Billy Mays' autopsy revealed heart disease as probable cause of death
The sudden death of Billy Mays, TV’s popular endorser of household products was a surprise and many of his fans want to know why. Feeling unwell before he slept, he was found dead in his Tampa, FL condominium last Sunday, June 28, 2009.
In an autopsy conducted, Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Vernard Adams said Mays could have died of a heart attack during his sleep. He suffered from hypertension and the left ventricle of his heart was enlarged.
Though more lab tests will be done to confirm the cause of death, there was no evidence of injury after he bumped his head during a rough plane landing in a trip from Philadelphia to Tampa prior to his demise.
The successful bearded 50-year old amiable pitchman of home products who popularized and sold household aids such as detergents, cleaners, and gadgets in TV suffered from hip problems. He planned to have surgery, but was found unresponsive, cold and cyanotic in bed. His wife called 911. Apparently he was dead.
Billy left his wife Deborah, a 3 year old son and a stepson past his teens. The initial post-mortem findings somehow provided some closure to the passing of Mays who will sorely be missed.
Of course there are other news worth paying attention to----the impending withdrawal of US troops in Iraqi cities that pose danger to the peace and order of the country, the coup d' etat of Honduras that ousted its president, the crash of a Yemeni jetliner with 150 on board in the Indian Ocean, and the continuing civil protest after the rigged Iranian election, among others. In a statement Madoff’s wife Ruth who was not charged of a crime spoke of her shame and embarrassment, saying she too was betrayed. Most of those who followed the case, including the victims believe, Madoff who lived an extravagant life, got what he deserved.
His clients had been hurting since the discovery of the fraud. The 71 year-old former Nasdaq chairman apologized for his wrongdoing which ruined the finances of many. After a 6-minute statement of regret, the king of Ponzi was led by gurards to a solitary maximum security seclusion at the Manhattan Federal jail. Ibalonian archeologist in New York for the Henry Luce Foundation seminar
Among those who attended the recently concluded seminar of the American Council of Learned Societies---Henry Luce Foundation are past fellows and Southeast Asian archeologists. Held in Tarrytown, New York this June 2009, Ibalonian Stephen Bercasio Acabado of Tinambac, Camarines Sur, a faculty member of the Department of Anthropology of University Hawaii attended the conference.
Stephen who has interest in Archaeology, Landscape, GIS, Heritage Management, Southeast Asia, Philippines presented an abstract (part of his dissertation) during the conference. Previously a teaching associate of UP Department of Anthropology (Diliman) and a lecturer of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in Ateneo de Manila University, Acabado has been awarded a string of research grants and fellowships which includes the Henry Luce for East Asian Archaeology (2007) and NSF Dissertation Improvement Grant (2006)

Cebu jailbirds dance in homage to Michael Jackson
As the tragic details of Michael Jackson’s life are revealed to the world, many of his admirers cope up with the his untimely demise in many ways. Immediately after learning the grim news, many fans converged outside the UCLA Medical Center to find out what happened. In Apollo Theatre at the Harlem section of New York, a crowd gathered to remember and pay tribute the fallen music giant.
Half way across the globe, in the Philippines, about 1,500 inmates of the Cebu Penitentiary staged “Thriller” the dance they performed before that caught the fancy of You Tube viewers throughout the world. Their performance was viewed by almost 25 million people after it was made available in the internet. Grieving for their idol, the prisoners of the maximum security jail last Saturday gave their all dancing to the tune of Michael Jackson’s hit songs.
“After being told of Jackson's death Thursday in Los Angeles, the 1,500 inmates at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center hit the exercise yard, practicing for nine hours Friday night – and into the wee hours of Saturday morning – for the show.
They took breaks only to eat or when it rained, said professional choreographer Gwendolyn Lador, hired by the prison to teach the inmates the dance.

Pres. Gloria Arroyo’s foreign travels questioned
It’s not only how frequent Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo travels abroad that legislators question---but the sheer number of companions in those costly trips. These travels are suspected to be extensions of abuse and corruption.
