Naga City Rotarians donate for the Center for the Blind
Housed in the Raul Roco Library, the Center for the Blind in Naga City is the recipient of charitable donations from the Rotary Club of Naga-Camarines Sur and the Rotary International District 3820.
Benefactor Rotarian Jose “Chingsan” Ranola and fellow local Rotarians give away computers and equipment to the center set up for the benefit of those with eye-sight impairment.
Patronized by mostly students, the facilities help the visually challenged in their studies and researches. The center offers a comprehensive training and education for the blind.
Adding to the facilities were computers given by the family of city mayor Jesse Robredo. The donation beefed up existing computer and IT facilities in the center ---some solicited from other organizations and private individuals. (Photo Credit: localcville) =0=

Anthony Matthew Martires wins in Southern California Ballroom Competition
A young Phil-Am has brought pride and honor at the Southern California Ballroom Competition held at Castaways in Burbank this year.
Anthony Matthew Martires (center), 11 years old, bagged the Top Male Performer during the competition. In a dazzling performance, he won 1st Places for all 4 entries of dancing including the Tango, Waltz, Cha-cha and Rumba with dance teacher Hadas Fisher (right). A weather forecasting center in Naga College Foundation helps Camarines Sur residents
The Typhoon Preparedness Center (TPC) was established six months ago in the Naga College Foundation. Headed by David Michael Padua, a UP geography graduate residing in Naga City, the center had been a source of information about the weather.
Functioning like the country’s Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA,) the national weather adviser and forecaster, TPC had been giving local weather tips to Camarines Sur, a Bicol province known for its high frequency of storms. During Typhoon Santi, the center issued weather forecasting advisories every three hours in their website: Typhoon2000.com
Relying on the data from foreign weather agencies, the center shares supplemental weather information locally alerting the public and the government when foul weather is coming. In addition, Padua and his assistants organize seminars to educate students, teachers, government officials and the laymen on the fundamentals of early warnings during a weather disturbance.
It is a big help that TPC is able to give valuable news about incoming typhoons, thus helping people in the area to get ready. The NCF-sponsored weather center is trying to get the cooperation of the media to help spread their information. Clash between Penafrancia tradition & the secular festivities of Naga City government
With the backing of the Archdiocese of Caceres and the Roman Catholic clergy, religious groups of Naga City complained to the Naga City government for reneging on a bilateral agreement to ban activities that didn’t reflect the faith-based observance of the Penafrancia fiesta. In part, the letter sent by the laity to City Mayor Jesse Robredo read:
“We are disappointed and dismayed when we saw the calendar of activities prepared by the city government of Naga published in its widely distributed Viva Naga, Viva Bicolandia pamphlet. Viva Naga and Viva Bicolandia Festival include activities that have been banned within the novena on moral grounds. In the joint statement, it is very clear that pageants and beer plazas should not be held within the period of the novena.”---Vox Bicol (09/13/09)
The letter was sent by concerned citizens representing groups like the Archdiocesan Council of the Laity, Apostleship of Prayer, Our Lady of Peñafrancia Association, Holy Name Society, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Mother Butlers' Guild, Parish Renewal Experience (PREX), Couples of Christ, Pastoral Council of Bagumbayan Sur, Knights of Columbus, Children of Mary, and Visita Domiciliaria among others, airing their disapproval to government-sponsored revelries like gay beauty pageants, street parties, and drinking fests.

Erlinda E. Bitancur, 74 of Naga City & Sorsogon
UP Ibalon-Bicol expresses its heartfelt condolence to the family of Erlinda Escalante Bitancur, 74, originally from Sorsogon and resident of Ateneo Avenue, Naga City.
Herlin, as she was fondly called, died on Sunday August 23, 2009. After a solemn concelebrated mass officiated by Fr. Bitancur and Fr. Barela, her mortal remains were interred at the Eternal Gardens Memorial Park in Naga City on August 27, 2009 at 10 AM. She was survived by her only daughter, Mrs. Tuy of LTO (Photo Credit: gsb_viva)

