A fresh record of deaths and injuries came when a suspected suicide bomber exploded an explosive-packed car close to a provincial legislative assembly that was in session in Peshawar. The blast killed 50 people and wounded about 120 more on Friday October 9, 2009. Debris and rubble from the blast laid scattered in the streets where mangled bodies, among them children and women were found.

The new attack forced about 80,000 civilians to flee the area for fear of an offensive against terrorist elements affiliated with the Taliban. It was believed the bombing was a retaliation against the government’s plan to wage a campaign against the Taliban and Al Qaeda insurgents in South Waziristan where they congregate.
