Actor Johnny Delgado dies of lymphoma
Philippine veteran TV and movie actor Johnny Delgado succumb to malignant lymphoma, a form of lymph node cancer on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at the age of 61. Two days before his death, he was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital suffering from complications of the disease and chemotherapy.
The entertainment celebrity was popular in his many film and TV appearances which spanned for four decades. In the 1980’s he was a regular actor in “Goin’ Bananas.” He played a role in “Tanging Yaman,” a drama which gained him a FAMAS Award as the 2000 best actor. Johnny was the husband of Laurice Guillen and father of Ben Feleo---both film-makers by profession.
A devout Catholic Christian, Johnny’s remains was brought to New Manila, Quezon City at our Lady of Mount Carmel Shrine for viewing prior to the burial at the Loyola Memorial Park on November 24, 2009. (Photo Credit: Weiss08) =0=

Jay, 25, was loving brother to Allan Espano, married to Katherine of Jacksonville, Florida and to Brian Espano, married to Sarah of Torrington, Connecticut.
A computer enthusiast, amiable Jay was the proud uncle of two beautiful nieces, Elize and Heide. He was survived by his affectionate parents, doting aunts, uncles, and cousins who reside in Maryland, California, Canada, and the Philippines. The Espanos are originally from Nabua, Camarines Sur in Bicol. We request readers to pray for Jay’s eternal repose.

“…that girl given the name of the ancient goddess of hunting was, in the end, the most hunted person of the modern age.”
In the early morning of August 31, 1997, Princss Diana died of injuries sustained in a horrible car crash in Paris as reporters hounded her. The memory of her short life receded in time, but one could recall that on September 6, 1997, her brother Earl Charles Spencer delivered a breath-taking tribute to the world’s Queen of Hearts--- that was during her interment, 12 years ago. At Westminster Abbey where the tombs of England’s monarchs rested, the irreplaceable Diana was eulogized that stirred the feelings of those present and the millions who watched in anguish in TV.
Tony Blair called her the people's princess. For her philantrophic works on landmines and babies wih AIDS, Daily Express referred to her as an "international angel of mercy." Part of Spencer's eulogy to the lady with a "sparkle in those unforgettable eyes" beautifully reads:
“Today is our chance to say thank you for the way you brightened our lives, even though God granted you but half a life.
We will feel cheated always that you were taken from us so young and yet we must learn to be grateful that you came along at all. Only now that you are gone do we truly appreciate what we are now without and we want you to know that life without you is very, very difficult.

UP Ibalon-Bicol congratulates Dr. Irene Gaile C. Robredo for passing the recent natioal board examination for physicians given by the Professional Regulations Commission PRC).
The only daughter of fellow-Ibalonian Jose (Butch) Robredo, Jr. and niece of Ibalonian Dr. Josephine R. Bundoc and Naga Mayor Jesse Robredo, Gaile graduated from the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Medical Center and took her internship at UP-PGH. Church spokesman Bienvenido Santiago announced that Erano Manalo, the supreme leader and successor of Felix Manalo, founder of Iglesia ni Christo (INC,) died in his home at the age of 84 on Monday, August 31, 2009 at 3:53 PM. Mourned by his flock, he was born in January 2, 1925---the fifth child of the church founder who died in 1963.
A friend to many, Ka Erdy as he was fondly called led the growth of the religious group with about 2 to 8 million members mostly in the Tagalog regions and others spread globally in about 60 countries.
In 2004, Ka Erdy supported Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo to be president. Having a strong political clout and grounded in his religious belief, the influential religious leader asked his members to participate in politics. He could persuade them to cast their ballot, as high as 75% of block voting, for a particular endorsed candidate.
“It is widely known that the INC's power lies in the tagubilin emanating from Manalo and other church leaders, orders that cannot be disputed by members and can be used to command voting blocs around the country... While Manalo often used his power to support certain candidates in the past - aside from Marcos and Estrada, he also backed Eduardo Cojuangco in 1992 - he famously wielded his clout during the EDSA Tres demonstrations that reached the gates of Malacañang, arguably still the most serious threat the Arroyo administration has faced. According to Dr. Ray Melchor Santos, Manalo, the executive minister of the religious group died of cardiopulmonary arrest. His remains will be taken to the INC’s central temple in Quezon City.

