2.5 million Muslims on a pilgrimage to Mecca
About 2.5 Islamists have arrived in Mecca, Saudi Arabia to participate in the annual pilgrimage amidst fears of swine flu and possibility of stampede. The holy ritual of Muslim believers coming together annually doesn’t come without risks. At least 4 people were reported to have died of H1N1 flu. There were deaths from panicked jostling, pushing, and trampling which marred past observances of the religious tradition.
Three years ago, 364 people died after a stampede broke at the entrance of the crowded Jamarat bridge, east of Mecca. A total of 1,426 pilgrims lost their lives after being trampled on in a fatal stampede in the crowded tunnel in Mina.
To avoid a repeat of tragedies, about 100,000 security men were called to manage the peace and order of the place. Hundreds of cameras were set up to watch the conduct of the religious celebration. An extimated 20,000 healthcare personnel were made available to give medical services to the pilgrims. Fort Hood Muslim Army MD being investigated as a terrorist
Major Nidal Malik Hasan recuperates from the gunshot wounds inflicted to stop him form his shooting rampage at Fort Hood Military Base. The medical army officer is being investigated for terrorism. Operatives are trying to know if he has deep ties with radical groups espousing violence and mayhem in the Western world.
The 39–year old unmarried gunman took the lives of 13 fellow soldiers and injured 30 innocent victims. Relatives and friends pointed to Hasan as a benign peaceful man with no criminal records. But others saw him as a troubled medical professional with religious fanatical views who was upset of being deployed to Afghanistan. The vicious killer shouted “Allahu Akhbar” (God is Great,) a signature battlecry of militant Muslim suicide bombers.
Later inquiries suggested that Hasan was a devout Muslim who talked stridently against the war. He believed Muslims are justified to rise against aggressors like the Americans. Born and raised in Virginia, he went to in Dar-al-Hijrah mosque in Virginia, a worship house led by a radical Muslim preacher said to be a "spiritual adviser" to three of the hijackers who attacked the United States on Sept 11, 2001. Hasan has great respect for Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born Yemeni imam accused of supporting terrorist organisations including Al-Qaeda.
These emerging clues raised the need to dig deeper into Hasan’s background. Exercising political correctness, civilian and military authorities seemed slow and hesitant to explore the terrorist angle, but this needed to change quick to protect America.
Endorsing a thorough investigation, Sen. Joe Lieberman talked of his suspicions that a terrorist link is possible given Hasan’s story. The Obama administration had been criticized for not giving enough focus on the tragedy that befell men and women in the service of the country.
For fear of a backlash among the radical Islamists, authorities preferred to think the attack was a criminal event rather than an attack of a terrorist. Those in denial had the tendency to push key questions under the rug. Part of a feeling of dread and tendency to accommodate, they were dismissive of violent people in the ranks of Muslims. Woman TV journalist gets 60 lashes in Saudi Arabia
A female TV journalist who works with the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC,) was sentenced by a Saudi Court to receive 60 lashes after the company where she is employed is found not to have a license to operate in the Islamic country.
The Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC,) had been a popular television station which showed western-style entertainment programs and talk shows. A TV presentation in LBC which featured a man’s premarital sexual experiences drew outcry from the highly conservative public.
For his revelations, Mazen Abdul-Awad, a divorced father of four, was sentenced to five years in jail and 1,000 lashes. The 22 year old lady journalist said she had nothing do with Abdul-Awad’s sexual confessions, but she refused to contest the verdict against her. ---Reuters (10/24/09, Alsharif, A.)
In Saudi Arabia, judges who serve as religious clerics at the same time and adhere to the strict Wahhabi form of Islam have far-reaching influence and power. They are allowed to rule on legal matters sticking to their personal interpretation of the Islamic law. A sizeable number of their decisions are questionable and deemed arbitrary. US terrorist plots more real than Americans realize
“When police on September 14 searched an apartment in the New York City borough of Queens that Zazi had visited, they told local media they confiscated cell phones and at least nine empty backpacks. The Madrid train bombings that killed 191 people involved backpacks stuffed with explosives that were detonated via cell phones.”----Reuters (09/23/09, Honan, E; Kearney, C.)
