A young Phil-Am has brought pride and honor at the Southern California Ballroom Competition held at Castaways in Burbank this year.

Anthony Matthew Martires (center), 11 years old, bagged the Top Male Performer during the competition. In a dazzling performance, he won 1st Places for all 4 entries of dancing including the Tango, Waltz, Cha-cha and Rumba with dance teacher Hadas Fisher (right). "More than 50 male and female students from 5 dance studios in Southern California; Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties participated in the said contest. Matthew was the youngest contestant...

"The 7th grader from St. Ignatius de Loyola School in Pasadena not only joins dance competitions, he also gets invited to perform in community ballroom blitzes like the one in Alex Theater in Glendale which was a production of Christian Perry, renowned choreographer for “Dancing with the Stars” and in December ’08 Matthew was part of the dance ensemble that performed in the opening act of “Dancing with the Stars on Tour” at the Staples Center [home of the LA Lakers] in Los Angeles." ---Bicol Mail (11/05/09, Imperial, S.)

The talented son of Tony and Yeye Martires of Baao, Camarines Sur and California started dancing lessons with his mom Yeye at Arthur Murray Dance School in Pasadena at age 9. PostHeaderIcon Mica Bernas presents her dazzling choreography with the Yangtze Repertory Theatre

On a chilly evening last Saturday, September 26, 2009, I had the chance to see the presentation of the Yangtze Repertory Theatre entitled “Traces Variations In A Foreign Land #10” in Flushing Town Hall Auditorium in Queens, New York. The dramatic presentation was the brainchild of young talented multiracial choreographers David Chien Hui Shen, Mica Bernas, Kyla Barkin and Aaron Selissen.

Remarkable was Mica Bernas (see center lady in the picture) who came from the Philippines. Her impressive input showcased part of the culture she brought from Asia’s emerald islands. Complementing the modern innovative dances of the other choreographers, Mica’s presentations were as exuberant as they were agile--- their nuances of movement were so pleasing that I was focused thinking how the young Filipina artist and her companions could come up with those athletic, but graceful dance sequences.

“Mica Bernas was born and raised in Manila, Philippines and started her training at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Dance (CCP) School under the direction of Noordin Jumalon. In 2002, she joined Ballet Philippines (BP), performing and touring with the company as a soloist in works by Alice Reyes, Denisa Reyes, Tony Fabella, William Morgan, Agnes Lugnasin and Agnes Locsin.

She was a representative of the Philippines in ASEAN Arts Festival in Cambodia in 2002 as well as ASEAN production of REALIZING RAMA featuring collaborating artists from ten South East Asian Countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam) in 2003 and 2006.

Since arriving in New York in 2006, she has worked with Max Luna III, Karole Armitage, Connecticut Ballet, Zig Zag Ballet, H.T. Chen and Dancers, Leonides D. Arpon, Marta Renzi and Gallim Dance. She is currently a member of the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company and a founding member of Akin, Amin, Atin, an ensemble, which is committed to developing and presenting contemporary, multicultural works by Filipino contemporary artists. She appeared last fall in Yangtze Rep's "Variations in a Foreign Land IX: Akin. Amin. Atin.," dancing in works by Leonides Arpon.”-----News Blaze.com (09/06/09, Staff, J.)

Reading through Mica’s resume, I could tell how the young lady takes her artistic talent with seriousness, dedication, and passion. I was so proud of her being in New York, just like her parents, Benjamin and Irma Bernas, originally from Baao, Camarines Sur who were beside me during the dazzling presentation. Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotess Assoiation (OLPDA) invites you to a Night of Dancing Western Music at Our Lady of Victories School Auditorium in Ege Avenue, off West Side Avenue in New Jersey City. The event whose proceeds will partly defray the expenses of the association in Ina's honor starts at 5PM and ends at 10 PM on Sunday, August 30, 2009.

The lovely affair is in preparation to the September Penafrancia fiesta being readied by OLPDA for the Northeast Bicolanos on September 11 to 19, 2009. PostHeaderIcon Cebu Inmates Dance to the Tune of MJ’s “Dangerous” as Tribute to the King of Pop

Expressing their continuing facination to their fallen idol, the deceased mega- performer Michael Jackson, inmates of the Cebu Penitentiary who found attention in their group dances, wiggled at the tune of "Dangerous." Clad in black and orange garbs, the dancing inmates added another dimension to their rehabilitation while serving time in jail.

Serving like a “therapy,” dancing has a calming effect on the Filipino prisoners. Their performances after practice have attracted the attention of approving spectators throughout the world. You Tube displayed their hilarious and entertaining presentations which had become popular in the internet.

In their earlier repertoire was Michael Jackson’s famous "Thriller" which brought 10 million hits since it became available in cyberspace. Another was a reenactment of scenes and songs from the movie Sister Act.

The 1,500 inmates thankfully attributed their fame to the phenomenal King of Pop whom they idolize. Boredom and trouble in their jail quarters had been low since they started dancing. (Photo Credit: Huffington Post/ Byron Garcia) =0=
