US homes and businesses, another scandal for the Arroyos?
In the fading days of Pres. Gloria Arroyo’s term as president, another allegation of ill-gotten wealth is brewing for her family. Her son, Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo, was reported to have failed declaring a P63.7 million property fronting San Francisco Bay in California. It was alleged this foreign property located at 1655 Beach Park Blvd, Foster City was named under his wife’s name in 2006.
“By omitting the US property starting in 2007, Mikey’s real property assets plunged from P90.7 million in 2006 to P27 million in 2007 and 2008.
All the business interests Mikey declared in his latest SALN were acquired when he was already congressman: president of Mikey’s Horseman Bar and Grill, 2006; director of LPG Auto Gas and shareholder in Los Manos Verdes Inc., 2007; and shareholder in U18 Properties Inc. and stockholder of the La Vista Investments and Holdings Inc. in 2008.”---Malaya (08/31/09, Files, V.)
Similarly, Dato, Gloria’s other son also bought a house worth P26.7 million in the golden state after he won as congressman in 2007. But this, he declared in his tax declarations.
These allegations are on top of local businesses that the Arroyos are reportedly engaged in. As usual, the first family has to answer with a denial. But won't they give their proof? The Filipino people need to know if there is any wrong-doing in these property purchases. With another investigation it will take time to know if all these accusations are true. Suicide bomber kills 16 military recruits in Swat Valley
A suicide bomber who trespassed a training compound for military recruits blew himself, killing 16 would-be police officers in Swat region of Pakistan. The bloody attack which wounded an undetermined number of trainees came three days after 27 security men died in another attack in the country’s Khyber region.
The violence in unstable Mingora, Swat’s major village may be an attempt of Taliban militants to reclaim the area they control after their stronghold of three years was disrupted by military forces early in May 2009.
It was estimated 1,800 Islamic rebels and suicide bombers died during the offensive. A million civilians escaped the area, but returned when some measure of stability was achieved by the anti-Taliban forces.

More Filipino maids suffer during Ramadan
Filipino maids in the Middle East suffer more during the fasting month of Ramadan when some of them are required to work long hours, lasting way beyond 8 hours per day. A number of these women are forcibly asked to observe fasting in domestic households against their will.
John L. Monterona, Migrante-Middle East regional coordinator who works for the welfare of OFW;s, said the number of maids who runaway from their employers rise from 5 before Ramadan to about 6 to 8 per month----a result of intolerable work conditions which tend to worsen during the Muslim fasting season.
“Just last night, I received several short messages from OFW Marie (not her real name) asking for help as she couldn’t anymore endure staying with her employer. She complains that she works 18 to 20 hours a day, with only a single meal and not enough sleep,” Monterona said.---- Inquirer (08/30/09, Uy, V.)
In 2006, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) lists about 90,000 Filipino maids working abroad, mostly in the Middle East. There is a lot that the Philippine government and the host country have to do to improve the labor condition of house-helps working outside the country.
Exploitation of maids in abroad is still a problem in spite of international covenants by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the UN aimed to protect them and assert their human rights. =0=

Ambassador Lauro Baja’s abuse cases of Pinay maid
Former Philippine Ambassador Lauro l. Baja remains accused by his domestic helper Marichu S. Baoan. Out of the 15 charges, the accuser and her lawyers rounded them to 12 charges that included forced labor, trafficking, peonage, slavery, and involuntary servitude. Her lawyers filed an amended complaint without the the violation of the racketeer influenced and corrupt organization act (RICO).) Baja is given 20 days from August 18, 2009 to answer the charges.
“Baoanan complained that she worked at the Bajas as domestic helper for three months, her visa facilitated by Labaire International Travel. The Bajas collected fees from her, provided her temporary housing and organized her travel from the Philippines to New York. She was forced to work 18 hours a day, seven days a week with no days off for three months and paid merely $100…
Baoanan is taking action under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act, federal and state labor laws, and common law to recover her lawful minimum and overtime wages, other damages, attorneys’ fees. Charges against the Bajas are pretty serious. If true, they reflect the discordant lifestyle of Filipinos that I mentioned in the blog before. The accusations are cautionary tales for Filipinos who dream of ritzy life-styles in USA cum maids in tow, but don’t have enough money, or a least plan to scrimp, to sustain such luxury. Circumventing the law, particularly by high Philippine officials on foreign assignments adds to the multiple black eyes our country suffer in the international stage.