Naga raid yields shabu valued at P3.4 million
After two months of careful surveillance, a raid of a house in San Felipe, Naga City yielded shabu worth approximately P3.4 million. 460 grams of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) together with money amounting to P15,000 was seized from the Ali Diamaodin, Diomair Diamaodin, and Juhaiver Diamaodin, both from Marawi City, Mindanao. BACS Meet revival in Naga City
Those who studied in Catholic school about 50 years ago in Bicol cannot forget the Bicol Association of Catholic Schools (BACS) meet----a dazzling sports and socio-cultural event that brought schools, students, teachers and parents in a merry celebration of Catholic education. In a week, activities that included parades, academic contests, and sports were held to instill pride, competitiveness, and teamwork among the young.
For reasons that include budget constraints, BACS Meet was discontinued. But through the years, many clamored for its restoration. After 30 years, Bicol Mail reported the event’s come back on August 13-15, 2009 in Naga City under the leadership of the new BACS president, Fr. Joel E. Tabora, SJ of the Ateneo de Naga University.
“More than a thousand college, elementary and high school students from the six catholic educational associations of Virac, Caceres and Libmanan, Daet, Libmanan, Sorsogon and Masbate are expected to take part in this biennial event. “---Bicol Mail (08/07/09)

Which virus: seasonal flu or H1N1 virus?
The flu as reported by the Naga City Health Office (Bicol Mail, 07/16/09) could well indeed be cases of seasonal flu---the viral illness that makes rounds this year. However, I wonder if this flu described by Health officer Dr. Vito Borja is apart from the H1N1 which is the subject of concern, study and containment at this time.
It’s hard to differentiate between the seasonal and swine flu. The genomic features and clinical manifestations of both influenza viruses have points of overlaps. Therefore, without diagnostic confirmation as done in the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Manila, no one will ever know for sure what the city is dealing with.
I believe residents of Naga and other towns including health care workers are eager to learn if confirmatory tests are done. Whichever virus may affect the population, greater surveillance is important to put into action the ways to prevent and control the spread of the disease.
The H1N1 flu, though generally benign and self-limiting, has the potential to mutate and transform into a vicious resistant disease. It poses health risks to the people like the seasonal flu. (Photo Credit: CDC) =0=

