Prelate rues over slanted coverage of Penafrancia fiesta
When Tong Pilar, my friend and classamate in New Jersey told me that a brawl erupted during the Traslacion in the Penafrancia celebration in Naga City, I felt sad. I thought this year’s fiesta was marred by a few irresponsible people of Maogmang Lugar.
My friend’s story of seeing in TV a priest assaulted during the Friday procession was very disconcerting. As far as I could recall, such disdainful behavior did not happen when I was growing up in that peaceful city. The bad news came to New York in tandem with the local government promoting a secular program of public drinking, gay beauty contests, and other “demeaning” activities that wasn’t in synch with the fiesta’s religious purpose. With civic activities that tend to denigrate Ina, I thought, Penafrancia had gone to the dogs.
Daet Bishop Gilbert Gacera however had a different take on the issue. He said the Penafrancia celebration this year was supposed to be as peaceful as before. It was the media who sensationalized the melee which painted an ugly picture of the whole event. The isolated incident was aired in the internet and in major national TVs as though it dominated the celebration. This he said wasn’t true.
As a result of the bad publicity, Bicolanos were unduly portrayed in a bad light. The peaceful procession was made to appear that it ended in trouble. Bishop Garcera was saddened by the lopsided coverage of the fiesta which came at a time when the Catholic Church made effort to make Ina’s tribute more spiritually meaningful at the eve of her tercenary. Clash between Penafrancia tradition & the secular festivities of Naga City government
With the backing of the Archdiocese of Caceres and the Roman Catholic clergy, religious groups of Naga City complained to the Naga City government for reneging on a bilateral agreement to ban activities that didn’t reflect the faith-based observance of the Penafrancia fiesta. In part, the letter sent by the laity to City Mayor Jesse Robredo read:
“We are disappointed and dismayed when we saw the calendar of activities prepared by the city government of Naga published in its widely distributed Viva Naga, Viva Bicolandia pamphlet. Viva Naga and Viva Bicolandia Festival include activities that have been banned within the novena on moral grounds. In the joint statement, it is very clear that pageants and beer plazas should not be held within the period of the novena.”---Vox Bicol (09/13/09)
The letter was sent by concerned citizens representing groups like the Archdiocesan Council of the Laity, Apostleship of Prayer, Our Lady of Peñafrancia Association, Holy Name Society, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Mother Butlers' Guild, Parish Renewal Experience (PREX), Couples of Christ, Pastoral Council of Bagumbayan Sur, Knights of Columbus, Children of Mary, and Visita Domiciliaria among others, airing their disapproval to government-sponsored revelries like gay beauty pageants, street parties, and drinking fests.
Demanding for accountability from those who plan and implement the highly secular civic celebration, the church-affiliated groups considered the vulgar activities disrespectful to the tradition of prayer to God and Ina that the Bicol-wide Penafrancia celebration is known for.(Photo Credit: Jerry Lim Lee) =0=

----Bicol Religious Hymn
The celebration of Ina who is venerated as the Patroness of Bicol is mainly centered in Naga City where the celebration is about to start on September 11, 2009. Similarly in various places of the world where Bicolanos are, the merry remembrance of Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia is a traditional rallying point to express faith, camaraderie, cooperation, and sense of oneness with the community.
With the recall of Divino Rostro (Divine Face,) the celebration also focuses on Jesus, our savior whose redemptive suffering in Calvary is memorialized in Veronica's holy imprint of his face.
From Dacula, Georgia, Dr. Lino Mercurio who is originally from Buhi, Camarines Sur sent us their wonderful plan this September. Sponsored by generous families of the area, novena prayers will be held in honor of Ina and the Divino Rostro.
Imbued with tradition and lore, the beautiful religious activity of the diaspora recapitulates the observance in Bicol Region on its 299th year. It will be capped with fluvial procession and a feast at Lake Lanier in Gainesville sponsored by Georgia's Sarung Banggi on Saturday, September 19, 2009.

OLPDA readies for the Traslacion on September 11 in New Jersey
After careful preparations made by the officers, coordinators and friends of the Our Lady of Penafrancia (OLPDA,) the association now looks forward to the September 11, 2009 Traslacion which will be held in Our Lady of Victories Church (OLVC) at 2217 JF Kennedy Boulevard, Jersey City, New Jersey.