An embarrassing story like Ambassador Baja’s is reminiscent of Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo’s travels outside the country. Feeling the pinch of a jet-setter’s lifestyle with accusations of abuse and extravagance, the president creates an ugly picture about us Filipinos. It's the whole nation that bears the brunt.

On Saturday, August 29, 2009, Sen. Edward (Ted) Kennedy who died this week of malignant glioma, a form of aggressive brain tumor was buried with full honors in Arlington Cemetery in Virginia beside his ill-fated slain brothers Pres. John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert Kennedy.
In a solemn sundown ceremony, the 77 year-old senator was carried to his final resting place attended by close relatives, friends, and millions of admirers who watched in TV. His death marked the closure of a chapter in a colorful life of the legendary Kennedy clan which awed the imagination of many Americans and people of the world.
Edward, the 9th child and youngest in the family of Joseph and Rose Kennedy served as a government official for almost 50 years, leaving with him a mixed legacy of successes and disappointments. His dream to be United States president was dashed by tragedies, personal foibles, and human limitations,
A towering influential figure in Capitol Hill, Edward, the “Lion of the Senate,” was a liberal democrat who reached out across party lines to tackle public issues so diverse as healthcare, immigration, wages, racial bias, gender discrimination, nuclear proliferation, and civil rights. No wonder there had been a lot to say about his contribution and legacy.
A remarried divorcee from Massachusetts, Ted had been a proponent of abortion which proved antithetical to Catholic Church teaching which he professed. Before he died, coinciding Pres. Barack Obama’s visit to Rome, he asked the president to personally deliver his letter to Pope Benedict XVI. The Vatican acknowledged Ted’s outstanding contributions to society and the Holy Father prayed for his solace and comfort during his most difficult time. The plan to make his niece Caroline Kennedy as US ambassador to the Holy See didn’t materialize.
In support of Pres. Obama, his desire to overhaul healthcare is generally lauded for its scope to cover all Americans, but the contentious issues surrounding the bill have been the subject of heated debates. Aside from the cost of healthcare, the proposal has a tendency to “marginalize” the elderly, the chronically ill, and disabled.
There is the pervasive worry that the revamp will lead to more expenses, rationing of services, and the lack of doctors and nurses. Prolonged waiting times for diagnosis and treatment, and more government intrusion to the patient-and-doctor relationship are possible changes if the overhaul is implemented.
America’s healthcare system may end up faltering if funding is drastically cut, making it less possible to have the best medical services that Sen. Edward Kennedy used to extend his life. Because healthcare expenses can’t be sustained in the long haul, there is pressure to scrimp and dictate, endangering the quality of medical services particularly that of ordinary American citizens. North Korean arms shipment to Iran seized by United Arab Emirates
In violation to the sanctions of the United Nations (UN,) North Korea was caught with shipments of arms to Iran. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) intercepted a ship with arms, firing devices, grenades and explosives coming from the reclusive communist country of North Korea. Carried by a ship under Bahamian registry, the cargo was concealed as shipment of oil equipment.
“The Security Council voted on June 12 to adopt a resolution that punishes North Korea for its recent nuclear-bomb test and missile launches through cargo inspections and enforcement of restrictions on financial transactions. The measure calls for the interdiction at seaports, airports or in international waters of any cargo suspected of containing arms or nuclear or missile-related materials going to or from North Korea.”---- Bloomberg.com (08/28/09, Varner, Bill)
The United Arab Emirates unloaded the contraband cargo from North Korea and informed UN of the arms seizure contained in 10 container vans. The world body demanded Iran and North Korea (part of the axis of evil,) for explanation.
Iran consistently denied that its uranium program is not for atomic bomb development, but intended for plants to generate electricity. North Korea conducted bomb tests and denoted missiles in violation of UN sanctions. Nobody fully realizes how medical students work hard in pursuit of fruitful careers no other than our fellow UPian Dr. Elna Nidea-Chia, an accomplished OB-Gynecologist in Naga City. Through the years, the indefatigable lady physician with a winsome smile and no-nonsense ability has nurtured her children with astounding success. I’m so happy and proud for my friend and her children.