The specter of terrorism is reignited anew when in the weekend, in America, three suspected Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorists were arrested hatching a bombing plot that could parallel that one pulled in Madrid in 2004 and London in 2005. The arrests came at a time that world leaders trooped to New York for the 64th annual general assembly in the United Nations headquarters.
Shuttle driver Jajibullah Zazi who admitted training in a bomb making school in Pakistan, an imam, and a 37 year-old Afghan-born Ahmad Wais Afzali were arrested on suspicions of forming a terrorist team in the US mainland. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigators apprehended Zazi in Colorado and found his laptop bearing instructions on making, handling, and detonation of explosives.
An apartment in Queens, New York turned in cell phones and back packs that might be readied for bombing similar to the one that occurred in the subway system in Madrid, Spain killing innocent people.
Pres. George Bush and his military advisers said before that a terrorist attack in the US soil is not a matter of if, but when. Inciting incredulity and falling in deaf ears, the president's warning was echoed by vice-pres. Dick Cheney. These recent arrests surely brought back the same grim warning.
Yet, the liberals in society and civil rights groups have dismissed terrorist warnings as being alarmist. It was easy for them to deny a worst-case scenario that could well occur in the future. With the new arrests, the American people had been reminded anew of their vulnerability.

IAEA now says Iran can produce a nuclear bomb
After years of denying allegations by the United States and other UN-member nations that Iran is pursuing a nuclear program to develop a bomb, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) tasked to monitor the rogue country has admitted that Tehran has the ability to produce a nuclear bomb. nder the shadows, the Islamic country has worked on make a missile system which can bring an atomic warhead. In a confidential report seen by The Associated Pres, IAEA declares the following:
• The IAEA's assessment that Iran worked on developing a chamber inside a ballistic missile capable of housing a warhead payload "that is quite likely to be nuclear."
• That Iran engaged in "probable testing" of explosives commonly used to detonate a nuclear warhead — a method known as a "full-scale hemispherical explosively driven shock system."

The confidential document was what the United States had been referring as a “secret annex” which the IAEA earlier tagged as misinformation. For many months, USA, Israel, France, and other nations have been demanding IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei to release the information.
Early this year, IAEA revealed that Iran had produced more than 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of low-enriched, or fuel-grade, uranium, more than enough to make radioactive uranium for a bomb. It is likely that very soon Iran will be able to install a medium range missile with a nuclear explosive device.
The world wakes up to the grim reality that a system of surveillance like what IAEA does doesn’t work consistently. After years of denials and lies, Iran’s nuclear program, pursued under the very nose of the United Nations, has succeeded this far since the inception of its nuclear program in 1984 during the Islamic revolution. Iran opposition stages protest in a cemetery
Coinciding the 40th day of the death of Neda Agha-Soltan, the martyred Iranian oppositionist killed in a riot on July 20, 2009, protest against the regime was held on Iran’s biggest cemetery. Thousands of reformists gathered in the burial site to pay tribute to Neda and those who died in the riots. They continued their campaign against the heavy-handed leadership of the cleric-dominated Islamic government.
Breaking the government’s order banning public assemblies, the protest movement had become a nationwide fight against the rigged reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the June 12, 2009 voting. Demanding human rights, the oppositionists called for the release of political detainees and called for "Death to the dictator," referring to Amadinejad.
Since the protests began, many were arrested, incarcerated, beaten, and mercilessly killed by the powerful security forces of the current regime. In its unrelenting crack-down against dissent and freedom, the Iranian government announced that trials for arrested “rioters” will on August 1, 2009.
Relatives of those who died complained that authorities forced them to sign documents saying their loved ones died of natural causes, not a result of the brutality of the police. It appears the government will face more dissent from the opposition. Iran proceeds with its nuclear ambition under the noses of UN and USA
The problematic handling of Iran to deter nuclear proliferation has emboldened the Islamic country to proceed with its often-denied plan to produce an atomic bomb. The Ayatollah-led regime tries to stop the UN nuclear agency from increasing its monitoring of its nuclear program.
