Perhaps no Philippine wedding can be called the most celebrated for this year without recalling the fabulous marriage of TV anchor and seasoned broadcaster Korina Sanchez to Sen. Mar Roxas on October 27, 2009.

In a dazzling nuptial attended by at least 3,000 well-wishers, the duo tied the knot at the Santo Domingo Church in Metro Manila on Tuesday. Many political figures, TV personalities, movie celebrities, and media persons attended.

At least 10 bishops led by Jaro Bishop Angel Lagdameo and Sorsogon Bishop Angel Valera officiated the solemn exchange of vows in the Catholic religious tradition. About 2,000 people waited outside the church to get a glimpse of the newly weds and see those who came to greet them.

The “wedding of the year” which was originally planned to welcome 10,000 guests in the Araneta Coliseum had been scaled down. Part of the money intended for the celebration was instead offered to help the victims of typhoons Ondoy and Peping that brought casualties and heavy damage to residents of Manila and its environs. The wedding bash with a price tag of three (3) million pesos of Sen. Mar Roxas and TV anchor Korina Sanchez in Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City was scrapped in favor a scaled-down celebration.

Opting for a fewer guests and a simpler and less extravagant celebration, the huge money to be spent for an estimated 10,000 well-wishers was instead set aside to assist the victims of the floods brought by Typhoon Ondoy and Peping. The admirable decision of the couple will surely help numerous Filipinos cope with the aftermath of the storm.

The celebrity nuptial will require Filipino attire for the limited media persons who will be granted access at the Sto. Domingo Church in Quezon City where the wedding will be held.

About 2,000 invited people, mostly members of the who’s who of local politics and the glittery segment of society will pack the church grounds during the wedding where the famous Madrigal Singers and the Philippine Harmonic Orchestra will perform. PostHeaderIcon Kuwaiti wedding fire kills 41

On Saturday, August 15, 2009, at least 41 women and children attending a wedding party died when a rapidly spreading fire engulfed the reception. There was a stampede following a break-out of fire which may have been sparked by faulty electrical wiring. Among the casualties are least 70 people who were injured.

Authorities had difficulty evacuating the death scene as relatives and curious on-lookers trooped to the scene in al-Jahra district west of Kuwait City.

Since many were seriously injured, the death toll was expected to rise. Police initiated an investigation as to the cause of the fiery incident. (Photo Credit: gypsygirl) =0=

PostHeaderIcon "Pamanhikan" ushers in the wedding bells of Sen. Mar Roxas and Korina Sanchez

In the age-old tradition of a Filipino marriage, Senator Manual Roxas and his would-be bride TV news anchor Korina Sanchez feted their respective families in a “pamanhikan,” a especial party prepared to honor the bride’s family capped with the groom’s public proposal of marriage.

After the acceptance of the proposal, the groom brought the elders of his family to meet the bride’s relatives in a happy feast of poems, songs, food, and dancing. It was supposed to be an occasion to discuss the arrangments of the coming wedding itself---the budget, number of guests, sponsors, place of ceremony and reception among other concerns.

For Mar and Korina, this pre-union Filipino custom was held on the night of June 14, 2009 in the beautiful home of the bride in Paranaque, Metro Manila. The gathering brought together the celebrities of the Araneta-Roxas clan and the brothers, nieces, uncles, aunts and relatives of the Sanchezes’ side. Visibly radiant in her sleeveless grey-brown dress, 44 year-old Korina whose parents died earlier had her friends and classmates witnessed the memorable affair. She definitely put more sheen on the feathers of Mar who needs them for the 2010 presidential election.

In Saudi Arabia a judge permitted an 8 year-old girl to divorce her 50 year-old groom. The girl was forced into marriage in August 2008 after her father run into debts and got a $13,000 dowry for his daughter. The mother of the bride objected and sought annulment.

Because there is no law in Saudi Arabia that rules on the marrying age, human rights groups pressure the Saudi government to enact a law to protect children in this situation.

“The 8-year-old girl's marriage was not the only one in the kingdom to receive attention in recent months. Saudi newspapers have highlighted several cases in which young girls were married off to much older men or young boys including a 15-year-old girl whose father, a death-row inmate, married her off to a cell mate.”---Yahoo.News.com/ AP (04/30/0, Al-Shalchi, H)



Upheld by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UNICEF executive director Ann Veneman stressed the right to a free and full consent in contracting marriage which is absent when the union involves a party that is too young to make such consent and informed decision.