Christine Marie, Elna’s first daughter now undergoes dermatology residency training in Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center in Manila. Chiara Mae, her second, finally passed the recent Philippine Medical Board examination. She is on the way to follow Elna's footsteps in the field of birthing and women’s diseases. These accomplishments inspired youngest Kara Lynn Marie, a cum laude medical technology graduate to take medicine at the University of Santo Tomas.
The three smart sisters have their brother Francis as a role-model who now works as a physical therapist in Seattle, Washington with wife Cyril, a tax accountant. The Nidea–Chia children count their outstanding success not only to their loving mom who is the incoming president of the Philippine Medical Association, Bicol Chapter, but to their dad as well---- Dr. Oswald Chia, an anesthesiologist. They are lucky to have their doting aunt Lena Nidea, a retired NYC mentor and affable uncle Allen Nidea, a lawyer based in New York. =0=

California girl kidnapped for 18 years found
A 29-year old woman who was reported missing 18 years ago was found in the creepy home of a convicted rapist in California. Jaycee Dugard was just an 11 year old girl when she was snatched while walking to a bus stop on her way home in Lake Tahoe, East of San Francisco. Until lately no word came about the bizarre case and her whereabouts until police caught up wth Garrido.
In spite of efforts to find her since June 19, 1991, Jaycee remained missing until a parole officer found her living with kidnapper-rapist Philip Craig Garrido. The sex offender was thought to have fathered the kidnapped woman's two girls---children, ages 11 and 15.
Apparently in good health with no health problems, the abducted woman and her kids were living in a complex backyard with concealed tents and sheds behind Garrido’s home. The children never attended school nor were they given medical care all their lives. Relatives of Jaycee cried upon learning of her rescue.
The break to find Jaycee and her girls came when police became suspicious of the children who came to the University of California, Berkeley to distribute religious fliers. Garrido, 58, and his wife Nancy 54, were apprehended in connection to Dugard's protracted detention and were being readied to be charged of the crime. With some religious delusions, neighbors regarded the Garridos to be strange,

Fox News tops viewership ratings: Glenn Beck & Bill O’ Reilly rank high with the audience
The liberal cable TV stations which show partisan politics and make fun of personalities like Sen. Sarah Palin have their disappointment. Hubris, bias and inane programming among possible causes, their cable TV ratings have been going down while Fox has reached new highs. The dominance of Fox News over the mainstream media is clear.
Of all surprises, controversial Glenn Beck’s TV program which is a subject of hateful criticisms from rival stations raked an astounding number of viewers----more than 3 million viewers in its Fox 5PM time slot on August 26, 2009. Despite withdrawal of support from advertisers because of Beck’s charged comments against Pres. Obama, his program with a novel social thought recruited more watchers----rising to the level of popular O’Reilly Factor which airs at 8 PM in the same station.
There is a message here for those who want to crush free speech in this country. Just like what Glenn tackles in his thought-provoking show, people want to be informed and hear ideas other than those drummed up by the government and its minions in the media. As election nears, Mancao points to Estrada and Lacson in Dacer-Corbito murders
Philippines is again simmering with election fever. Among the contenders to run for president in 2010 is the disgraced ex-president Joseph Estrada. The aging actor-politician from San Juan, who was deposed by citizen's demand and haphazardly pardoned by Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo, is bent to come back to power.
Supported by an electorate that appears not to give much premium to competence, integrity, and moral qualifications, Estrada is confident to run for presidency again. Early on, the move to circumvent the laws against his disqualification is on-going. The “rehabilitated” convicted plunderer with meager qualifications, but with strong following is tagged as the mastermind with former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Sen. Panfilo Lacson of the death, 9 years ago, of publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver Emmanuel Corbito.
Former police superintendent Cezar Mancao II, an accused witness, suddenly hugs the headlines again to rub salt on the double murder case which doesn’t get resolved. The players in the killing have muddled up the case. It is not unlikely that Estrada and Lacson are behind the murders, but nothing can be done against them unless they are proven guilty.