Reported by AP, according to diplomats, Iran has the potential of testing a bomb in six months---far earlier than what was thought. They say the Islamic country has produced substantial fissile material, about 1,000 kg (2,200 lbs) of low enriched weapons-grade uranium, giving them the capacity to test a bomb similar to what the North Koreans did in their underground test in 2006.
‘International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed Elbaradei has repeatedly warned that his agency cannot guarantee that Iran is not hiding nuclear activities. Iranian nuclear expert David Albright on Friday put the chances that such a secret site exists at "50-50." “---AP (07/17/09, Jahn, G.)
With Iran’s objection, the UN is asking for a step-up surveillance to determining what is truly occurring in Natanz, the site of where expanded uranium enrichment has been going on. As Iran tackles opposition from the homegrown reformist movement, the invitation of Hillary Clinton for the country to go in the negotiation table remains unheeded.
In the meantime, gas-bag Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently appointed Ali Akbar Salehi, a U.S.-educated physicist with a doctorate degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to replace resigned Gholam Reza Aghazadeh as the new vice president and the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.

Religion as a myth, Mother Mary as a nude playboy pin-up girl & a pink Christmas celebration
A provocative placard was placed beside a nativity scene in Olympia, Washington USA which says that religion “hardens hearts and enslaves minds.” Coincident to this month’s feast honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Mexican edition of Playboy magazine printed a nude cover girl with a white veil resembling the Blessed Virgin Mary. In Amsterdam, Netherlands, gays and lesbians slated a pink Christmas, the first this year, depicting the holy Mary and Joseph as homosexuals in a manger scene.
Mockery of religion has become rampant. Antipathy is more common as the holidays heat up. Disrespect and hostility towards Christian moral values are on the rise, especially among those who feel they aren't "included" in the Christmas celebration. Churches, religious groups, and the overwhelming majority of Christians are pitted against misguided seculars and atheists who believe religious faith has no place in society. In their alienation, non-believers seems to be having a foul after-taste of their desolation. It's a far-cry from the the joy and hope true Christians feel at this time of the year.
The small minority of “Scrooges” in US society (fewer than 20% of the public,) wants to change the texture of culture and religion throughout the world. At Christmas time, extremists desiring to remove faith-based traditions are on the move. They have the backing of legal groups, warped government judges, and liberal supporters. This is ironic because the law guarantees the freedom in the exercise of religion (not from religion.) The government is mandated to protect people in their peaceful expressions of faith.
The controversial campaign by liberal radicals and atheists against God seem directed mostly against Jesus believers whose ethical tenet is to work for peace. With the rise of individualism, social alienation, materialism, and decline of ethical moral values, this isn’t surprising. However, the extreme seculars don’t have the balls to mock other religions like Islam. They can only tackle soft targets. For they know,like in the past, their disrespect can draw them into a real quarrel, hopefully, not a bloody one. India’s 911 & the reminder of the ugly nature of terrorism

The gruesome killing spree by militant Islamic radicals in the financial district of India on November 27, 2008 brought a toll of at least 195 dead and more than 300 injured. Many lives were lost senselessly; many homes were broken. After a 60-hour bloody rampage, one could ask if these terrorists could be expected to follow the standards of Western justice and fair play.
Suspected to be Muslim extremists from neighboring Pakistan, the brutal killers left 22 foreigners and 15 Indian security officers among the dead. Their barbarity is their hallmark; their cruelty is incomprehensible.

He supposedly fights to remedy wrongs -- social, religious, national, racial. But for all these problems his only solution is the demolition of the whole structure of society. The question about justice and fair play of terrorists is more significant as Pres. George W. Bush, the leader of the war on terror leaves office. In spite of his gains with America’s allies, many people forget his credit of foiling of reckless radicals who want to bomb US cities as they did with India. Demonized in a greater scale than his shortcomings, Bush still reminds the world of complacency, the evil of terrorism, and the costly war required in stopping it.