Joining calls to end the practice of marriage by minors, the United States called such marriages as human rights violations. Undersecretary of state for political affairs William Burns said in a conference:

"Child marriage is, unfortunately, still common in much of Saudi Arabia and we have voiced our concern about this practice at the highest levels…We were encouraged by reports that the Justice Ministry had begun to review the legal age of marriage."----CNN.com (04/30/09, Jamjoom, M; Abedine, S)

In an early morning ceremony, movie celebrities Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo wedded on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 7:30 AM at San Juan Nepomuceno Church in San Juan, Batangas. Attended by few close friends and relatives,, the private ceremony was officiated their spiritual adviser, Fr. Tito Caluag.

Eager Fans were thrilled to know the simple wedding which was the subject of speculations for sometime. The couple was originally planning a trip to Mexico after the wedding, but was held off because of the flu scare. (Photo Credit: aryty) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Moral Challenge: angry gays protest ban of same-sex marriage in California

During the election in November 4, 2008, Californians were asked to decide on Proposition 8---a move to reverse the law enacted by the state Supreme Court in May 2008 on the validity of same-sex marriage.

Barack Obama fans and liberal democrats had a big surprise when West Coast's residents rejected gay marriage (approved Proposition 8) in spite of the secular reputation of California, a bastion of democrat-liberals who generally support gay lifestyle. Two thirds of California's black voters (66%) who voted for Obama didn’t do so for the lesbians and homosexuals. A record of these gays, 18,000 of them, forged matrimonies in the last 5 months before the election.

By the strength of the ballot, gay marriage prohibition won in California, Florida and Arizona. Only Massachusetts and Connecticut now approve same-sex marriages. On the other hand, New Jersey and New Hampshire only permit civil unions with the same legal rights as marriage.

What ensued was a flurry of gay activists’ angry protests who blamed religion, among others as a cause of their defeat. Despite the expressed will of the people, well-organized and vocal homosexual groups numbering up to 10,000 converged in San Diego on November 8, 2008 to protest.

In Salt Lake, Utah, a group of 2,000 staged a rally against the Church of the Latter Day's Saints (Mormons) and mainstream Christians who forbid gay marital unions. Five thousand (5,000) gay marriage supporters came to a similar mass action in Los Angeles area.

The passing of Proposition 8 in California is a victory for conservatives. For now, the religious right and those who want to uphold traditional family and moral values have an upper hand. But the radical liberals are fighting back to change the rules and impose alternative lifestyle for society. In spite of the understanding, tolerance, and partner benefits given to gay couples, moves to redefine marriage go on.

The increasingly secular world has made people to ponder on what is right and wrong. An alarming fifty (50%) of traditional marriages end up in divorce in the United States. There are those who think the socio-cultural debacle stirred by the same-sex marriage issue, along with questions on abortion, euthanasia, pornography, illegal drugs, and stem-cell research may indicate the fraying of America’s moral values which signals its decline. Respect for the poor, aged, disabled and children are on the wane.

Contrarians however think gay marriage is a boost to advance modernity and sophistication--- an expression of liberation from what others perceive as anachronism and religion’s oppressive hold on the people’s imagination. "Basta personal life ko, ‘di ko talaga sasagutin…I really just want to keep my private life private, as it has always been," said the 37 year-old Evangeline Lourdes “Luli” M. Arroyo, the daughter of Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo in a reaction to the news of her wedding.

The prospective groom is Luigi Bernas, the nephew of Rev. Joaquin Bernas of Ateneo de Manila Law School. While her father Miguel Arroyo expressed approval of the plan, Luli prefers to talk about her work more than her rumored marriage. Has anyone seen eyebrows rising or heard murmurs sounding? PostHeaderIcon Filipinos in Style: 10 helicopters eclipses the bride in a fabulous wedding in Davao

Not often heard of in the economy-battered country like the Philippines, a fabulous wedding held on Saturday, October 18, 2008 brought a fleet of 10 helicopters to the Seagull Mountain resort in Davao City for the wedding of Jeliza Farah, the daughter of Pres. Sec. Jesus Dureza to Rodford Uy.

Two of the helicopters were said to be government-owned, the others private. There must be a lot of “ahs and ohs” from the poor folks in the village where the spectacular fly-by of the entourage occured. A banana magnate, a mining official, a prominent protestant pastor, and a host of Pinoy glitterati were in attendance in the wedding solemnized by the local archbishop. Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo, former Pres. Fidel Ramos and National Sec. Adviser Norberto Gonzales stood as sponsors. The local police, members of the military, and the Presidential Security Group had to be called to restrain the crowd.(Photo Credit: Salvan)=0=

On September 18, 2008 in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church at 90th Street, New York, NY, Mary Ann Dalangin and Romeo Ensalada exchanged wedding vows witnessed by their respective families, friends, and relatives. The beautiful bride is the daughter of long-time family friend, Fronie Brucal-Dalangin of Naga City and hubby Ernie Dalangin of Batangas. The happy reception was held at Woodbury Country Club in Woodbury, New York. UP Ibalon sends its congratulations and felicitations to the lucky newly weds. =0=