Exemplary Fil-Am Leadership: The shining civic spirit in Angelita L. Pena

Angelita de Leon-Pena’s job experience comes from years of sterling service in the corporate world and from human interactions that count. For many years she has worked as the assistant vice-president of New York Mellon Bank after serving in Corporate Trust Department of US Bank, the State Street Bank, Citibank (NY,) and the Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Naga City, Philippines.
The affable lady that I know since our days in Naga City has surely greater knowledge than what she knows about the financial health of America. She is now the incoming president of the Bicol National Association of America (BNAA,) a coalition of organizations of Bicolanos across the United States.
For many Bicolanos from California to New York, from Boston to Miami, from Hawaii to Alaska to Georgia these milestones are miniscule compared to Lita's desire, like her ardent friends in BNAA and the Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotees Asssociation (OLPDA) to serve the community.
More than the drudgery of plain living away from native Bicol, it is her passion to come up with something magnanimous for Filipinos in the enlarging diaspora. Her lively wit and sophistication are never dull. She is a fountain of inspiration---especially when she starts asking some gritty questions like, “How can we unite all Bicolanos in America? What can we do to help the people of the Philippines?”
Filipino-Americans (Fil-Ams) know the next president of the BNAA has her views. When she deals with issues of utmost importance, she stirs the pot with rationality and wisdom. As her impeccable credentials show, the beneficient angel from Naga does her civics well.
Lita is busy laying the ground work to host a reunion which will draw Bicolanos to the Northeast in a July 17-19, 2009 convention. The group’s reunion next month will tie-up bonds, recharge friendships, and drum up fresh humanitarian projects for the organization. With fellow-Bicolanos working with her, she will gather kababayans, Fil-Ams, their friends, and families from all over America and elsewhere for a tastefully planned merry get-together.
Would you believe you’re invited? Or would you believe we're all invited? BNAA, like OLPDA, is a welcoming group ready to open its arms. In a giveaway expression of real hospitality, the reunion is open to as many Fil-Ams as possible particularly Bicolanos.
In 2002, Lita walked as the grand marshal of the Philippine Day Organizing Committee in Passaic, NJ. Shunning self-importance, she worked hard as a board member in the well-known Philippine Independence Day Committee (PIDC) of New York City. With unrelenting duties at home and in the community, she proved to be an dedicated adviser of the Bicolandia National Association of America of the Eastern Seaboard, USA (BNAA-Eastern Seaboard) and OLPDA.
The leader with a beaming persona gave away precious time in 2003 to be the overall chairwoman of the Philippine American Friendship Committee, Inc. As two-term president of the Greenville Fil-Am Bowling League and past board of director & vice-president of the Folklorico Dance Company of New York, she organized OLPDA of the Tri-State Area in the early 1990’s which encouraged faith-based veneration of Ina in America, the mother-patroness of the Bicol Region.
For all the sacrifices she endured, Lita didn’t lack the admiration of her kababayans who trust her ability. The Philippine New York Jaycees gave her the outstanding community leadership award in 2003. Along with Peng, her devoted husband, she was named by the New Jersey Parent Foundation as the 2000 Parent of the Year---a coveted distinction that brought sparks of inspiration to family-oriented souls across races and backgrounds.
As a keynote speaker, in 2002, the Bicol Canada, Inc, (Etobicoke, Canada) presented Lita a certificate of appreciation for her selfless service to Bicolanos as she helped improve the quality of life in Jersey City and in the Bicol Region.
A dynamic lady leader who kindly encouraged Filipinos to embark on community undertakings, Lita was given the Women’s Achiever’s Award by Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and by the Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League of Jersey City. She received a certificate of appreciation from the mayor citing her outstanding commitment and continuous support for the Filipino American Veterans Organization of New Jersey. Given a service award in 2007, she was likewise cited for brilliant leadership and dedication by the BNAA-Eastern Seaboard.
Lita graduated from the Colegio de Sta. Isabel High School in Naga City. She finished her college education at the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) in Manila, Philippines where she earned her accounting and business administration degree.
Married to Eufronio Pena of Naga City, she is a proud and loving mom of three wonderful children--- Eduardo, married to Marsha Rafanan, Ysadora, married to Alan Clarin and Eric, married to Ivy Damian. Lita and Peng, are happy grandparents to Alexa, Jonah, Aivery, Drew and Jaxsen. Angelita de Leon-Pena’s job experience comes from years of sterling service in the corporate world and from human interactions that count. For many years she has worked as the assistant vice-president of New York Mellon Bank after serving in Corporate Trust Department of US Bank, the State Street Bank, Citibank (NY,) and the Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Naga City, Philippines.
The affable lady that I know since our days in Naga City has surely greater knowledge than what she knows about the financial health of America. She is now the incoming president of the Bicol National Association of America (BNAA,) a coalition of organizations of Bicolanos across the United States.
For many Bicolanos from California to New York, from Boston to Miami, from Hawaii to Alaska to Georgia these milestones are miniscule compared to Lita's desire, like her ardent friends in BNAA and the Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotees Asssociation (OLPDA) to serve the community.
More than the drudgery of plain living away from native Bicol, it is her passion to come up with something magnanimous for Filipinos in the enlarging diaspora. Her lively wit and sophistication are never dull. She is a fountain of inspiration---especially when she starts asking some gritty questions like, “How can we unite all Bicolanos in America? What can we do to help the people of the Philippines?”
Filipino-Americans (Fil-Ams) know the next president of the BNAA has her views. When she deals with issues of utmost importance, she stirs the pot with rationality and wisdom. As her impeccable credentials show, the beneficient angel from Naga does her civics well.
Lita is busy laying the ground work to host a reunion which will draw Bicolanos to the Northeast in a July 17-19, 2009 convention. The group’s reunion next month will tie-up bonds, recharge friendships, and drum up fresh humanitarian projects for the organization. With fellow-Bicolanos working with her, she will gather kababayans, Fil-Ams, their friends, and families from all over America and elsewhere for a tastefully planned merry get-together.
Would you believe you’re invited? Or would you believe we're all invited? BNAA, like OLPDA, is a welcoming group ready to open its arms. In a giveaway expression of real hospitality, the reunion is open to as many Fil-Ams as possible particularly Bicolanos.
In 2002, Lita walked as the grand marshal of the Philippine Day Organizing Committee in Passaic, NJ. Shunning self-importance, she worked hard as a board member in the well-known Philippine Independence Day Committee (PIDC) of New York City. With unrelenting duties at home and in the community, she proved to be an dedicated adviser of the Bicolandia National Association of America of the Eastern Seaboard, USA (BNAA-Eastern Seaboard) and OLPDA.