According to Sen. Francis (Chiz) Escudero, the president went to at least 50 trips local and abroad lasting at least 130 days since 2001. In these travels, there are few benefits that trickle down to the Filipinos except the bloated claims of furthering “business relations, foreign investments, jobs for Filipinos, enhanced tourism, greater foreign economic assistance and other unspecified benefits.”

Filipinos are known to pride themselves of their stints abroad---especially if they are paid for by taxpayer’s money and for reasons that are flimsy. Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo is no exception. She tags along friends and relatives no different than the ways of Imelda Marcos.
Many are wondering what hidden reasons the president of the Philippines has for leaving the country so often. It’s just right to investigate so the Filipinos will know.
Arroyo brings along many companions very characteristic of a politician who uses money of the government. She easily decides to make side-trips jacking up expenses that can better pay for budgets in underfunded public schools, hospitals, penitentiary, and orphanages back home.

RP ranks 5th in shabu production and seizure
Methamphetamine, an illicit drug called shabu has for decades been produced in the Philippines. It is used locally or traded under the radar screen of law enforcers in neighboring countries in Asia and the Western World. Our country follows China, Thailand, USA, and Taiwan as the leading sources of methamphetamines between 1988 to 2007.
Fifth (5th) among the top sources of seized shabu in the past decade (ending 2007,) Philippines busts about 10 illegal laboratories that produce the narcotics. In spite of step-up fight, nacrcotics labs number about 700 facilities---up from only 46 a decade ago in the Americas.
In the order of decreasing popularity, the top three most popular drugs used in the Phiippine islands are shabu, marijuana, and ecstasy.

Tropical storm Feria brings flooding and deaths in RP
In the aftermath of the tropical storm “Feria,” comes the death of at least 8 persons, disappearance of 11 individuals and flooding in various parts of the country as reported by the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC). Majority of those who disappeared are fishermen who braved the turbulent seas in Eastern and Central Visayas.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said 8,978 stranded passengers were recorded at 11 p.m. of June 24, 2009. However, only 1,389 remained hampered to travel as Feria left and headed northwards to Taiwan.
The PCG disclosed most of the stranded travelers were from 13 ports, mainly in the Bicol and Southern Luzon provinces. Of the 1,389 passengers, 370 were at the Batangas port, 200 in Pilar, Sorsogon and 165 people in Tabaco, Albay.

Charlie’s Angel Farrah Fawcett succumbs to cancer
Popular American movie and TV star Farrah Fawcett died at the age of 62 after a lingering battle with malignancy. The long-time companion of actor Ryan O’Neal had been diagnosed and treated for anal carcinoma for about 3 years until the disease recurred and spread to multiple organs of her body.

Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, Farrah, who was most known for her appearances in the TV hit “Charlies Angels” was a fantasy girl in Hollywood and for many people worldwide. Her marriage to Lee Majors in 1973 ended in a divorce. She was survived by 24 year-old son Redmond and long time friend, Ryan O’Neal. Farrah and Ryan to marry was overtaken by her untimely death. King of Pop Michael Jackson is dead
King of pop Michael Jackson, 50, suffered cardiac arrest this afternoon June 25, 2009. Rushed to UCLA Medical Center in California in deep coma, he died at 3:15 PM PT in spite of heroic application of emergency measures.
Paramedics responded to a 911 call from the Jackson home and went to assist Michael whose heart stopped and was not breathing. All resuscitative measures failed.
The popular celebrity with prodigious talent and monumental fame started out as a child star in a band called “The Jackson 5” in the ‘70s catapulting him to full stardom. He was slated to have a series of 50 shows this year, all sold-out, starting this month in England.

The cause of his death is yet to be determined. But there are persistent rumors that Michael's health has not been good. Cory Aquino returns to hospital
Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, the son of former Pres. Cory Aquino said his mother was confined in the hospital because of lack of appetite. The 76 year-old widow of Ninoy Aquino had been battling colonic cancer since May last year.