On Saturday, August 29, 2009, Sen. Edward (Ted) Kennedy who died this week of malignant glioma, a form of aggressive brain tumor was buried with full honors in Arlington Cemetery in Virginia beside his ill-fated slain brothers Pres. John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert Kennedy.
In a solemn sundown ceremony, the 77 year-old senator was carried to his final resting place attended by close relatives, friends, and millions of admirers who watched in TV. His death marked the closure of a chapter in a colorful life of the legendary Kennedy clan which awed the imagination of many Americans and people of the world.
Edward, the 9th child and youngest in the family of Joseph and Rose Kennedy served as a government official for almost 50 years, leaving with him a mixed legacy of successes and disappointments. His dream to be United States president was dashed by tragedies, personal foibles, and human limitations,
A towering influential figure in Capitol Hill, Edward, the “Lion of the Senate,” was a liberal democrat who reached out across party lines to tackle public issues so diverse as healthcare, immigration, wages, racial bias, gender discrimination, nuclear proliferation, and civil rights. No wonder there had been a lot to say about his contribution and legacy.
A remarried divorcee from Massachusetts, Ted had been a proponent of abortion which proved antithetical to Catholic Church teaching which he professed. Before he died, coinciding Pres. Barack Obama’s visit to Rome, he asked the president to personally deliver his letter to Pope Benedict XVI. The Vatican acknowledged Ted’s outstanding contributions to society and the Holy Father prayed for his solace and comfort during his most difficult time. The plan to make his niece Caroline Kennedy as US ambassador to the Holy See didn’t materialize.
In support of Pres. Obama, his desire to overhaul healthcare is generally lauded for its scope to cover all Americans, but the contentious issues surrounding the bill have been the subject of heated debates. Aside from the cost of healthcare, the proposal has a tendency to “marginalize” the elderly, the chronically ill, and disabled.
There is the pervasive worry that the revamp will lead to more expenses, rationing of services, and the lack of doctors and nurses. Prolonged waiting times for diagnosis and treatment, and more government intrusion to the patient-and-doctor relationship are possible changes if the overhaul is implemented.
America’s healthcare system may end up faltering if funding is drastically cut, making it less possible to have the best medical services that Sen. Edward Kennedy used to extend his life. Because healthcare expenses can’t be sustained in the long haul, there is pressure to scrimp and dictate, endangering the quality of medical services particularly that of ordinary American citizens. Nobody fully realizes how medical students work hard in pursuit of fruitful careers no other than our fellow UPian Dr. Elna Nidea-Chia, an accomplished OB-Gynecologist in Naga City. Through the years, the indefatigable lady physician with a winsome smile and no-nonsense ability has nurtured her children with astounding success. I’m so happy and proud for my friend and her children.
Christine Marie, Elna’s first daughter now undergoes dermatology residency training in Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center in Manila. Chiara Mae, her second, finally passed the recent Philippine Medical Board examination. She is on the way to follow Elna's footsteps in the field of birthing and women’s diseases. These accomplishments inspired youngest Kara Lynn Marie, a cum laude medical technology graduate to take medicine at the University of Santo Tomas.
The three smart sisters have their brother Francis as a role-model who now works as a physical therapist in Seattle, Washington with wife Cyril, a tax accountant. The Nidea–Chia children count their outstanding success not only to their loving mom who is the incoming president of the Philippine Medical Association, Bicol Chapter, but to their dad as well---- Dr. Oswald Chia, an anesthesiologist. They are lucky to have their doting aunt Lena Nidea, a retired NYC mentor and affable uncle Allen Nidea, a lawyer based in New York. =0=

Herlin, as she was fondly called, died on Sunday August 23, 2009. After a solemn concelebrated mass officiated by Fr. Bitancur and Fr. Sen. Edward Kennedy, 77 dies of brain cancer
Edward (Ted) Kennedy, the 77-year old brother of Pres. John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Sen. Robert Kennedy died after a fight against brain cancer in Massachusetts. The controversial patriarch of the Kennedy clan whose career in the senate spanned almost half a century was a liberal democrat with a strong voice on issues of healthcare, education, immigration, and better wages.
The senator who reached out to colleagues of all political persuasions championed civil rights, defended the poor, worked to end the Vietnam war, and advocated against nuclear proliferation. From all over the world, his death elicited a flurry of recollections and praises for a towering political figure with indelible contribution to public service.
The 9th and youngest child of an influential political family of Joseph and Rose Kennedy, Edward became a senator in the early ‘60s raising hopes that he would one day become president. The legendary saga of his family and career however had been marked by a series of tragedy and personal triumph.
His brothers John Jr. and Robert died on the hands of assassins cutting short their political careers. His bid for the White House was thwarted by Jimmy Carter who won the presidential nomination in 1980. His ambition to hold the highest office of the land was ruined by the Chappaquiddick incident when the car he drove plunged into the river killing a young woman named Mary Jo Kopechne.
Having served briefly in the Army, Edward went to Harvard without finishing his education but graduated in the University of Virginia Law School. He was married to Joan Bennett Kennedy in 1958, but got divorced in 1982.
The white haired, barrel-chested senator with a booming voice remarried a young Washington lawyer named Victoria Reggie. His children included daughter, Kara Kennedy Allen, sons, Edward Jr. and Patrick, the congressman from Rhode Island, and stepchildren, Caroline and Curran Raclin.
Vigorously treated by the best doctors under the current healthcare he wanted to reform, he succumbed to a vicious form of cerebral tumor called malignant glioma. An ardet supporter of Pres. Barack Obama whom he endorsed in the presidential race, he asked his niece Caroline Kennedy to seek the New York senatorial position vacated by Hillary Clinton, but failed.
Proximate to his death, Ted asked his colleagues to revert the choice of a senate replacement for him from election to a gubernatorial selection---- so that the transition of office at the time of his death could be easy. Eunice Kennedy Shriver dies at 88
The sister of Pres. John F. Kennedy and Sen. Robert Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, 88, dies in a Cape Cod hospital in Massachussetts after a series of stroke. The influential lady of the Kennedy clan is known for her public service just like her brother Sen. Edward Kennedy who is stricken ill with brain cancer.
Eunice who was sick for sometime, was the originator of the Special Olympics in 1968 for the handicapped and physically challenged. The sporting event which brought hope and happiness to the disabled had been attended by at least a million participants in more than 160 countries since its inception. In her prime, the pillar of the Kennedys was politically and socially active in keeping with family tradition.