“The lawyer of three detained policemen who were also implicated in the crime, said Mancao had testified during the hearing yesterday that the order from Michael Ray Aquino came from Lacson, which in turn, he said came from Malacañang as part of an operation tagged as Oplan Delta. When the prosecution asked Mancao who in Malacañang gave the order, he replied "Estrada." whom he also indentified as "Bigote."---- Daily Tribune (08/27/09)
The renewed interest on Dacer-Corbito may well be connected with the election. This is another chapter in the soap-opera of corrupted politics that the public has been so tired of. On the side, politicians in Manila are busy drawing deals with other politicians in order to win---- rather than think of what they can do to advance the cause of the public good. How then can they focus on solving a sordid murder case?
The aggrieved families of Dacer and Corbito have to wait. With the sluggish court-system, Filipinos get distracted with candidates who have double faces and motives. The voters have been immensely disappointed by Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo. It’s time they focus on electing someone who is guileless and more competent. Sen. Edward Kennedy, 77 dies of brain cancer
Edward (Ted) Kennedy, the 77-year old brother of Pres. John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Sen. Robert Kennedy died after a fight against brain cancer in Massachusetts. The controversial patriarch of the Kennedy clan whose career in the senate spanned almost half a century was a liberal democrat with a strong voice on issues of healthcare, education, immigration, and better wages.
The senator who reached out to colleagues of all political persuasions championed civil rights, defended the poor, worked to end the Vietnam war, and advocated against nuclear proliferation. From all over the world, his death elicited a flurry of recollections and praises for a towering political figure with indelible contribution to public service.
The 9th and youngest child of an influential political family of Joseph and Rose Kennedy, Edward became a senator in the early ‘60s raising hopes that he would one day become president. The legendary saga of his family and career however had been marked by a series of tragedy and personal triumph.
His brothers John Jr. and Robert died on the hands of assassins cutting short their political careers. His bid for the White House was thwarted by Jimmy Carter who won the presidential nomination in 1980. His ambition to hold the highest office of the land was ruined by the Chappaquiddick incident when the car he drove plunged into the river killing a young woman named Mary Jo Kopechne.
Having served briefly in the Army, Edward went to Harvard without finishing his education but graduated in the University of Virginia Law School. He was married to Joan Bennett Kennedy in 1958, but got divorced in 1982.
The white haired, barrel-chested senator with a booming voice remarried a young Washington lawyer named Victoria Reggie. His children included daughter, Kara Kennedy Allen, sons, Edward Jr. and Patrick, the congressman from Rhode Island, and stepchildren, Caroline and Curran Raclin.
Vigorously treated by the best doctors under the current healthcare he wanted to reform, he succumbed to a vicious form of cerebral tumor called malignant glioma. An ardet supporter of Pres. Barack Obama whom he endorsed in the presidential race, he asked his niece Caroline Kennedy to seek the New York senatorial position vacated by Hillary Clinton, but failed.
Proximate to his death, Ted asked his colleagues to revert the choice of a senate replacement for him from election to a gubernatorial selection---- so that the transition of office at the time of his death could be easy. Conflicting economic outlook heightens anxiety of Americans
After Ben Bernanke optimistically declared that there are signs the recession is about to end, on the day of his reappointment as the chairman of the federal reserve, Pres. Obama said the economy is deteriorating. When Obama said that the cost of healthcare will be less, the news was flooded with gloomy forecasts saying otherwise.
The slight improvement of the joblessness reported weeks ago was followed with high umemployment numbers. In town meetings where irate oppositionists gathered to air their frustration. A cadre of optimistic Obama supporters also formed grups to get across their message of the advantages of the healthcare bill, raising the chance of confrontation with those whooppose it. Others who couldn't control their anger accused both sides as rabble-rousers, paid whiners, and representtives of interest groups.
These conflicting messages hadn't help Obama’s administration whose popularity early on was artificially shored by the die-hard elements of partisan media. Majority of Americans wanted him to succeed, but his job approval didn't keep up with the momentum of his leadership. There is confusion and frustration out there. The ex-vice president Dick Cheney complained, the White House has a lot of doubts now.

There is worsening of the economic outlook. There are fears that the budget deficit will put Obama’s reform in peril. The dollar is losing influence in the world market. home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.