Cory who subsists on fruits, crackers, soup and Ensure milk but has lately shown poor appetite which doctors hope to correct with intravenous nutrition.

Natural defense against H1N1 flu among Filipinos & the potential economic impact of the pandemic in poor countries
In spite of the aggressive surveillance of the swine flu, the pandemic has basically spilled in the community raising the number of those stricken ill to 604 as of June 24, 2009. The rapid transmission in Metro Manila is expected to increase as more cases are identified. Nobody knows how the disease spread will end.
In a Wall Street blog by Shirley Wang on June 23, 2009, the World Bank has estimated that the pandemic may bring far-reaching negative economic impact in countries that are poor. In Mexico where the swine influenza started, it is estimated that tourism has dropped to 43%. Citing a 2006 study, World Bank says that the low end impact of the illness is a contraction of about 0.7% of global GDP similar to the Hong Kong flu of 1968-69. A high end impact can contract global GDP by 4.8% like the 1918-1919 Spanish flu. This is something to watch when the next flu season arrives. Countries with limited funds and facilities to fight the disease are most vulnerable to get the worst effects of the pandemic.
If greater than 80% of the illness is self-limiting---i.e. the viral infection heals by itself, then the main body defense is likely the person’s immunity. A breakdown of the immune response in persons with chronic illnesses or conditions of immunosuppression will therefore put a person at risk of getting sick or dying. People catching the virus at the same time disrupt the workplace. Productivity is undermined when illness prevents people from working.
If the new virus mutates to a deadly form, the picture may change for the worse when the genetic change turns towards the acquisition of more virulence. Influenza viruses which acquire traits of greater virulence have the capacity to sicken more people.
The techniques of prevention still apply to avoid getting ill. Constant hand-washing, educational seminars to understand the nature of the disease, avoiding huge crowds and quarantine of those suspected of having disease appreciably lowers the number of infection. Case finding and treating those who harbor signs of illness on time will help avoid transmission in the community.
The use of seasonal flu vaccine (vs. the vaccine against the new swine strain) is not expected to protect against the H1N1 flu and thus may end up just a wastage of money. The vaccine which will accomplish protection for swine flu is still under development in laboratories abroad.
Anti-virals (Tamiflu) may be used to ameliorate the signs of the disease, but their efficacy to foil the new H1N1 flu is basically equivocal. Angelita de Leon-Pena’s job experience comes from years of sterling service in the corporate world and from human interactions that count. For many years she has worked as the assistant vice-president of New York Mellon Bank after serving in Corporate Trust Department of US Bank, the State Street Bank, Citibank (NY,) and the Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Naga City, Philippines.
The affable lady that I know since our days in Naga City has surely greater knowledge than what she knows about the financial health of America. She is now the incoming president of the Bicol National Association of America (BNAA,) a coalition of organizations of Bicolanos across the United States.
For many Bicolanos from California to New York, from Boston to Miami, from Hawaii to Alaska to Georgia these milestones are miniscule compared to Lita's desire, like her ardent friends in BNAA and the Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotees Asssociation (OLPDA) to serve the community.
More than the drudgery of plain living away from native Bicol, it is her passion to come up with something magnanimous for Filipinos in the enlarging diaspora. Her lively wit and sophistication are never dull. She is a fountain of inspiration---especially when she starts asking some gritty questions like, “How can we unite all Bicolanos in America? What can we do to help the people of the Philippines?”
Filipino-Americans (Fil-Ams) know the next president of the BNAA has her views. When she deals with issues of utmost importance, she stirs the pot with rationality and wisdom. As her impeccable credentials show, the beneficient angel from Naga does her civics well.
Lita is busy laying the ground work to host a reunion which will draw Bicolanos to the Northeast in a July 17-19, 2009 convention. The group’s reunion next month will tie-up bonds, recharge friendships, and drum up fresh humanitarian projects for the organization. With fellow-Bicolanos working with her, she will gather kababayans, Fil-Ams, their friends, and families from all over America and elsewhere for a tastefully planned merry get-together.
