PostHeaderIcon Typhoon Santi slams Luzon with strong wind and flash flooding

The fourth cyclone to pass the Philippines this year, Typhoon Santi (code name: Mirinae) quickly pummeled Manila, the Northern part of the Philippines and Bicol Region with strong winds and heavy rains last Friday, October 30, 2009.

The tropical disturbance came at the time when Filipinos were preparing for the traditional All Saint’s Day celebration on November 1, 2009, stranding many travelers on their way home to the provinces.

As a result of better disaster preparation, many mishaps were avoided in vulnerable communities in Manila, Bicol and Central Luzon. The early evacuation of about 115,000 people avoided injuries and casualties that could have been caused by the wicked storm that earlier brought signal number 3 in many places.

“Santi, which weakened into a storm as it heads toward the South China Sea, caused “minimal casualties,” the National Disaster Coordinating Council said Saturday afternoon, killing at least one person.

At 2 p.m., the storm was seen 170 kilometers southwest of Manila, packing maximum sustained winds of 105 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 135 kph, the state weather bureau Pagasa said."---
Inquirer (10/31/09, Evangelista, K)

Flooding up to waist deep in certain areas were observed in Laguna, a province hard hit by Tyhpoon Ondoy. Some residents had to go to rooftops to avoid the rising water. In lesser extent, this happened again when Santi passed by.

Electrical power interruptions were reported in various places in Bicol Region. Many passengers on their way home for the weekend All Saint’s celebration were stranded in bus terminals and sea ports.

Certain dams and waterways were opened to prevent the repeat flooding which occurred in Nuevea Ecija, Pangasinan, Aurora, etc. All international and local flights from and to Manila were temporarily cancelled said airport manager Alfredo Cusi.

The government, the military, and its disaster agencies are on the process of helping affected families. They are on the field to assess the exact damage of the wicked weather disturbance. (Photo Credit: Ray Bruna/ Reuters) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Typhoon Santi heads for Central Luzon

Barely a week after Ramil, the typhoon that passed Northern Luzon, another storm has developed and is headed to Central Luzon. Santi, the fourth cyclone coming into the country's territory packs winds at about 150 kph, threatening residents previously affected by wicked weather.

The new typhoon is expected to bring rains and flooding in the area including Metro Manila. Part of the seasonal disturbance, the storm will reach land on Saturday probably passing close to Aurora and Nueva Ecija.

”Based on Pagasa's forecast, Santi’s center is expected to be 180 km east of Baler, Aurora province by Saturday morning, cross Central Luzon throughout the day, and be on its way out at 240 km west northwest of Manila by Sunday morning.:---GMA.new.Tv.com (10/28/09)

From Bicol to Central Luzon, signal number two has been declared. Santi is the 19th weather turbulence that will likely affect the Philippines this year. As a precaution, the Coast Guard has suspended sea travel from Aurora to Camarines Sur in Bicol at a time when the entire country is preparing for the feast of All Saints' Day.

"Aside from Metro Manila, the provinces of Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Tarlac, Zambales, Pampanga, Bataan, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Lubang Island, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur and Catanduanes were placed under Signal No. 2and these areas will experience winds of 60-100 kph, PAGASA said."---Inquirer (10/30/09, Papa, A.)

PostHeaderIcon New Jersey ends fiesta with joyful anticipation of 300th year of Penafrancia devotion in 2010

Rev. Msgr. Jeremias R. Rebanal, Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotees Association’s (OlPDA) spiritual adviser called faith-based activities like the Penafrancia fiesta in New Jersey, USA as instruments which help renew, strengthen, and enrich “our faith through our Ina.” According our insightful pastor, through Jesus’ mother, “we can live and enjoy the present with her, our future filled with hope, peace, and love that can only come from the Lord."

With undbridled gladness, similar messages had been said by Rev. Msgr. Romulo Vergara, the rector of the Penafrancia Basilica and National Shrine in Naga City and Rev. Jose C. Saltarin of St. Anne’s Church in New Jersey who emphasized Ina’s maternal protection wherever we might be. From a beautiful Filipino song Fr. Saltarin paraphrased:

Saan ka man naroon anak,
Sana’y malaman mo na mayroon kang Ina
Ang ‘yong Ina, Maria ang pangalan,
Bigay ng Dios sa iyong lahi.
Saan ka man naroroong bansa,
Pangarap ko ikaw, pagkat mahal kita.
Asahan mong sa habang panahon
'Ka’y anak ko pa rin, saan ka man naroroon.

