As the new typhoon Santi heads for Luzon and raises storm signals number 3 in many provinces in Bicol and Metro Manila, the Bicolandia Association of Eastern Seaboard (BAES,) will hold its “Dance for a Cause” this coming Sunday, November 1, 2009 between 5 to 10 PM at the Our Lady of Victories Auditorium at Ege Avenue, in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Typhoon Ondoy and the Manila Flood



















Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo admitted that the government is helpless in answering the needs of the victims of the massive flood brought by Typhoon Ondoy. Hundreds of hapless Filipinos drowned and thousands had to be evacuated to emergency shelters. Others had to wade through muddy streets that posed myriad dangers to their health. The president could only appeal to international donors to help the city that was 80%submerged at the height of heavy rains.

Congestion of about 10 million people in an urban setting, squatting, inadequate sewer drainage, clogged waterways, silted rivers, and lack of disaster preparedness were among the factors that aggravated the misery of the people. The clean-up and rehabilitation could be staggering.

The calamity fund for the nation was reported to have been depleted as soon as the typhoon season started. No one on the top leadership thought this was an urgent priority. Our national leaders as usual, had been distracted by politics----the slow prosecution of the Dacer-Corbito murder case involving warring national political figures and the fielding of candidates for the May 2010 election. =0=

PostHeaderIcon US-based Bicolana Gears Up to Augment Aid to Albay Typhoon Victims

After Typhoons Reming and Milenyo in 2006, Albay province got stuck in continuing calamity. Photos by Dan Daz we posted earlier in this blog show just the lighter side, almost artistic side, of the devastation. We know that the count of victims continue to rise because even with just heavy rains, minus the typhoon, thousands continue to be mass-evacuated in seemingly regular basis. And there is no end to miseries in sight. From America, Divinia Nolasco Ries, who hails from Guinobatan, Albay, sent this encouraging e-mail:

Hey Mickey, this is Vines (Nolasco-Ries) from Indiana, Ibalon batch 73. Pls give my best to Mac Pavia.

I have a favor to ask. I raised a small amount of money for Albay's typhoon victims through our local Michiana Fil-Am Assoc (FAAM) dito sa Northern Indiana. I was thinking of raising more money to help build toilets sa areas na nagrabe ng typhoon but I got busy. For now, could you, Mac Pavia and Edna give me an idea kung ano ang most important need relating to the typhoon damages. Start with a small project.