In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Supreme Court steps in the National Artist controversy
A lifetime recognition like being a National Artist carries prestige. People work hard to be worthy of such a coveted honor. Yet, for this year’s selection, sharp objections to 4 out of 7 nominees incite a firestorm of protests that has reached the Supreme Court (SC). The highest court in Manila temporarily put a hold order in the conferment of the award to thresh out a controversy.
The search for nominees of the prestigious recognition this year was undertaken by the National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCAA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) boards. A short list after a careful search of awardees was submitted for approval of Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo. But in an overextended exercise of power, it is alleged, the president dropped fpir (4) nominees namely Lazaro Francisco (posthumous) for literature), Dr. Ramon Santos (music), Manuel Conde (posthumous) for film and broadcast, and Federico Aguilar Alcuaz (visual arts, painting, sculpture, and mixed media).
Gloria instead chose Cecile Guidote Alvarez (theater), Magno Jose Carlo Caparas (visual arts and film), Jose 'Pitoy' Moreno (fashion design), and Francisco 'Bobby' Mañosa (architecture). The resultant controversy distracted the public from the parallel embarrassment brought by the extravagant dinners reported during Gloira's travel in the USA.
The president’s action on the nominees led to angry protests from at least four past Natioanl Artist awardees, the Concerned Artists of the Philippines, community groups and private citizens. Airing their grievances in rallies, they who did not agree with GMA. The national artists insisted her choices were less worthy than those that were originally chosen by the selection body. They petitioned the SC to intervene and rule on the case.
It’s amazing how the wholesome and inspiring cultural exercise like choosing our National Artists can be corrupted. Though winners may receive the honor, recognition, and the monetary benefits that the award carries, it is extremely shameful, if true, that the list of nominees have been tampered by the president.
Inured to power abuse and corruption, Malacanang Palace tends to shrug off this new allegtion---another gross assault to our cultural pride. Michael Jackson’s death ruled as homicide
After a month of investigation, the Los Angeles Coroners office issued a preliminary report ruling that Michael Jackson, the famed King of Pop, died of homicide. The initial toxicology result revealed Jackson had toxic levels of propofol, a potent anesthetic on the day of death on June 25, 2009. --- http://www.thesmoking gun.com/
Dr. Conrad Murray, the singer’s personal physician who said Jackson appeared to have developed an addiction to medications had been a subject of criminal probe. He claimed he attempted to pull him out of the habit. Aside from propofol, Jackson was injected two sedatives (lorazepam and midazolam) which probably potentiated the effects of profolol.

Short lifespan of Russians blamed on alcohol and tobacco
If the average age of death is 78 years among American men and about 64 among Filipinos, with Russian men, its below 60 years old. More than half of all Russian deaths at ages 15 to 54 can be attributed to alcohol and/or to cigarette smoking.

United Nations disclosed that the Russian population is shrinking by half a percent per year due early deaths. The demographic crisis which alarms authorities makes deaths more common than births. Though the government launched an advertising campaign to discourage smoking and drinking, cigarette is peddled cheaply at 30 cents per pack and beer at less than a 1 dollar per bottle. Death & cost of terminal care are still taboo among many patients
The provision of reimbursing time given by physicians to counsel patients on end-of-life issues elicited unease and horror among many Americans. Sen. Sarah Palin spoke against it in terms of “death panels” and others thought the measure was a step towards euthanasia. Such fear is expected. The Obama administration debunked these fears as myths.
The public has been reluctant to talk about advance directives, health proxies, and power of attorneys as “rationing” loomed. If money becomes too tight in the healthcare budget, control on who gets the services may be inevitable in USA.
Not representing the majority of US licensed physicians, the American Medical Association (AMA) believes compensating MDs to discuss options of a terminal patient is OK. It saves on expenses while clarifying voluntarily issues about the death process. Upon request however, free advice on life and the dying has been available in medical care since time immemorial. Why then does the government want to shell in additional money for counseling when it is part of healthcare all along? Obviously, money has something to do with it.