Terrorists are determined to strike in a date, time and place of their choosing. They will do it in their own terms. Security and safety can only be achieved if they are vanquished and eradicated. It appears this is a battle that can last longer than the lifetimes of people of the present generation. Changing a warped and immoral ideology takes time especially if linked with radical religious beliefs among people with failing governments and cultures.

There are those who think that the terrorists are reasonable and fair. They believe they can be made to embrace peace and be taught good moral conduct. Yet by choosing violence and seeking the destruction of their enemies (i.e. Israel and USA) how can they be trusted? It’s at this juncture that President-elect Barack Obama thinks deeply on how he’ll deal with cold-bloodied killers whose basic belief is to spread hatred and cause destruction of Western world. It is increasingly clear that those who want to destroy civilization will not stop at causing damage and physical harm. They are bent to inflict suffering, confront the world, until they gain control. “The Republic was not established by cowards; and cowards will not preserve it ... The war on terror isn’t an electoral campaign issue anymore. Rather, it’s a problem that all Americans and their allies have to tackle with undiminished resolve. Obama needs to balance diplomacy, the use of force, pragmatism, and rational judgment. It remains to be seen whether his diplomacy will open a future world order that is peaceful and prosperous.

To expect enemies to abandon their violent agenda in a diplomatic negotiation table is naïve and foolhardy. Not to use force against them when it is necessary may be courting defeat. At least 82 killed & hundreds injured in terror attacks in Mumbai, India
The fire rages in Taj Mahal and Oberoi, the two luxury hotels attacked by terrorists. The dead and wounded are at least 82 and 200 respectively and the numbers are expected to rise. There are reports that about 40 westerners mostly British and Americans are feared to have been seized as hostages by an obscure militant Islamic group called Decca Mujahideen.
It isn’t ascertained how many are stuck in the hotels. The number of hostages and their identities are not known at this time. Six (6) terrorists have been killed so far. The number of those injured may reach 700.
The bloody attacks have been carried out simultaneously in at least 7 different sites including places like the Chhatrapati Shivaji rail station, Leopold restaurant, Cama, Albless, and G.T. Hospitals.David Miliband, Britain’s foreign secretary strongly condemning the violence asserted, "Today's attacks in Mumbai which have claimed many innocent victims remind us, yet again, of the threat we face from violent extremists." Although the motive of the senseless carnage which occurred on Wednesday night on November 26, 2008 isn’t known, the world can just watch in horror the barbarity of terrorist groups who prey on the innocents to gain attention and advance their warped agenda for the world. As of this writing, guns are fired and bombs are detonated without clear end. This violent incident makes the fight against terror unrelenting---ever more real today and in the future.

Halloween Hangover
For most of us, the celebration of Halloween almost always means fun. The tradition of trick-a-treat, witches, kapre, goblins, ti-anak, jack o’ lantern, bonfires, costume parties, horror movies, and parades has become ever more popular. For the most part, the merriment goes without a hitch.
For Alex Woinksi however, this year’s holiday is different. Donning a crown of thorns and a costume to simulate Jesus Christ, the teenager was forced to go home early from the West Brook Middle School Halloween Celebration in Paramus, New Jersey. That's upon the advice of his school principal.
It’s the old familiar question about freedom of expression versus the sensitivity and respect towards religion. Liberal society doesn’t see anything wrong with Jesus being impersonated in a pagan celebration like Halloween.
Many accept to see the holy Messiah reviled. He has been depicted as a frog pinned on the cross, prostitute-lover, a homosexual, and a loser immersed in bottle of urine, His mother Mary was "artistically" painted with horse dung---far outrageous than Woinski’s bland JC costume. Liberals and free thinkers justify these indignities as legitimate artsy self-expressions in synch with democratic rights in a modern society.
