He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.”

5 killed in Cotabato blast

Part of the bombings that caused renewed fear in various parts of Southern Philippines is the explosion which occurred on Sunday, July 5, 2009 rocking the nearby Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Cotabato, Mindanao.

A bomb detonated in a store close to the church claimed the life of 5 people and wounding about 45. The explosion which prompted people to flee inside the church coincided the morning mass that was being celebrated by Archbishop Orlando Quevedo.

“The bombing occurred 14 hours after an explosion rocked Barangay Poblacion in Datu Piang town in Maguindanao province, wounding three civilians.” Inquirer (07/06/09, 2009, Uy, J.)

No one accepted any responsibility for the blasts that Vatican's pontiff Pope Benedict XVI condemned. The holy father said nothing good could be achieved by hate and acts of violence. Col. Jonathan Ponce, spokesperson of the 6th Infantry Division of the military suspected the spate of treaths and bombing are workings of the militant elements of the MILF. Libmanan raised as 57th diocese

On March 25, 2009, Libmanan in Camarines Sur had been established as the 57th diocese of the Philippines. According to Most Rev. Msgr. Jose R. Rojas, Jr., the declaration by the Vatican coincided with the feast of the Annunciation, making Libmanan the 5th diocese in the Archdiocese of Caceres.

The Canonical Erection of the Diocese of Libmanan is scheduled on June 19, 2009 to be held at Cathedral of St. James the Apostle, Libmanan, Camarines Sur with Naga Metropolitan Archibishop Msgr. Leonardo Legaspi presiding.

Msgr. Rojas is the first bishop of the newly created diocese over which he supervises 36 priests. Before its elevation, Libmanan became a prelature through a decree by then Pope John Paul II with 16 parishes in towns of Sipocot, Cabusao, Ragay, Del Gallego, Lupi, Libmanan, Pasacao, Pamaplona, San Fernando , Milaor, and Minalabac. Communion by hand makes sense against the spread of H1N1 virus

The advice of Manila Archibishop Gaudencio Cardinal Santos to temporarily stop the custom of hand-to-mouth contact at the time of communion during mass will certainly help avoid the easy transmission of the flu virus in the community. Coupled with avoidance of hand contact during a religious service, this is certainly helpful as swine virus infection in the country jumped to 33 on Saturday, June 6, 2009.

Obviously, as more people get infected, the chance of a widespread influenza is greater. The public must appreciate the effort taken by health and religious authorities to contain the disease, hence the recommendation of frequent hand-washing, avoidance of crowds, the postponement of school opening from June 8 to June 15, the quarantine of those stricken with the disease, and the active educational campaign on prevention. It’s the civic duty of every Filipino to help stop the transmission of the illness. (Photo Credit: gems) =0=

SWINE FLU UPDATE:

June 8, 2009. The Department of Health headed by Dr. Francisco Duque III reported additional cases of H1N1 flu which totalled to 46 during the weekend.