Would you believe you’re invited? Or would you believe we're all invited? BNAA, like OLPDA, is a welcoming group ready to open its arms. In a giveaway expression of real hospitality, the reunion is open to as many Fil-Ams as possible particularly Bicolanos.
In 2002, Lita walked as the grand marshal of the Philippine Day Organizing Committee in Passaic, NJ. Shunning self-importance, she worked hard as a board member in the well-known Philippine Independence Day Committee (PIDC) of New York City. With unrelenting duties at home and in the community, she proved to be an dedicated adviser of the Bicolandia National Association of America of the Eastern Seaboard, USA (BNAA-Eastern Seaboard) and OLPDA.
The leader with a beaming persona gave away precious time in 2003 to be the overall chairwoman of the Philippine American Friendship Committee, Inc. To forge unity the following year, Lita assumed headship of the Philippine American Friendship, Inc. Community Development Center (PAFCOM – CDC.) What more can one ask? Along with Peng, her devoted husband, she was named by the New Jersey Parent Foundation as the 2000 Parent of the Year---a coveted distinction that brought sparks of inspiration to family-oriented souls across races and backgrounds.
As a keynote speaker, in 2002, the Bicol Canada, Inc, (Etobicoke, Canada) presented Lita a certificate of appreciation for her selfless service to Bicolanos as she helped improve the quality of life in Jersey City and in the Bicol Region.
A dynamic lady leader who kindly encouraged Filipinos to embark on community undertakings, Lita was given the Women’s Achiever’s Award by Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and by the Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League of Jersey City. She received a certificate of appreciation from the mayor citing her outstanding commitment and continuous support for the Filipino American Veterans Organization of New Jersey. Given a service award in 2007, she was likewise cited for brilliant leadership and dedication by the BNAA-Eastern Seaboard.
Lita graduated from the Colegio de Sta. Isabel High School in Naga City. She finished her college education at the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) in Manila, Philippines where she earned her accounting and business administration degree.
Married to Eufronio Pena of Naga City, she is a proud and loving mom of three wonderful children--- Eduardo, married to Marsha Rafanan, Ysadora, married to Alan Clarin and Eric, married to Ivy Damian. Angelita de Leon-Pena’s job experience comes from years of sterling service in the corporate world and from human interactions that count. For many years she has worked as the assistant vice-president of New York Mellon Bank after serving in Corporate Trust Department of US Bank, the State Street Bank, Citibank (NY,) and the Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Naga City, Philippines.
The affable lady that I know since our days in Naga City has surely greater knowledge than what she knows about the financial health of America. She is now the incoming president of the Bicol National Association of America (BNAA,) a coalition of organizations of Bicolanos across the United States.
For many Bicolanos from California to New York, from Boston to Miami, from Hawaii to Alaska to Georgia these milestones are miniscule compared to Lita's desire, like her ardent friends in BNAA and the Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotees Asssociation (OLPDA) to serve the community.
More than the drudgery of plain living away from native Bicol, it is her passion to come up with something magnanimous for Filipinos in the enlarging diaspora. Her lively wit and sophistication are never dull. She is a fountain of inspiration---especially when she starts asking some gritty questions like, “How can we unite all Bicolanos in America? What can we do to help the people of the Philippines?”
Filipino-Americans (Fil-Ams) know the next president of the BNAA has her views. When she deals with issues of utmost importance, she stirs the pot with rationality and wisdom. As her impeccable credentials show, the beneficient angel from Naga does her civics well.
Lita is busy laying the ground work to host a reunion which will draw Bicolanos to the Northeast in a July 17-19, 2009 convention. The group’s reunion next month will tie-up bonds, recharge friendships, and drum up fresh humanitarian projects for the organization. With fellow-Bicolanos working with her, she will gather kababayans, Fil-Ams, their friends, and families from all over America and elsewhere for a tastefully planned merry get-together.
Would you believe you’re invited? Or would you believe we're all invited? BNAA, like OLPDA, is a welcoming group ready to open its arms. In a giveaway expression of real hospitality, the reunion is open to as many Fil-Ams as possible particularly Bicolanos.