But those who don’t agree ask about respect over religious beliefs. They know some members of society recklessly push aside sensibility. Can anyone forget the rampage of killings provoked by depicting prophet Mohammed in cartoons published in a Danish newspaper? Does anyone notice how westerners are cowed to repeat the same “sacrilege” towards Islam?
The liberal-secularist point of view seems to play here again. About 75% of respondents in an informal AOL online survey opined it was OK for Woinski to wear the Jesus attire. Many didn’t believe that the costume was offensive to some students. The double-standard people have towards religion and the inconsistency of exercising political correctness make what is right or wrong, relative and contentious. Iran's Ahmadinejad & the Impotence of the United Nations
Side by side with the financial crisis rocking America, the threat of terrorism showed its ugly head when Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, made a controversial speech in the United Nations (UN) in New York City today September 23, 2008, highlighting the impotence and hypocrisy of current world politics. His allusion to a pessimistic outlook of America is as though the United States is alone in its march towards a rough ride into the future. Faced with a global economy, exploding population, dwindling resources, differing value judgments and relativist view of truth, America shares its problems with everybody. This is what is happening in the current economic crisis. The financial flu sweeping the United States is threatening to be a world pandemic of economic and political woes whose end result for the world is scary to imagine.
Wishing bad things to happen for America isn't good to the peace and stability of its global neighbors. Just as the full-blown effects of the present US economic downturn are starting to be felt, the world waits on the edge; nobody knows how it will end. But even without this, Iran has been suffering under the current Islamic regime of Ahmadinejad. Outside the UN headquarters, he is met by protests and jeers by those who disagree with him.
The United Nations (UN) has been inutile in convincing Iran to stop its nuclear program. Effective in fighting certain world problems, UN is “forced” to give air time to Ahmadinejad whose horrific support for terrorism and promotion to destroy Israel sends goose bumps to decent people worldide. Most observers doubt Ahmadinejad's hyperbolic rhetorics and many don’t believe his vitriol and clever pretentions. With a sluggish UN, few nations however speak up and stand against his way.
For not suspending its uranium enrichment, three rounds of UN sanctions hasn't deterred Iran from continuing its nuclear activities. It's this type of UN sanctions that Sadam Hussein endured until after 16 unheeded resolutions which led to the Iraq war that was supported albeit lamely by the UN.
The possibililty of nuclear war is ever more real in the current stockpiles of weapons whose oversight is increasingly becoming more difficult. Serving as a political tool and a weapon of intimidation, the acquisition of nuclear arms by unstable countries like Iran, Pakistan and North Korea is a scary step towards the planet's destruction. It encourages terrorists and extremists to work harder to destabilize the world and make the nuclear cloud closer to reality.
With rogue nations sitting side by side in UN in “cooperation” with those committed to make the world a peaceful place, the challenge of diplomacy is ever more complex and daunting. The world body cannot even agree on who are the terrorists. Having reckless leaders like Ahmadinejad who denies the holocaust, lacks accountability, threatens Israel, and wages proxy wars (Hezbollah and Iraq) could be the signs of what lies in the future. Amidst complacency and denial, terror persists, USA & the world still on the edge
Two days before the 7th year after 911, a bipartisan report suggests that the United States is still dangerously at risk of being attacked by weapons of mass destruction (WMB’s.) Democrats critical of Pres. George W. Bush are quick to highlight the dangers. And they don’t leave the psyche of Americans traumatized by the randomness of the attack. “The report and supporting studies describe the failure of international cooperation to prevent terrorists from obtaining weapons of mass destruction, which they call a major problem. Many countries continue to ignore a United Nations mandate to prevent the spread of weapons; the ability of many countries to monitor potential bioterrorism is "essentially nonexistent," and dangerous chemical weapons stockpiles remain in some countries, including Russia and Libya, the report said.” AP (09/09/08, BlackledgeB; SullivanE.)
In spite of moves to make the homeland secure, the nature of terrorism makes it hard to wipe out the threats. This worry is part of the legacy of 911 when the rules of engagement of war have been defined by a small group of extremists who are bent to make America and the rest of the civilized world accede to Al Qaeda's and other Islamic toxic ideology of hate.