A member of Ateneo de Naga University High School class 1963 and College 1968, Aquilino served as the school’s college registrar. He was a loving brother to Mateo, Cecilia, Boy, and Amelia. After more than a year of fighting advanced colonic malignancy, Pres. Corazon C. Aquino, 76 died in peace in Manila early Saturday, August 2, 2009. The passing of the widow of martyred political leader Ninoy Aquino brought loss and sadness to the Filipino nation. In her life, she exemplified calm, grace, and strong conviction.
Prayers were being said when the former president had her last breath. In her hospital bed at the Makati Medical Medical Center, she was surrounded by her five children and friends.
A proponent of non-violence and peaceful change, Cory, a devout Catholic, was the inspiration which led the country to oust strongman Ferdinand E. Marcos in a popular People Power uprising in 1986, leading to her assumption of presidency.
During her term, her administration was rocked by 7 attempts of coup d’ etat as she tried to rid the country of the remnants of the Marcos dictatorship. Restoring democracy, she embarked on the implementation of land reform, but was accused of protecting the interest of rich land-owners. At the same time she offered to make peace with the communists while she tried to find solution to the separatist movement of Mindanao. After her presidency, she continued to work for social and political causes.
Cory, the feisty US-educated lady who wore her usual signature yellow dress, demonstrated a life of understated simplicity, working for the country’s unity till the end of her life.

Obituary: Pauline I. Velasco of Naga City

It’s with sadness that UP Ibalon Bicol mourns the passing of Pauline Ibarreta-Velasco, 79, the loving mom of Ibalonian Dr. May Magdalena Velasco Yorobe--- a long time friend.
A former Naga City public school teacher, Paulette was originally from Iriga City. She died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Her remains lie in Funeraria Imperial in Naga City. Interment is scheduled on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 coinciding the day she was born.
A solemn mass celebrating her life of fortiude and affectionate devotion will be offered in Penafrancia Basilica Minore before the burial.

In Memoriam: Aida B. Abella-Felipe, 84
For a time, she was one of Naga City’s most admired citizens. In the tradtion of devoted domesticity and homely calm, Aida B. Abella-Felipe lived the full life of a loving mother to children Cecile, Annabel, Amelia, Marlene, Emeterio, Ramon IV, Antero and Jesus. In peace, she died on April 4, 2009 at the age of 84 to be with the Lord.
Married for 66 years to the respected Naga ex-mayor Ramon H. Felipe, Jr., the faithful and resolute lady won’t be forgotten as the convent-bred granddaughter of Manuel P. Abella, one of the 15 Bicol Martyrs. She was a woman whose passing makes her family and those who know her feel the big loss.
In Colegio de Sta. Isabel (Naga) where the genteel and polished women of her days got their Catholic Christian upbringing, Mrs. Felipe got her character formation---just right for her to become the admirable matriarch of the Abella-Felipe clan. Helped by the Daughters of Charity sisters, she got further learning in Manila's Assumption College at a time when not so many women in her community devoted themselves to higher education.
In the backdrop of World War II, she married the guy who was to be one of the nation's top-notch lawyers and public servant. At peacetime, she patiently nurtured their 8 children, 7 children-in-law, 19 grandchildren, 6 grandchildren-in-law, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson, for a total of 52 descendants.---Bicol Mail (04/16/09, Escandor, Juan Jr)
