the ire of Mexicans who threaten to take legal action.

Mexico’s ambassador to Spain Jorge Zermeño took offense on the poster which he said showed an erroneous and demeaning stereotype of Mexicans. The controversial ad introduced the hamburger “Texican whooper” using the Mexican flag inappropriately.

In a response to the complaint, Burger King wrote a letter to the ambassador saying the food company didn’t mean any harm to the Mexicans, but nonetheless, the food company apologized. Burger King promised to remove the derogatory commercial.

The move to get over the issue quickly by issuing an apology and withdrawing the commercial must be the most logical thing to do. There have been some instances of demeaning portrayals of a group of people which show racist tendencies in others. Putting Burger King on notice about the laws against desecration of the national symbols such as the Mexican flag sends a message of the need for respect.(Photo Credit; NY Daily News; ER M@rshall) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Immigrant Filipinos among victims in Italy’s earthquake

Many are wondering how the people in the medieval city of L Aquila and neighboring environs are coping with the strong earthquake that brought death to close to 300 people, damaged more than 10,000 buildings and rendered 58,000 people homeless. 33,000 emergency tents were set up to house those who were displaced.

"There is little industry here, the economy was based on the students from out of town, and they are not coming back for a long time," said Daniele Cerrone, who owned a pub in L'Aquila's ravaged historic center. "In the meantime what are we going to do? Buy clothes and go the pub between ourselves?"----AP/ Yahoo. News (04/15/09, David, A)

The suffering and uncertainty of the earthquake victims aren’t shared by the local Italians alone. Scores of immigrants from Peru, India, the Philippines and neighboring countries who set up their lives in their adopted land sought refuge in tent shelters after their homes were leveled on the ground. Filipino expatriates Julyn Macabenta and Shane Cipriano who lost their home were among the thousands who were displaced.

It will take years for the city ravaged by the earthquake to recover. With many aftershocks, the April 6 tremblor with an intensity of 6.3 has raised a rebuilding dilemma which is estimated to cost $12 billion euros ($16 billion dollars)---Bloomberg.com (04/14/09, Krause-Jackson, F.)(Photo Credit: AP/ Alessandra Tarantino)=0=

PostHeaderIcon Cristina Enrile quits Vatican post

Citing poor health, Cristina Enrile, wife of Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile resigned from her post as Philippine ambassador to the Vatican which she held for barely six months. The easily tired lady had been suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS,) a nebulous medical condition whose diagnosis is as challenging as its treatment.

Prior to Cristina's assumption as envoy, there were some criticisms on the aptness of her selection. Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales (Mount Balatucan Monitor) and Bishop Leonardo Medroso of Tagbilaran (tubagbohol.mikeligalig.com) expressed it could have been better if the Catholic clergy was consulted about her appointment.

According to Juan Ponce, his wife complained of muscle pains, difficulty of breathing, dizziness, and tiredness, prompting Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo to accept her resignation.

Many of CFS sufferers complain of perplexing signs and symptoms that require thorough medical evaluation. A sizeable fraction of CFS sufferers have psychological overlays. It is uncertain if this holds true with the resigned lady envoy.

Replacing Cristina is Ma. Mercedes “Mercy” Reinares Arrastia-Tuason, the wife of a cousin of Pres. Arroyo’s husband. Tuason, a pro-lifer, is said to work with charitable organizations including those that minister to the poor and the sick.

It had been reported that another Philippine leader, Sen. Miriam D. Santiago suffers from the same medical condition as Cristina's. (Photo Credit: DFA) =0=

Chronic Fatigue Synrdome (CFS)

"Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a hard diagnosis to make because there are no specific tests or laboratory markers to pinpoint the ailment; many illnesses have fatigue as among their prominent symptoms and a good fraction of patients looks well. The manifestations of CFS vary in severity and its course is characterized by periods of remissions and exacerbations
."---UP Ibalon Bicol Blog (02/07/09, mesiamd)

A CFS diagnosis should be considered in patients who present with six months or more of unexplained fatigue accompanied by other characteristic symptoms. These symptoms may include:

• cognitive dysfunction, including impaired memory or concentration
• malaise or exhaustion lasting > 24 hours after physical or mental exercise
• unrestful sleep
• joint pain without signs of inflammation
• persistent musculo-skeletal pain
• depression
• mood swings
• headaches
• tender cervical or axillary lymph nodes
• sore throat

PostHeaderIcon Caroline Kennedy’s support for abortion disqualifies her as US ambassador to the Vatican

After her failed bid to become the New York senator replacement of Hillary Clinton, Caroline Kennedy, 53, the only surviving child of the Pres. John F. Kennedy was considered unfit to serve as ambassador to the Holy See. According to Vatican sources, Kennedy’s staunch support abortion (just like the support of other Obama nominees) disqualifies her for the position.

Obama's endorsement of Caroline to the post had been perceived as a reward for the Kennedy's support to his presidential election. Many Catholics believe it is an insult to their faith to send in a woman who accepts the killing of unborn human beings.

The embarrassing rejection which the White House didn’t comment on, was upheld by Raymond Flynn, a former US ambassador to the Vatican, who said the well-connected Kennedy who espouses secular-liberal values contrary to Roman Catholic teaching wasn’t a good choice.

"It's imperative, it's essential that the person who represents us to the Holy See be a person who has pro-life values. I hope the President doesn't make that mistake," he told the Boston Herald. "She said she was pro-choice. I don't assume she's going to change that, which is problematic."----Telegraph.co. uk.(04/11/09, Spillius, A)

It’s just right that the Roman Catholic Church must assert what it teaches. A religion doesn’t have to bow down to the dictates of the secular society---especially if such dictates are contrary to its beliefs and traditions. Caroline's faulty nomination to the Holy See is just one among several in Obama administration who accepted positions with questionable qualifications. Photo Credit: photo240779) =0=

PostHeaderIcon After the Security Council’s condemnation, North Korea responds with its nuclear threats

North Korea (NK) was angered when the 15-member United Nations Security Council unanimously voted to condemn the failed launch of a long range missile early this month. Pyongyang insisted that the rocket was a satellite intended for peaceful purposes. Yet, it had been suspected that the missile was a test for long range ballistic technology.

The UN condemnation was based on a violation of a 2006 resolution that prohibited Pyongyang from all missile activities.

Accusing UN of interference, Kim Jong Il’s repressive regime quickly warned to restart its plutonium production, kick out UN inspectors, and walk away from the six-nation talks on disarmament.

Pointing to the failed rocket launch on April 5, 2009 which endangered territories such as Alaska and Hawaii, the United States was quick to advise NK to stop its provocations and abide with its commitments to the outside world.

"There is no need for six-party talks anymore," the North Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement.-----Los Angeles Times (04/15/09, Richter, P; Glionna, JM)

Russia expressed its regrets and Japan, together with China (the host of the six party meeting) advised that countries---the United States, South Korea, North Korea, Japan, Russia, and China must go back to the discussion table.

"We hope the relevant parties could proceed from the perspective of the overall interest of the region, so as to work together to safeguard the progress of the six-party talks," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a news briefing. ---- Washington Post (04/14/09, Branigin, W.; Kim S.)

Analysts believe Pyongyang’s new tantrums are the same tactics of precipitating a crisis in order to get what it wants from the world. Its rhetorical threats in the past have served the communist country well---with food aid, fuel and economic assistance as rewards of good behavior.

“North Korea outraged the world three years ago by exploding a small nuclear device. But less than a year later, as it turned brinkmanship into remuneration, it pledged to abandon its nuclear weapons in return for aid from the United States and other countries. “ ----Washington Post (04/14/09, Branigin, W.; Kim S.)

The effects of UN sanctions on NK aren’t as effective as desired. The destitute communist nation with an ailing supreme leader is able to exploit leverage, gain concessions by bold demands and vitriolic threats of an all out war with its neighbors. NK along with Iran continues to be a menace to the stability and peace of the world. (Photo Credits: Christianragen; Stephan x 2) =0=