“Studies have shown that the 5% of Medicare patients who die each year account for 30% of Medicare's costs, with 78% of last-year-of-life expenses occurring in the month before death. A March 9 Archives of Internal Medicine study of 603 dying cancer patients at seven hospitals, oncology clinics and hospices found that care for patients who had end-of-life discussions with their physicians cost $1,295, compared with $2,780 for patients who did not have such talks.
Anthony L. Back, MD, professor of oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine and an oncologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center,said “encouraging physicians to have extended counseling sessions with their patients through the Medicare system could help patients get the care they want at the end of their lives while saving the health system money.”---AMA News. The counseling supported by AMA may remove barriers and misconceptions in tackling death, but there are practically no rules on what and how the doctor will share his advice. Physicians are inadequately trained on dispensing end-of-life advices. There is a possibility that patients and their relatives may be pressured in their decisions. =0=

ADA not so happy about Obama’s healthcare bill
The American Dental Association (ADA) is not all smiles for the Obama healthcare reform. Reason? The new proposal doesn’t increase Medicaid payment rates and doesn’t decrease the administrative burden in taking care of indigent patients. The healthcare revamp doesn’t answer the dentist’s main concern--- the need to fix the Medicaid payment scheme which pays less than cost of keeping the business. ADA does not approve of a single-payer plan if it will mandate their compulsory participation.
For lack of monetary incentive, only about 15%-20% of dentists service Medicaid patients and some dentists opt to just give free treatment because of low and tedious reimbursement process.
Yet there are provisions in the bill that ADA supports. The group somehow agrees with the new house bill and the Senate Health Labor and Pensions (HELP) plan of expanding dental care---more for prevention treatment and infrastructure funding.

A slow recovery from recession is still a threat according to Dr. Doom
Nouriel Roubini, the economics guru of NYU who accurately predicted the morbid economic meltdown still warns of a double dip recession in spite of the rosy forecast made this week by the chairman of the board of governors of the US Federal Reserve Ben Bernanke--- that there are indicators that the recession is wearing away.
Called Dr. Doom for his precise economic forecasts, Roubini shared his thought-provoking opinion in an article he wrote in Ft. com (Financial Times) on Sunday August 23, 2009 entitled “The risk of a double dip recession is rising.”
Unlike many optimists who want to have a rapid V-shaped recovery, Roubini thinks a U-shaped slow healing from the economic downturn is more likely to occur, probably within a two-year period.
Among the Roubini's reasons for a sluggish recovery are the rising unemployment in US and other parts of the world topping 10% till next year. A crisis in solvency prevents banks to lend and the private sector to invest. Consumers are cutting on expenses. The financial system has still to recover from the damage and losses incurred during the meltdown. Energy and food prices are still rising. Obama’s projected budget deficit jumps from $7.108 trillion to $9 trillion
When Americans were told that under Pres. Barack Obama's term, the 10-year US budget deficit will reach more than $7 trillion, they could only sigh in disappointment. This was not the promise they heard during the campaign. Under Obama’s talk when he sought the presidency, he assured: USA could ride the tide of economic crisis with less spending and less worry. It was not the case.
The deficit forecast was worse than what the White House optimistically insisted. Even with $1.3 trillion deficit Obama inherited from Pres. George Bush, a jump to $9 trillion had been staggering. Amidst promises to overhaul healthcare, improve education, and bring back the country to prosperity, mounting doubts continued to erode the trust Obama enjoyed since the election. Talks of economic recovery was not consistent with persistent high unemployment.
In keeping with original forecast of the Congressional Budget Office issued early in early 2009, the budget deficit in 2010 to 2019 is expected to reach a staggering $9.1 trillion. The disclosure brings more uncertainty and trepidation to the public that tries to make sense of the planned healthcare overhaul which will cost the government greater than $1 trillion in a nine years.
Republicans are quick to point out the excessive spending of Obama. Many question how America can pay and at the same time keep its credit rating in the world market with such huge deficit.
Economists wonder if the administration can stop heavy spending without raising taxes which can slacken eeconomic growth. Time is running out for Obama to convince the Americans that he is on the right track.(Photo Credit: nmfbihop) =0=

Man-made organism opens questions on the limits of genomic science
Controversial scientist Dr. Craig Venter, the noted American biologist who tinkers with the genetic code has announced scientists are on the verge of making a synthetic bacterium from a combination of genetic splices from certain organisms. Speaking from the J. Craig Venter Research Institute in Maryland, the visionary of genomic investigations said researchers have figured to circumvent a key obstacle in the production of simple biologic agents.