Bringing America down has serious implications in emerging and poor countries like the Philippines whose economies will further suffer in the midst of a threat of war, worldwide recession, dwindling resources, and exploding population. Though Pres. Bush must be credited for foiling a number of plots and in improving security during his administration, many don’t look at it this way. It is hard to see success in prevention that has an astronomical price tag.The cost of underwriting a protective shield for Americans and the world is causing a toll on the US economy. Only when another attack as spectacular and hideous as 911 will Americans, (especially the cynical and complacent) will realize that the world they know has been turned upside down by a few rogues who wait for the singular chance to do harm and damage. Terror resonates in 911 and the attacks in Madrid, London, Jerusalem, Riyadh, Nairobi, Bali, Manila and other cities worldwide. New Pakistani president’s war against terror & the need to secure nuclear weapons
Pakistan enters a new phase in governance with the election of Pres. Asif Ali Zadari, 53 year old widower of slain leader Benazir Bhutto who died on December 27, 2007. His landslide win on September 6, 2008 is immediately greeted by a huge suicide explosion near Peshawar, a troubled northwest part of the country killing at least 35 and wounding many more. Militants allied with the Taliban claimed responsibility for blowing up a pick-up truck that counted a teacher, a guard and seven police officers among the dead. AP (09/07/08, Khan, R.)Called Mr. Ten Percent for alleged corruption during the Bhutto administration, Zadari who is considered as a pro-Western liberal is expected to follow Pervez Musharraf’s anti-terrorist efforts. Hard on insurgency in this violence-prone Moslem nation, Zadari’s position is in line with the American campaign against Islamic terrorism in neighboring Afghanistan. But he faces pressure to balance the local crack-down down on militants and his support for United States which recently led a controversial assault against rebels in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
"I've been impressed by some of the things he has said about the challenges that Pakistan faces, about the centrality of fighting terrorism, about the fact that the terrorism fight is Pakistan's fight and also his very strong words of friendship and alliance with the United States," Condolezza Rice said. Washington is closely concerned with the future of Pakistan with its arsenal of nuclear weapons. With the power to scrap the parliament and appoint army officers, Zadari heads the civilian-military committee which oversees Pakistan's nuclear arms. Frog on the cross: insensitivity that they can’t do to the Moslems
In an environment of rising religious insensitivity, intolerance and persecution, a museum in northern Italy approved the display of a frog on a cross, the sacred symbol of suffering and redemption among Christians. Negating religious sensitivity, the museum keepers insist on art freedom for showing a tasteless crappy “sculpture” that cause revulsion and sadness to many--- not only to Christians worldwide, but to people of all backgrounds. They seem proudly convinced they are doing the right thing.
For fear of being nuked or killed, they couldn’t do such cowardly act and double standard with the Moslems if Islam's Prophet Mohammed were to be portrayed in that insulting manner. Such affront to a particular religion must not be tolerated. Hyping a controversy that is likely to cause divisions, is the last thing responsible people need at a time when the world seeks unity, charity, and peace. =0=
PAF: A lone cargo plane for a thousand brave men
The Philippine Airforce (PAF) faces a significant blow in the crashing of a C-130 cargo plane in Davao, Philippines on August 26, 2008. One of only two remaining cargo planes that fly, the craft went down while on a military mission in Southern Philippines, killing its pilot and crew under yet-to-determined circumstances. It raises the possibility of terrorism or sabotage.The C-130 is essential in ferrying military hardware and men in the country, particularly in war-torn Mindanao where Islamic separatist MILF and Moslem rebels are waging a fight. The plane serves as an over-taxed workhorse of the air for years---- one of only five, three of which are grounded for repairs.

The PAF, its military dependents, and civilians rely on the C-130 as means of travel in the islands. With thousands of ground airmen and personnel who are battle-ready and willing to defend the country, an acute lack of equipment, like a loss of a plane, is a crashing blow to the military which needs both force and air.