According to Amado (Boy) Cabaero, OLPDA's overall chairman, the Friday event on September 11 will be capped with the recitation of rosary and a procession honoring Ina, the Mother of Jesus. It also jumpstarts the sacred evening novena in honor of Our Lady of Penafrancia and the Divine Face (Divino Rostro) to be offered by Bicolanos worldwide on the eve of 300 years of devotion.
The fiesta this year will have the solemn concelebrated mass, fluvial parade, and cultural program which will be on September 19, 2009 at the Liberty State Park, CRRNJ Terminal Bldg., 1 Zapp Drive, New Jersey. Everyone is cordially invited.
In Bicol, the translacion is a traditional procession which marks the transfer of the image of Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia from her village shrine in Balatas, to the historic Naga City Metropolitan Cathedral where a nine-day novena is slated by pilgrims and devotees.
The prayers and religious activities will culminate with the fluvial procession in Naga River on Saturday, September 19, 2009. The procession will be followed with a day of thanks on Sunday, ending the grand faith-based celebration. =0=

Sa pag-uswag nin tradicion kan Penafrancia sa Bicol, an mga tawo sa Naga pupu’nan an "Harubay ki Hesus asin Ina," sarong religiosang actividad dapit sa pag-dangadang kan ika-300 anyos na debosyon sa mahal na imahen ni Nuestra Sra. de Penafrancia sagkod ang retrato kan Divino Rostro ni Hesus.
Kan hinapot si Fr. Louie Occiano na pamayo nin Caceres Communications Commission, an "harubay" suanoy na tataramon na an muyang sabihon pagbareta o pagbandillo. Angelita de Leon-Pena’s job experience comes from years of sterling service in the corporate world and from human interactions that count. For many years she has worked as the assistant vice-president of New York Mellon Bank after serving in Corporate Trust Department of US Bank, the State Street Bank, Citibank (NY,) and the Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Naga City, Philippines.
The affable lady that I know since our days in Naga City has surely greater knowledge than what she knows about the financial health of America. She is now the incoming president of the Bicol National Association of America (BNAA,) a coalition of organizations of Bicolanos across the United States.

Serving as this year’s NAFFA’s Filvote Chair for Hudson County in New Jersey, Lita, the radiant civic leader of New Jersey can surely deliver the goods. On her gaudy sleeves rest a treasure trove of public service accomplishments that matter---those which draw people to be united with the community.
Consistently praised for her energy, Lita was appointed by Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy as board of director of the Jersey City Training & Development Center in last year. As two-term president of the Greenville Fil-Am Bowling League and past board of director & vice-president of the Folklorico Dance Company of New York, she organized OLPDA of the Tri-State Area in the early 1990’s which encouraged faith-based veneration of Ina in America, the mother-patroness of the Bicol Region.
For all the sacrifices she endured, Lita didn’t lack the admiration of her kababayans who trust her ability. The Philippine New York Jaycees gave her the outstanding community leadership award in 2003. Along with Peng, her devoted husband, she was named by the New Jersey Parent Foundation as the 2000 Parent of the Year---a coveted distinction that brought sparks of inspiration to family-oriented souls across races and backgrounds.
As a keynote speaker, in 2002, the Bicol Canada, Inc, (Etobicoke, Canada) presented Lita a certificate of appreciation for her selfless service to Bicolanos as she helped improve the quality of life in Jersey City and in the Bicol Region.
A dynamic lady leader who kindly encouraged Filipinos to embark on community undertakings, Lita was given the Women’s Achiever’s Award by Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and by the Pan American Concerned Citizens Action League of Jersey City. She received a certificate of appreciation from the mayor citing her outstanding commitment and continuous support for the Filipino American Veterans Organization of New Jersey. Given a service award in 2007, she was likewise cited for brilliant leadership and dedication by the BNAA-Eastern Seaboard.
Lita graduated from the Colegio de Sta. Isabel High School in Naga City. She finished her college education at the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) in Manila, Philippines where she earned her accounting and business administration degree.
Married to Eufronio Pena of Naga City, she is a proud and loving mom of three wonderful children--- Eduardo, married to Marsha Rafanan, Ysadora, married to Alan Clarin and Eric, married to Ivy Damian. Lita and Peng, are happy grandparents to Alexa, Jonah, Aivery, Drew and Jaxsen. Angelita de Leon-Pena’s job experience comes from years of sterling service in the corporate world and from human interactions that count. For many years she has worked as the assistant vice-president of New York Mellon Bank after serving in Corporate Trust Department of US Bank, the State Street Bank, Citibank (NY,) and the Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Naga City, Philippines.
The affable lady that I know since our days in Naga City has surely greater knowledge than what she knows about the financial health of America. She is now the incoming president of the Bicol National Association of America (BNAA,) a coalition of organizations of Bicolanos across the United States.