In 2002, Lita walked as the grand marshal of the Philippine Day Organizing Committee in Passaic, NJ. Shunning self-importance, she worked hard as a board member in the well-known Philippine Independence Day Committee (PIDC) of New York City. With unrelenting duties at home and in the community, she proved to be an dedicated adviser of the Bicolandia National Association of America of the Eastern Seaboard, USA (BNAA-Eastern Seaboard) and OLPDA.
The leader with a beaming persona gave away precious time in 2003 to be the overall chairwoman of the Philippine American Friendship Committee, Inc. Obama’s approval rating falls
After a very strong start early in presidency, popular Barack Obama is now experiencing an erosion of his approval rating as the Rasmussen reports the following salient findings as of Monday, June 22, 2009. His approval index has dropped to negative (-1).
33% of voters strongly approve
34% of voters strongly disapprove
(-1) net approval index
Among other findings from the survey, many voters still blame the Bush administration for the faltering economy, but the number has fallen to 54%----8 points down from last month. This indicates that the problem of the economy during the change of leadership is getting to be attributed to Obama rather than Bush.
The consumer confidence according to the survey is at its lowest level in the last two months. Americans are equally divided on whether to push through with healthcare reform now (46%) or wait on a later date to coincide with economic recovery(45%).
There is doubt on the massive spending Obama has laid out for the bailout of banks, mortgage institutions, auto industry and private companies which many believe compromises taxpayers’ money. If the economy improves (i.e. it comes out of the recession) Obama’s numbers are expected to rebound to his favor. Iran election crisis continues as the world watches
Opposition to the recent election which civil society deemed fraudulent continued with thousands of angry protesters clashing with government security officers in Iran. Supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi, the defeated rival of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continued to spill into Tehran streets to denounce the rigged election last June 12, 2009 in spite of warnings from the Revolutionary Guard to be prepared for a bloody confrontation.
The protesters who were attacked by teargas, truncheons, and guns demanded a rerun of the election that was riddled with irregularities.
Iranian TV reported at least 17 so far were killed and more than 400 were wounded in last Saturday’s riots. One of those who died was Neda Soltani, a young woman whose demise had become the inspiration of more mass actions. A memorial service for the martyred lady was rejected by authorities to prevent her from becoming a flashpoint of continued rebellion.
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said: “We are worried and particularly saddened over the violence and loss of life that this is creating and we ask the Iranian government to urgently adopt conditions to create a peaceful solution to the internal crisis. US Pres. Barack Obama expressed his support to the protesters, but many criticize him for not speaking strongly for human rights and democratic principles.
In the past few days, the US, Britain, France, and other European countries asked the Iranian leadership to respect human rights, democratic process, and halt all violence against the people. The Iranian government responded by calling these countries “irresponsible and intrusive.”
As the protesters mull on their next move, a demonstration has been scheduled on Thursday, June 25, 2009. In solidarity with the Iranian protesters, similar rallies against the Iranian rogue regime have been staged in London, Hamburg, Paris, Berlin, Istanbul, Washington, Kuwait City, Tokyo, and other major cities of the world. Philippines reports first death of swine flu
At a time when the country registered 445 cases of H1N1 flu, the first mortality to the viral infection came to a 49 year old woman who suffered from complications of congestive heart failure following a heart attack.
According to Dr. Yolanda Oliveros, director for the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control, the victim who had pre-existing heart disease developed signs of flu on June 17, 2009. This underscores the higher risk of mortality among those with medical conditions which lower the resistance against flu----those who are immunocompromised or suffer from chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, asthma, cancer and the likes.
Related to the flu pandemic, 8 more schools temporarily closed after some of their students contracted the swine flu. At the rate the infection spreads, Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy testified to the house hearing that it’s possible 25% (about 22 million) of the population can be stricken by the illness. Barbara Boxer’s narcissistic request from a military general---“ Please, call me senator!”