Venter says “within months” a vital breakthrough in gene manipulation will unfold to give way to the first man-made species of organism. His team brings a lot of hope to advance research and the potential uses of the genetic engineering. But it also summons doubts.
Laboratory-created organisms can be prodded to make antibiotics and vaccines to combat diseases. With synthetic biologic agents, researchers can build enzymes to fight pollution. A man-made species of algae can be tasked to gobble up pollutants and chemical debris in the ocean floor. Scientists can use tailored bacteria to produce drugs, proteins, and biologic agents of myriad uses.
Venter's Man-Made Organism & Curie's Radioactive Radium
The development of an artificial organism is akin to what Warsaw-born Nobel prize awardee Marie Curie came to know when she bumped on the uses of radium during her studies in a makeshift laboratory in Paris, France. As a result of her astounding scientific work, the radioactive materials became a beneficial agent to diagnose and fight cancer as we know today.
However, radium’s unleashed energy Curie understood, was the basis of something sinisterly horrific---like the dreaded nuclear bomb which killed untold number of innocent people in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Since then, the specter of the misuse of uranium energy stalked the survival of people.
Like radium and uranium research during Curie’s time, Venter’s technology, is not error-proof. With the good uses of their discoveries, comes danger which may put the human race in jeopardy. At present, relying mostly on suppposed credibility, there are very few regulations to oversee the safety of how scientists like Venter keep and manipulate the genetic code of living things. They practically have no accountability. Few people know how their new-found knowledge will be applied and where their discoveries will lead to.
Polar Uses of Scientific Research
While we focus on the positive sides of scientific researches, the experimentations on the basic unit of life can bring “angels” and “devils” flying. In spite of the assurances that studies are safe and are undertaken for “peaceful” purposes only, there is a cause of concern. Whether we are inspired by the universal benefits of these researches or we are stirred by self-gratification, there are moral and ethical questions that we have to grapple. To make an living organism is an ambitious science. Are we playing God?
The synthesized organism can generate precursors of deadly organisms that terrorists will love to get in waging a biologic warfare. On the other hand, it can produce disease-fighting immunoglobulins that can prevent or cure some of the world’s worst afflictions.
God silently watch over man’s folly and fancy. Without proper regulations and oversight, the production of synthetic organisms can be our next Pandora’s box. It teems with benevolent and evil surprises. =0=

Election change proposal by Sen. Ted Kennedy smacks with partisan politics?
Hampered by brain cancer, Sen. Edward Kennedy (Massachusetts-D) requested lawmakers in his state to change the law in anticipation of a vacancy that may occur if he dies in office. He wanted to do away with the current law requiring an election to replace the vacancy. Missing Washington due to his incapacity, he thought a delay in selecting his replacement can affect the voting outcome of a democrat-dominated legislature.
Yet back in 2004 when Kennedy’s fellow party-member John Kerry ran for presidency, he spearheaded and successfully junked the law of gubernatorial choice in replacing the vacancy because it was Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican and member of the opposite party who would choose a replacement if Kerry won as president.
So what he asks the Massachusetts lawmakers now is a complete turnabout, calculated to benefit his party. With a dominant Democatric party, Kennedy' proposal will likely be decided on his favor. However, many recall the controversies of selecting a replacement by the governor. The choices for Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in Chicago and New York when they became president and secretary of state respectively were marred by disappointments. UP Ibalon son among winners in China Math Competition
An elementary grader and two high school students of Naga City won bronze medals from the recently concluded international China Math Olympiad hosted by the People’s Republic of China.
In a rigorous mathematics competition held in Ziamen and Tianjin last August 11 to 16, 2009, high school students John Reiner Bulaong of Ateneo de Naga University, Brian James Masalunga of Hope Christian School, and 6th grader Joseph Maria de Leon bagged the medals among a total of 90 garnered by the Philippine team.