Saen ka man magduman aki,
Sana mamidmidan mo na igua kang Ina
Ang saimong Ina, Maria an pangaran.
Ta'o nin Diyos sa saimong angkan.
Saen ka man napaduman na lugar,
Pangiturogan ta ika, dahil padangat ta ika
Asahan mo sa habang panahon,
Ika aki ko pa man guiraray, saen ka man magduman.

Such wonderful words to expatriate Bicolanos and all Filipinos worldwide couldn’t be said at a better time, when we start preparing for next year’s 300th year of Penafrancia devotion in Bicol.

This September, we were blessed to have well-intentioned Bicolano leaders of OLPDA and affiliate organizations---the Bicol Association Inc. of the Eastern Seaboard USA (BAES) and the Ateneo de Naga Alumni Association working in unity and cooperation. Energized by a team of supportive devotees, volunteers, and friends, Amado Cabaero, Jr., this year’s chairman, led the group to make the Penafrancia celebration in the Northeast a complete success.

Having gone through the nightly prayers and fellowship at the Our Lady of Victories Church (OLV,) the fiesta reeled with the traditional fluvial procession by ardent "voyadores." A rousing tribute to God and Ina followed on that clear sunny afternoon of Saturday, September 19, 2009 at CRRNJ Terminal Building in Jersey City, New Jersey.

As an expression of gratitude OLPDA once again invites devotees, families, and friends to come for a solemn mass at the OLV Church at Kennedy Blvd, NJ on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 3 PM.(Photo Credit: balaoglogo) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Mayon in heightened volcanic activity

After a display of restiveness for the last few days, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvocs) is thinking of raising the level of alertness against eruption to level 3. This is after the Mayon observers documented more gas emissions of 934 tons , mainly sulfur dioxide, in the last 24-hour period on Wednesday, September 16, 2009. In the previous day, they recorded 682 tons of emission compared 406 tons on Septermber 14, 2009.

The successive blowing up of gas made Albay Gov. Joey Salceda, the head of the provincial disaster coordinating council to order disaster groups and residents to be watchful of the guidelines of safety to avoid injuries and deaths in case a full eruption occurs. (Photo Credit: Norkfam) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Penafrancia Fiesta 2009 in Gainesville, Georgia

Surogon mo ngani kami
Ta ika namomo'otan mi.

----Bicol Religious Hymn

The celebration of Ina who is venerated as the Patroness of Bicol is mainly centered in Naga City where the celebration is about to start on September 11, 2009. Similarly in various places of the world where Bicolanos are, the merry remembrance of Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia is a traditional rallying point to express faith, camaraderie, cooperation, and sense of oneness with the community.

With the recall of Divino Rostro (Divine Face,) the celebration also focuses on Jesus, our savior whose redemptive suffering in Calvary is memorialized in Veronica's holy imprint of his face.

From Dacula, Georgia, Dr. Lino Mercurio who is originally from Buhi, Camarines Sur sent us their wonderful plan this September. Sponsored by generous families of the area, novena prayers will be held in honor of Ina and the Divino Rostro.

Imbued with tradition and lore, the beautiful religious activity of the diaspora recapitulates the observance in Bicol Region on its 299th year. It will be capped with fluvial procession and a feast at Lake Lanier in Gainesville sponsored by Georgia's Sarung Banggi on Saturday, September 19, 2009.

Fr. Rodolfo Cal Ortiz, a Bicolano priest from Houston, Texas will officiate in the solemn mass. Everyone is invited. Those who wish to attend the happy fiesta may contact the phone numbers below. (Photo Credits: Dr. Lino Mercurio) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Bicol bishops up against coal mining in Catanduanes

Bishops in Bicol have voiced their opposition against the Monte de Oro Resources and Energy Inc. which was awarded exploration of 7,000 hectares for coal mining in towns of San Andres, Caramoan and Panganiban in Catanduanes.

A friend of Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo, Enrique Razon is the owner of the private company which has an additional 8,000 hectares allocated by the Department of Energy for the same purpose. The mining operation is expected to yield P6.2 billion, bringing the government 3% return of P186 million and P9 million in taxes.

