CNN chooses Efren Penaflorida as "2009 Hero of the Year"

In an acceptance speech at the Kodak Theatre in Holliywood, teacher Efren Penaflorida spoke of serving others above oneself to be happy. He was tops in a field of 10 finalists honored by “CNN’s Heroes: An All Star Tribute,,” an annual recognition of international news organizations of people doing selfless acts for the benefit of humanity.

The first Filipino to receive such an award, 29 year-old Penaflorida was selected and voted by 14 judges out of 10 nominees chosen from 9,000 candidates worldwide this year. Among the judges were Gen. Colin Powell, movie actress and TV personality Whoopie Goldberg, and singer Elton John.

A son of a tricycle driver and a laundress, Efren was given the tribute for his work in “Kariton Klasrum,” a teaching program on pushcart that brought the learning of math, science and English into the street for impoverished children in Cavite.

The young mentor who almost dropped out of school because of poverty received a $100,000 prize for his work in the Dynamic Teen Company (DTC,) a volunteer youth organization which conducts the learning program.

In its inception, the DTC relied on the sale of discarded bottles and newpapers to support the pushcart classroom which had inspired others to do the same. Youth groups approached the organization so they can implement the same program to their communities. With the new direction of DTC, Peñaflorida said he will continue to give weekly lessons to the poor using the money in his winning. He encouraged others to contribute time and assist those in need. Lou Dobbs resigns from CNN

CNN anchorman Lou Dobbs announced his decision to leave the cable network to seek new opportunities in furthering his advocacy on important issues of America. The long-time news TV personality started as a financial journalist. He later became an opinionated thinking man who informed and suggested solutions to the pressing issues for his viewers.

For many years he had been doing his advocacy work tackling topics which covered the economy, globalization, Afghanistan-Iraq war, healthcare, climate change, social security, capitalism, immigration, unemployment, education, and lack of public representation in Washington.

Dobbs had been a strident critic of illegal immigration which angered groups like Presente.org and BastaDobbs.com, online Hispanic organizations which campaign for his removal from CNN.

“CNN President Jon Klein in a statement hailed Dobbs' "appetite for big ideas, the megawatt smile and larger than life presence he brought to our newsroom."

"With characteristic forthrightness, Lou has now decided to carry the banner of advocacy journalism elsewhere," Klein said. "We respect his decision." ---AP/Huffington Post (11/11/09)

In his farewell appearance on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, Dobbs promised to be relentless in his pursuit for truth and deal with issues by focusing on solving problems analytically--- rather by be guided by partisanship and ideology. He committed himself to positively contribute to the understanding of the pressing issues of the day. In due time he will inform the public of his next step after his service in CNN. Barack Obama: Elected First Afro-American US President

There will be no long night in the US elections 2008. As soon as the polls in California and other western states closed at 11 PM eastern time and without waiting for the initial results from the area, Wolf Blitzer of CNN projects that Barack Obama has garnered enough electoral votes and called the race. Barack Obama becomes the first Afro-American elected president of the United States.

CNN's announcement was greeted by emotional cheers by a sea of Obama supporters at Grant Park Chicago. A crowd of 4000 students from a nearby university, rushed to the gate of the White House cheering for Obama while demanding immediate eviction of President George W. Bush. Cheering crowds were also noted in Wall Street and Dr. Martin Luther King's church in Atlanta.

The world too rejoices. As far as Obama's root country of Kenya, huge crowds celebrate.

Shortly after, John McCain delivered his concession speech before teary-eyed supporters and promises support for an Obama presidency. A couple of times, McCain had to control boos from disappointed supporters. McCain 's "extraordinarily gracious" words after running a bitter, often venomous, campaign is now a footnote to history.

Obama's victory is self-healing for America. After electing the like of George Bush twice, America fights back by choosing a leader who promises to transform not only America but the world as well. It is classic battle between message of hope and change on one hand and experience on the other. It is also a repudiation of negative campaign tactics, personal attacks, stunts and gimmicks. It is also a triumph of ethical journalism over propagandist media like the FoxNews and News Corp. Millions of bloggers in the Web proved effective in flagging down lies and falsehoods. Incidentally, McCain's loss is the fifth time that American voters refused to elect a decorated war hero to the presidency. This is also the first time that an anti-war candidate wins the US Presidency while America is at war. It is expected that under Obama's leadership, America will self-correct previous mistakes and failures.

The Obama-McCain race is for the ages. It is the stuff that songs, poetry and epics celebrating the triumph of the good guy who takes the high road are made of. Americans and non-Americans will certainly remember where they are on this historic moment. The whole world embraces Barack Obama and see him as the leader of the world. A British news headline even calls Obama's victory. " one giant leap for mankind," a direct quote from John F. Kennedy referring to the first human landing in the moon in 1969.