I only knew of US Sen. Barbara Boxer (Democrat-CA) when she complained to General Michael Walsh of the US Army Corps of Engineers to stop addressing her as “ma’am.” She demanded to be called “senator.” According to her "she worked so hard for earn that title." Hmmm.
In the military lingo, "ma'am," and "sir" had been time-tested addresses that express respect. Gen. Walsh replied “ma’am” to one of Boxer's questions during a hearing in Capitol Hill on Tuesday, June 16, 2009. The general didn’t mean any insult, disrespect or usurpaton of rank, but Boxer wasn't happy:
"You know, do me a favor," Boxer told the general.
"Could you say 'senator' instead of 'ma'am?'"
"Yes, ma'am," Gen. Walsh answered.
“It's just a thing, I worked so hard to get that title, so I'd appreciate it, yes, thank you," she said.
"Yes, senator," he responded.
Sen. Boxer’s words were not totally unexpected. It seemed few people were aware of what she represented as a person and as a politician. Perhaps on the verge of melancholia or for lack of esteem, she might have inwardly fallen to crave for self-importance. She is the chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.
Not so many remember the California senator who voted against a resolution condemning MoveOn.org, a political group questioning Gen. David Petraeus patriotism--- negating his admirable military leadership in the stabilizing Iraq.
For sure, our military servicemen like Generals Petraeus and Walsh deserve respect. They must not be subjected to the arrogant narcissistic condescension of elected officials like Boxer. The woman seems too touchy to be out of climacterium. She can have problems that the public doesn't know.

Masbate newsman killed
To add up to the high number of journalists being killed in the country, another newsman from Masbate was gunned down by two motorcycle-riding men in Barangay Marcella, Uson, Masbate on June 12, 2009.
The victim was Antonio A. Castillo, a 45 year-old reporter of Bigwas, a local weekly newspaper who sustained fatal wounds at the back of his body before he died in Mabate Provincial Hospital. According to a New York-based organization, Castillo counted as the fifth journalist slained this year in the Philippines. The motive of the killing is under investigation. Linkage between poverty and the influenza epidemic
The startling rise of H1N1 flu cases to more than 300 in a matter of days in the Philippines makes Filipinos to look into why this happens. The rapid spread of the illness is easy to understand considering how poor the country is, says the Health Action Information Network (HAIN,) non-government organization (NGO.)
Dr. Delen de la Paz, executive director of HAIN believes the poor Filipinos die early because of lack of nutrition which leave them susceptible to the complications of disease. According to the 2006 Family Income and Expenditure Survey, the poorest 1.7 million families in the Philippines try to make both ends meet with an average budget of P18 per day (less than 50 cents/day.)
A case of point is the worsening flu problem together with other diseases endemic in the country. Dr. de la Paz has this to say:
“Bakit ba nagiging pneumonia ang influenza? It starts with viral infection that is supposed to be self-limiting in seven days. Pero dahil walang pambili ng gamot, nagkakaroon ng secondary bacterial infection. Lumalala na ang sakit pero nagtatrabaho pa rin. Dr. de la Paz criticizes the government for its superficial handling of the swine flu epidemic. According to her, the Department of Health (DOH) has advised Filipinos to raise body resistance against infection by having at enough sleep and rest, adequate exercise, control stress, have good hydration and eat nutritious foods. But Dr. de la Paz says, this simply can’t be done if one is poor, underpaid, overworked, hungry and malnourished.
In response to the criticism, Yolanda Oliveros, director of the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control says the DOH tries to address the problem by campaigning for an increase of the agency’s budget from only P11 billion three years ago to today’s P20 billion---funds most needed to expand medical coverage, purchase more medicines and hospital equipment, and improve the delivery of health services in the country.(Photo Credit: Claude Barutel) =0=

Foursome kinky sex: Calvin Klein’s raunchy ad stirs protests
In New York’s Soho district where thousands pass by everyday, Calvin Klein compnay has put up a 50-foot billboard advertising. Two young men, a woman and another man are in explicit pose with strong sexual undertones illumined high above the street.