The bishops are planning to ask help from Pope Benedict XVI in their rejection of the mining project which endangers the environment, disrupts livelihood, and threatens destruction of Catanduanes Island. Their position is supported by the Provincial Board of Catanduanes which passed a resolution supporting the pro-environmet and anti-mining stance.

The bishops recall the mining experience of Rapu-Rapu, Albay in the Diocese of Legazpi, which caused pollution and threatened the health of the residents in the area. In December 2008, the bishops informed the pope of their concerns and they plan to follow the issue with him in the Vatican.

“We are going to meet this coming November to come up with another pastoral letter, statements and another letter to be sent to the Pope,” said Bishop Quiambao.

The 2008 letter was signed by Bishops Leonardo Legaspi of the metropolitan archbishop of Caceres, Arturo Bastes of the Diocese of Sorsogon, Manolo A. de los Santos of Virac, Gilbert Carcera of Daet, Joel Baylon Masbate, Jose Rojas Jr. of Libmanan, and Quiambao
.”---Inquirer (08/20/09, Nasol, Rey, M; Gianan, F.)

The mining exploration is not bad per se. Mining provides livelihood and improves the economy in the community. Yet to operate, it has to have safeguards against pollution and environmental destruction. A rejection of the exploration is valid if these safeguards aren’t met and the benefits of the operation will not benefit the the community.(Photo Credit: xiquinhosilva) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Celebrating Baao Pintakasi 2009 in Las Vegas Nevada in style!

by Augusto F. Mesia, M.D.

Before August 24, St. Bartholomew, the revered patron saint of Baao, Camarines Sur must be very happy. The itinerant apostle who traveled and evangelized near the coast of Caspian Sea, Persia, Armenia, Egypt, and as far as India was remembered early this year in America.

Before the feast day, in Las Vegas, his special memory was celebrated. Saint Bartholomew had been venerated not only by the Roman Catholic Church but by other Christian denominations such as the Eastern Christian Orthodox Church, the Coptic Christians, Anglicans, and Lutheran Churches.

In the 1st century, the martyred follower of Jesus was flayed and beheaded for his heroic Christian deeds. For that, Baaoenos had not forgotten to honor St. Bartholomew's valor, faith, and religious conviction. That was why last Saturday, August 8, 2009, in Las Vegas, Nevada, the fabulous Pintakasi 2009 pulled earlier than Baao's fiesta back home to glorify his name. A solemn mass officiated by three priests ushered in the affair.

The grand event with lots of surprises was attended by an eager crowd of Baaoenos and friends who traveled far and wide to join the fellowship that certainly had the trimmings of the traditional merry celebration of the Bicol town. A good number came to join the fun, but certainly, there were those who in their absence were sorely missed.

The feast started with a concelebrated thanksgiving prayer that united the attendees and set the festive tone of the grand occasion. In a capacious hall decorated by balloons, they gathered in intimate togetherness, partaking the food and joys of being glued as a community---bonded in ways that only they could ever fully express.

Pintakasi 2009 was particularly dazzling for not only did the day gather hundreds of spritely guests, friends and relatives, but it brought something impressively memorable in Baao’s name. The hosptality is immense. Young and old, they came to share camaraderie and spread around friendship in a place far removed from the quaint town of their origin in Camarines Sur.

Having seen familiar beautiful faces, those who attended huddled in animated “kurumustahan,” in what could be regarded as plain fun within the fleeting time frame of an action-filled weekend. Rinconada dialect must have been the hot currency of conversations which heightened the closeness of the Baao herd.

The hall had that electrifying buzz. Talented Baaoenos showcased their dances and songs. Some went for a refreshing deep in a pool with the children. Others cracked their novel “pangisihan” to the delight of the crowd.

There were those who were content sipping chilled wine in a friendly round table, thumping their feet to the candence of nearby music. A group laughed it out loud in the parlor games that brought winners and losers in an exciting competition of agility and wits.

The bright sun, nearer than usual to the hearts of many, drenched Nevada, sans nieve (snow) for which it was named, at the peak of summer---Surely, it was to the delight of those who came for the Pintakasi whose festive spirit had taken root on their senses.

The memories they brought home this year would hum in their thoughts like fine-tuned mellow music till the next fiesta brings them back again in a cycle of unity and goodwill. They will tag along their innocent children to add wonder and joy to the yearly tradition.(Photo Credits: Angel Martires, Tony Martires, Tess Salah) =0=