Lockerbie bomber goes home to Libya with a rousing welcome
“There's plenty of shame to go around. This is not justice. It's an abrogation of justice," said Stephanie Bernstein, wife of a lawyer who died on the flight blown up by terrorists.
The only person indicted and imprisoned for the 1988 dastardly bombing of the jetliner over Lockerbie, Scotland was released from prison on “humanitarian’ grounds by Scottish officials. Suffering from terminal prostate cancer, Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, a former Libyan operative returned home in Tripoli, Libya on Thursday, August 20, 2009 afte being allowed freedom. He served only 8 years of his lifetime jail sentence and was set free amidst cheers from about a thousand jubilant supporters who met him in the airport as a "hero."
But relatives of those innocent passengers of Pan Am Flight 103 fumed over the decision, some openly expressing their devastation, saying that there is no justice for those 259 passengers who died. Although it was claimed that compassion was the reason behind giving freedom to the bomber, politics could have played in setting him free from the Scottish prison. High mercury contamination in fish found in US
In a recent study disclosed by the US Geological Survey, mercury contamination had almost universal presence in fish caught in the streams in America. About a thousand fish were tested from almost 300 streams in the country. All of them had traces of mercury. A fourth of the results came out with levels that were beyond the tolerable level the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) deemed safe for people. (Source: Globe Newspaper/ Boston.com/ AP)
Highest levels of mercury were detected in fish found in streams and coasts of the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and Louisiana. The finding could be an ominous reminder of the need for more pollution control and environmental conservation. Warnings previously raised to inform the public must be stressed.
Adverse Effects of Mercury
Poisoning from mercury can occur as an acute process arising from airborne emissions from coal and industrial wastes. Mercury is found in common household items such as batteries and bathroom cleaners. The metal can cause nervous system impairment, developmental retardation, incoordination, and learning disabilities in susceptible individuals including the unborn and young children.
Mercury is known to cause acrodyna (pink disease; painful extremities) which presents with soreness and reddish rash of distal extremities, irritability, loss of appetite, sweating, photophobia, sleep disturbances, and skin eruptions. Its non-specific manifestations are insiduous and early cases are hard to detect.
The body organs involved are often the nervous system (central and peripheral nervous sytem dysfunction,) gastrointestinal tract (gastroenteritis) and kidneys (tubular necrosis, renal insufficiency).
Recent exposures include contamination of fish in Minamata Bay in Japan (1960) resulting to a disabling neurologic illness called Minamata disaeas. Mercury-tainted fish and seafood had been reported in Canada while contamination of grains were found in Iraq (1960, 1970) and in the United States (1996). Together with lead, arsenic, cadium, and polyvinyl chloride, mercury had been encountered in toys for children. In the past, mercury was an ingredient of diuretics, antibacterial agents, and laxatives used as medicines. It had been used as a part of sphygmomanometers, thermometers and other medical instruments.
More recently, a controversy on the presence of mercury in some vaccine preservatives (thimerosal) raised its possible link to autism which remains unproven. A touchy issue about pregnant women eating potentially contaminated fish and the use of amalgam in dental flllings have not been fully resolved.
Not until mercury was withdrawn from drug manufacture that adverse toxiciy had become uncommon. In whatever form, the metal is toxic. It can be ingested, inhaled, injected, and absorbed on the skin. Due to the widespread use of mercury-bearing fuel fossils and agricultural products, exposure and contamination remain a health problem in the green world.=0=

Iraq bloodbath kills 95
Iraqis who have been used to killings that average about 200-300 per month are alarmed by the recent carnage that brought 95 dead and more than 500 injured. The deaths come from coordinated detonation of cars, trucks, and mortars on key targets in Baghdad---among the deadliest this year. One such bomb has exploded near the finance ministry wounding at least 200 people, mostly innocent civilians. Two Al Qaeda militants were arrested in connection with the senseless blasts.
“I am saddened that the violence continues, including an appalling string of attacks today in Baghdad which took the lives of scores of innocent people," UN Sec. Gen. Ban Ki-moon ABCNews (08/19/09, Barker, A.)
A Sunni politician Falah Hassan Zeidan condemned the terrorist attacks in the city where the parliament, national government, and international community are located. Admitted by government officials, he complained of the laxity of the security men tasked to keep peace in the area.