Semi-nude man and woman are shown kissing. Another man is embracing. With navel exposed and a flat abdomen heaving, a confused guy undresses to the verge of the mon pubis----something that corporate business brings to sell blue jeans fast.
But many people aren’t happy. Parents are bothered by the racy poster which shows the disturbing unnatural sexual message to children. Even if others justify the risqué billboard claiming that “obscenity is on the eyes of the beholder,” Randy Sharp, the director of special projects for the American Family Association, vehemently protests with many others:
"Not only the billboard, but a company -- a corporate giant in America -- feels it appropriate to put a semi-nude photograph in a major billboard in a high-traffic area where tens of thousands of children see this kind of activity going on... If it were going on in the back of a parking lot with steamed windows, they would be arrested, and yet they broadcast it to a whole city."----ABC News (06/17/09, Donaldson James, S)
With liberalism all around, this is the kind of lewd advertising people get. There are reasons to be concerned and concerned citizens are justified to voice their displeasure.

UP Ibalon to Assist in Launch of 31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Month
The whole month of July, the Philippines celebrates the 31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Month. Launching activities shall be held in various venues in Naga City on July 1, 2009-- the first time that NDPR launching events are held outside the National Capital Region.Dr. Josephine Robredo-Bundoc, in-country Director at the Philippines Walking Free clinic and consultant at the UP-PGH Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is this year's Coordinator of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Month. Dr. Bundoc is a native of Naga City and the younger sister of city mayor Jesse Robredo.
The day starts off at Plaza Quezon in downtowm Naga at 7:30 in the morning with "Disability Walk…. towards Independence." Two hundred persons with disabilities from the 14 municipalities of Metro Naga will be “ walking hand in hand “ with their able-bodied fellow Bicolanos as a manifestation of unity and support towards activities, programs and issues towards upliftment, independence and empowerment of the disabled.The walk ends at SM City Naga lobby in Barangay Triangulo where another activity, “ Talents…. Enabled!,“ shall be held. Amputees who have regained their mobility with use of limb prostheses shall showcase their dancing skills;the hearing-impaired shall sing on key; and the the wheelchair-borne will gracefully sashay in tempo.
Medical and Rehabilitation Services, themed, "From Objects to Subjects :Towards Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Society" follow. Free medical services will be provided to the disabled while lay fora pertaining to wellness and disability prevention will be conducted to their caregivers and health providers.The day culminates at the Naga City Civic Center with a lecture from a deaf-blind lawyer from Finland, Atty. TRiku Virtanen, who will talk on the legal, academic and socioeconomic issues of Independent Living ,Human Rights and full Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.

UP Ibalon with Walk Free Project in Naga City
In the run-off to the 31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPAR) Month in July Dr. Josephine Robredo-Bundoc and company from the Walk Free Project and Physicians for Peace distributed and attached pre-fitted limb prostheses to amputees in Naga City.The half-day event took place at the Naga City Civic Center last weekend.
Prior to actual attachment of the prosthetic devices to the beneficiaries, lectures were held, aimed at people giving care and assistance to the disabled. The audience consisted mostly of Barangay Health Workers (now called Health Educators) from various Barangays of Naga and companions of the recipients. The amputees received personalized instructions on how to live with their artificial limbs and gadgets.
With artificial limbs in place, the amputees later took time to show off what they can do when they are able to walk again. Initially learning to walk around in flat surface, they later walked unassisted up and down the stairs. Surprsingly, some recipients could instantly twist and and turn to the tune of the Cha-cha-cha.
One amputee who used to earn a living driving a tricycle before he lost his right leg was a happy man as he pedalled his vehicle around the compound with lone unforgetable passenger, a lady anchorwoman from a local TV network who gave him the feature interview of his life.
This activity was a follow through of the free wheel chair distribution project of the Physicians for Peace early in February this year. In the said activity, Filipino-American Dr. Juan Montero, head of the international charity foundation, was the guest of honor and speaker. As a side activity, the prospective amputee recipients had been evaluated, examined and measured.