Grand Penafrancia Fiesta 2008 in Liberty Park, New Jersey
As the breeze of the coming fall season filled the air and the bright summer sun brought joy and cheers to a throng of enthusiastic devotees, the feast of Bicolandia’s patroness, Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia (Ina) and the Divino Rostro (Divine Face) was successfully commemorated on Saturday, September 20, 2008. Ending the nine-day prayers in Ina’s honor, the celebration was held in a new venue at the CRRNJ Terminal Building, Liberty State Park, 1 Zapp Drive, Jersey City, NJ, USA.
Sparked with a colorful fluvial procession and rosary recitation, the event was followed by a solemn concelebrated mass officiated by Bicolano priests headed by Msgr. Jeremias B. Rebanal. With Ina’s message of unity and love, Msgr. Rebanal underscored the continued intercessions of God’s Mother venerated by Bicolanos for centuries.
In keeping with Ina’s celebrations worldwide, the Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotees Association (OLPDA) of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut under the leadership of Virgie Jacobson and in cooperation with the Bicolandia Association of the Eastern Seaboard made sure the event was meaningful and memorable. The festivity was capped with a grand reunion and salo-salo followed by a brief, but exciting cultural program emceed by Fiorel Salvo and Erlinda Requejo-Arellano.
The occasion was highlighted by kurumustahan and pabiristohan---the renewal of friendships and hospitality expressed among kababayans. Buried for 21 years in mud, a Virgin’s crown is recovered
Lost in the muddy confines of the river where the fluvial parade passes during the annual Penafrancia fiesta in Naga City, Philippines, the crown of Ina was finally recovered during last month’s waterway clean-up. Shown by Rev. Msgr. Romulo A.Vergara, Rector of Penafrancia Basilica (right photo) is the valuable piece of Marian history---the once-missing bejeweled crown of the miraculous image of Ina, the Virgin of Penafrancia which disappeared when the icon tumbled into the river in the penultimate day of the feast, 21 years ago on September 19, 1997 during a fluvial procession.

Losing and finding the icon of the Virgin of Penafrancia: why the public deserves to know
The plot was not as riveting and complicated as the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark, but when the image of the Virgin of Penafrancia (Ina) aka Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia vanished on August 16, 1981, the Filipinos were devastated.
There was revulsion among the people when unnamed burglar(s) barged into the Penafrancia Church and snatched the centuries-old Ina, the most popular sacred object of Marian veneration of Bicolanos. The antique image went missing for about three weeks fueling speculations and causing the death of a Naga city policemen. The Virgin's image was returned before the annual September fiesta in her honor.
Countless devotees went on penitential processions praying for the recovery of Ina’s image. On September 5, 1981, Typhoon Ruping swept the land. Msgr. Florencio Yllana, the former chaplain of the Penafrancia Church, went to Manila to receive the 6-part statue of the Virgin when it reappeared.
A thanksgiving mass was offered in the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral after the wooden image was brought back to Naga. The city buzzed with rumors, but church and government officials were tight-lipped on who was behind the theft. At the time when Pres. Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Imelda were in power, no one dared to ask. The Catholic clergy cryptically said, “it’s enough that Ina is back!”
No it isn't enough. For the sake of history, accountability, and justice for Patrolman Reynaldo Neola (the policeman who died looking for the missing Virgin,) the public to this day deserves to know. It's time that those who are privy to the circumstances of the theft must speak up to unravel the truth before time buries an ignominious footnote in Penafrancia's past. (Photo Credit: JerryLimLee)

From Aparri to Jolo, visitors are expected to come in the southern peninsula of Luzon island. They are part of the plethora of sights and sounds that Bicolanos will enjoy during the week-long Penafrancia fiesta.
Honoring the historic ebony Marian icon of Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia, aptly referred to as Ina, the Virgin Mother of God, the Bicolanos worldwide have these glittery days set. The feast culminates in a spectacular river procession which brings the holy image of Ina to the Penafrancia Basilica where a thanksgiving mass is offered the next day. In far New Jersey just like in other places abroad, the officers and members of Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotees Association (OLPDA) and the Bicolandia Association have similar activities too. Penafrancia Fiesta 2008
It’s in September when Bicolanos pay tribute to the Virgin of Penafrancia, the patroness of the Bicol region in the Philippines. Wrapped in lore and tradition, the age-old Marian devotion starts with the Traslacion, a religious procession which brings Nuestra Senora de Penafrancia’s brown image and the Divino Rostro (Divine Face) of Jesus to the Naga Cathedral marking the start of the annual nine-day prayers. Drawing enthusiastic crowds from all corners of the world, the feast of food, family reunions, prayers, parades, thanksgivings, and revelries, is highlighted by a colorful river procession of devotees and “voyadores,” marking the return of Ina’s ebony icon in her home at the Basilica Shrine.