UP Ibalon to Assist in Launch of 31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Month
The whole month of July, the Philippines celebrates the 31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Month. Launching activities shall be held in various venues in Naga City on July 1, 2009-- the first time that NDPR launching events are held outside the National Capital Region.Dr. Josephine Robredo-Bundoc, in-country Director at the Philippines Walking Free clinic and consultant at the UP-PGH Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is this year's Coordinator of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Month. Dr. Bundoc is a native of Naga City and the younger sister of city mayor Jesse Robredo.
The day starts off at Plaza Quezon in downtowm Naga at 7:30 in the morning with "Disability Walk…. towards Independence." Two hundred persons with disabilities from the 14 municipalities of Metro Naga will be “ walking hand in hand “ with their able-bodied fellow Bicolanos as a manifestation of unity and support towards activities, programs and issues towards upliftment, independence and empowerment of the disabled.The walk ends at SM City Naga lobby in Barangay Triangulo where another activity, “ Talents…. Enabled!,“ shall be held. Amputees who have regained their mobility with use of limb prostheses shall showcase their dancing skills;the hearing-impaired shall sing on key; and the the wheelchair-borne will gracefully sashay in tempo.
Medical and Rehabilitation Services, themed, "From Objects to Subjects :Towards Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Society" follow. Free medical services will be provided to the disabled while lay fora pertaining to wellness and disability prevention will be conducted to their caregivers and health providers.The day culminates at the Naga City Civic Center with a lecture from a deaf-blind lawyer from Finland, Atty. TRiku Virtanen, who will talk on the legal, academic and socioeconomic issues of Independent Living ,Human Rights and full Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.

UP Ibalon with Walk Free Project in Naga City
In the run-off to the 31st National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPAR) Month in July Dr. Josephine Robredo-Bundoc and company from the Walk Free Project and Physicians for Peace distributed and attached pre-fitted limb prostheses to amputees in Naga City.The half-day event took place at the Naga City Civic Center last weekend.
Prior to actual attachment of the prosthetic devices to the beneficiaries, lectures were held, aimed at people giving care and assistance to the disabled. The audience consisted mostly of Barangay Health Workers (now called Health Educators) from various Barangays of Naga and companions of the recipients. The amputees received personalized instructions on how to live with their artificial limbs and gadgets.
With artificial limbs in place, the amputees later took time to show off what they can do when they are able to walk again. Initially learning to walk around in flat surface, they later walked unassisted up and down the stairs. Surprsingly, some recipients could instantly twist and and turn to the tune of the Cha-cha-cha.
One amputee who used to earn a living driving a tricycle before he lost his right leg was a happy man as he pedalled his vehicle around the compound with lone unforgetable passenger, a lady anchorwoman from a local TV network who gave him the feature interview of his life.
This activity was a follow through of the free wheel chair distribution project of the Physicians for Peace early in February this year. In the said activity, Filipino-American Dr. Juan Montero, head of the international charity foundation, was the guest of honor and speaker. As a side activity, the prospective amputee recipients had been evaluated, examined and measured.
Eight million Filipinos are disabled, 2 million Filipinos cannot walk and 1 million are amputees. The Walk Free Project, whose vision is "functional return to all walks of life," aims to do something about the grim statistics.
In Naga City the Project's partners include UP Ibalon Bicol,Kapisanan ng Sangguniang Barangay Kagawad (KSBK) Naga City chapter, and the City Government of Naga.
“Jueteng” thrives well in Camarines Sur
In an amazing revelation, an informer disguised as "Rod" revealed that at least P3.8 million is collected daily from “jueteng, ” the illegal gambling which operates in at least 31 towns in Camarines Sur. Jueteng sucks in poor man’s money from bettors who expect to win in the outlawed numbers game.
Protected by politicians and police officers in the area for at least 3 years now, Rod who is ready to be a whistleblower, claimed P1 million comes from the first district, P1 million from the second district, P700,000 from the third district, and P960,000 from the fourth district. The amounts included daily collections from the cities of Naga (second district) and Iriga (fourth district), he added. At least P280,000 is being collected daily from the capital town of Pili (second district) These amounts, Rod claimed, would be used to finance the upcoming 2010 presidential election. ----PDI (06/04/09, Soltes JC, Davila, JR; Cardinoza, G)
If true, this gambling operation is consistent to the endemic graft and corruption that goes from the provinces reaching up to the national level. Local and international groups have been pointing the unlawful practice to the government which stifles the progress of the country. Obituary: Bella F. Karingal of Naga City & Baao, Camarines Sur
Bella F, Karingal, 74, was a devoted daughter of the late Angustia Fajardo and Mariano Karingal of Dayangdang Naga City and Baao, Camarines Sur. Loving sister of Anita, Gloria, Merle, Juanito (deceased) and Ramon, she died in peace after a lingering illness.
Her remains lie in Naga's Funeraria Imperial. After a mass celebrating her life, Bella will be interred at the Penafrancia Cemetery in Naga City on Thursday, May 14, 2009.