Eight million Filipinos are disabled, 2 million Filipinos cannot walk and 1 million are amputees. The Walk Free Project, whose vision is "functional return to all walks of life," aims to do something about the grim statistics.
In Naga City the Project's partners include UP Ibalon Bicol,Kapisanan ng Sangguniang Barangay Kagawad (KSBK) Naga City chapter, and the City Government of Naga.
"Pamanhikan" ushers in the wedding bells of Sen. Mar Roxas and Korina Sanchez
In the age-old tradition of a Filipino marriage, Senator Manual Roxas and his would-be bride TV news anchor Korina Sanchez feted their respective families in a “pamanhikan,” a especial party prepared to honor the bride’s family capped with the groom’s public proposal of marriage.
After the acceptance of the proposal, the groom brought the elders of his family to meet the bride’s relatives in a happy feast of poems, songs, food, and dancing. It was supposed to be an occasion to discuss the arrangments of the coming wedding itself---the budget, number of guests, sponsors, place of ceremony and reception among other concerns.
For Mar and Korina, this pre-union Filipino custom was held on the night of June 14, 2009 in the beautiful home of the bride in Paranaque, Metro Manila. The gathering brought together the celebrities of the Araneta-Roxas clan and the brothers, nieces, uncles, aunts and relatives of the Sanchezes’ side. Susan Boyle returns to the stage
Susan Boyle, the 48 year-old phenomenal singer who came out second in the latest Britain Got Talent contest returned to sing on stage to the glee of her admiring fans. The shy, emotionally-fragile Scottish songstress who turned her fortune around by aspiring to be like the musicale theatre thespian Elaine Page was treated in a hospital for physical and emotional exhaustion after the contest ended.
According to her publicist, Boyle will join the world concert tour of contest winners in spite of the pressure she endures for her unexpected fame. In a performance last Monday, June 15, 2009, Ms. Boyle sang and received a rousing applause--- a standing ovation from a huge audience of admirers.
Fans from all over the world had been waiting for the release of her album which could come 6 months from now. A You Tube video showed her sang as an underdog which qualified her for the finals--- an astounding internet viewership to hear her soaring voice and fan adulation ensued, exceeding 100 million hits in less than two months.

California inches close to bankruptcy
Affected by the biggest recession gripping the country, the state of California has failed to come up with a budget, bringing the golden state near financial insolvency. The state is spending like crazy more than it can generate income. Government revenue is down by 27%. Business has been slow forcing companies to down-size or stop operation.
If no budget is agreed upon, the state is expected to run out of money by the end of July.
“It will run out of cash within weeks if it does not balance its books, leaving it little option but to postpone a variety of payments, according to State Controller John Chiang, who estimated last week that California was "less than 50 days away from a meltdown of state government."---Reuters (06/15/09, Christie, J; Gevirtz, L.)
California's income has dwindled with rising joblessness rate of 11% and unchecked housing crisis making it hard to close the budget gap of about $24 billion. One option is to cut spending --- the curtailment of entitlements and welfare programs including health insurance.
Budget cuts may be needed by putting teachers, firefighters and police officers out of work and stopping medical-care services. More taxes could be levelled on the residents to generate income. Protests against Iran’s contested election continue
Riots against the alleged fraudulent landslide re-election of hardliner Pres. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad grew in the streets of Tehran. Thousands of irate Iranians clashed with the police injuring many and killing at least one person in the largest protest since 1979.
Droves of pro-democracy forces and opposition activists loyal to rival candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi continued to vent anger to the rigging of the election. It prompted supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who was originally supportive of the election result to order an investigation into the alleged voter anomalies.
World leaders expressed concern over the continued chaos in the streets which have ramifications to the stalled diplomatic overtures to have Iran abandon its nuclear program.
While evaluating the suspected landslide win of Ahmadinejad, Pres. Barack Obama said it’s up for the Iranians to choose their leaders. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declared support to look into the contested presidential election. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband voiced "serious concern" while French President Nicolas Sarkozy expressed worry over Iran’s political situation.
