PostHeaderIcon Earthquake damage and death toll in Samoa and Indonesia rise

More than 150 died in the powerful earthquake that rocked the South Pacific islands of Samoa. The 8.3 intensity tremblor generated a tsunami that leveled villages in the islands.

Meanwhile, the succeeding 7.6 earthquake that followed in Indonesia on Wednesday, Septtember 30, 2009 brought death and destruction to villages of Sumatra. Indonesian officials placed the death toll so far to have reached 777.

"The president ordered the military to deploy emergency response teams from Jakarta, West Sumatra and North Sumatra provinces. He said the military will provide earth-moving equipment to clear the rubble." ---AP (10/01/09, Kotarumalos, A)

The huge quake which originated from the outer coast occurred 150 miles south of Pandang, a city of about 1 million people. The scary tremblor destroyed more than a thousand buildings including worships houses, shopping malls, and homes. Most of the collapsed buildings were located in the commercial district.

The shaking was felt as far as Malaysia and Singapore. Thousands were feared to have been trapped in flattened buildings as screams were heard from the rubble. A strong quake with a magnitude of 8.3 in the Richter scale hit the Samoan Islands in the Pacific triggering a tsunami of about 1.6 meters in height in Pago-Pago, American Samoa.

No reports of casualties and damage have so far been reported. A tsunami warning was raised in the southern Pacific region as a result of the quake which occurred at about 6:50 AM, local time on Tuesday, September 29, 2009. (Photo Credit: Flovic)

UPDATE: Subsequent reports revealed that at least 14 died when a tsunami surged into the islands of Tutuilla and Leone. An unspecified number was also reportedly killed in the Samoan Island. A village was quickly flattened with the generated big wave that rose to about 5 to 13 feet. Many people ran to higher ground up the mountain when the tsunami warning was raised, but was later recinded. =0=

PostHeaderIcon Strong quake kills at least 32 people in Indonesia

A quake of 7 in the Richter scale rocked the Indonesian island of Java causing deaths to at least 32 people and injuring undetermined number of people. Most deaths and injuries were caused by collapsed houses and fallen buildings destroyed by the strong tremblor which occurred at daytime 3 P.M (4 AM E.T.) on September 2, 2009.

In the mountainous city of Tasikmalaya,in West Java, panicked people ran into the streets as many damaged houses and buildings fell. Shaking buildings and interrupting power lines, the earthquake was felt in the capital city of Jakarta where people scampered into the streets and mass evacuation in the business district was undertaken.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was about 190 kilometers offshore southeast of Jakarta, about 50 km deep. No tsunami was reported. Reuters/ Pikiran Rakyat Daily) =0=

A huge earthquake rocked northwest Mexico today, Monday August 3, 2009, registering 6.9 in the Richter’s scale. The tremblor caused buildings in California to shudder raising fears of a tsunami. No significant casualty and physical damage were so far reported.

“The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck inside the Sea of Cortez, 76 miles (122 km) from the town of Santa Isabel on the Baja California peninsula and was 6.2 miles (10 km) deep. The figures were revised from its initial estimates. There were no initial reports of deaths or serious damage. Baja California, home to desert and mountains, is sparsely populated.”---Reuters (08/03/09)

PostHeaderIcon Immigrant Filipinos among victims in Italy’s earthquake

Many are wondering how the people in the medieval city of L Aquila and neighboring environs are coping with the strong earthquake that brought death to close to 300 people, damaged more than 10,000 buildings and rendered 58,000 people homeless. 33,000 emergency tents were set up to house those who were displaced.

"There is little industry here, the economy was based on the students from out of town, and they are not coming back for a long time," said Daniele Cerrone, who owned a pub in L'Aquila's ravaged historic center. "In the meantime what are we going to do? Buy clothes and go the pub between ourselves?"----AP/ Yahoo. News (04/15/09, David, A)

The suffering and uncertainty of the earthquake victims aren’t shared by the local Italians alone. Scores of immigrants from Peru, India, the Philippines and neighboring countries who set up their lives in their adopted land sought refuge in tent shelters after their homes were leveled on the ground. Filipino expatriates Julyn Macabenta and Shane Cipriano who lost their home were among the thousands who were displaced.

It will take years for the city ravaged by the earthquake to recover. The rising death toll in the recent earthquake which hit central Italy had gone up to 272 people dead along with 15,000 injured victims. About 100 were listed to be in serious condition. Pope Benedict XVI expressed his intention to visit the affected villages and towns to be with the earthquake victims.



Many buildings which include historic ancient edifices, numbering to about 10-15,000, either crumbled or suffered severe damage all across 26 settlements surrounding the city of L Aquila. Amidst sporadic after-shocks, 28,000 people lined the streets to seek food and shelter.

In a report by the National Institute of Geophysicis and Vulcanology prior to the earthquake, many buildings in Italy’s vulnerable zones are in danger of suffering damages when seismic activity strikes. Ninety-two (92) people were reportedly killed in an earthquake which struck central Italy on April 6, 2007 injuring scores of people and leaving about 50,000 homeless. The tremblor which registered 6.3 in magnitude heavily destroyed the city of L’Aquila prompting Prime Minister Berlusconi to declare a state of emergency.

“Some surrounding villages, where a greater proportion of homes were older, are feared to have fared even worse. People in Tempera, a few kilometres east of L'Aquila, told the Guardian that virtually every house in the historic village centre had been flattened, with many people feared dead.”----Guardian.co.uk (04/06/09, Hooper, J; Walker P)

Rising death toll has been reported in L’Aquila which is in a state of chaos. Dozens of buildings, a big proportion are old, have collapsed as rescue workers race with time to save survivors trapped in the rubble.

Makeshift shelters, mobile hospitals, and tents are being dispatched in the region to help in the worst calamity in the area since 2002. Humanitarian help and offer for assistance poured in from neighboring countries. (Photo Credit: Seele) =0=

UPDATE: Later counts of those who perished and suffered injuries placed the dead to about 150. The injured numbered 1,500 and is increasing. Many people who lost their homes had to stay out in the open for fear of another tremblor.

That’s what occurred in this aerial photo of an eruption of a volcano deep in the Pacific seabed, about 63 kilometers (39 miles) from Nuku’alofa, the capital of Tonga, a country in South Pacific.

The undersea eruption on March 18, 2009 was heralded by a strong earthquake that registered 7.9 nine in the Richter’s scale. A tsunami warning was raised, but luckily did not occur. Is the total number of ships hijacked by Somali pirates on since November 5, 2008 in the Aden Gulf. The latest hijacked ships are operated by the Islamic Republic of Iran and that of Saudi Arabia, a super oil tanker carrying $100 million worth of crude oil. In the past ransoms were paid to recover the ships, but nations are finding ways to foil piracy in the busiest sea lane of the world.

Is the reported number of people who contracted typhoid fever in Quezon. Caused by Salmonella typhosa, the diarrheal disease with systemic manifestations is linked with contaminated water supply. The Department of Health (DOH,) advises boiling of water and frequent hand-washing to counter the spread of the disease. Cone-shaped Mayon Volcano which spews intermittent plumes on its crater and shows definite signs of restiveness is the object of close watch by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PhilVolcs). It was reported that 900 earthquakes of varying intensity rocked the city since August 15, 2008. GMANewsTV (09/07/08)

As a result, Legazpi's city council voted on a resolution to have buildings inspected for damages. Citizens of the picturesque locale which nestles on the foot of the volcano prepare to assess the structural worthiness of malls, schools, churches and other infrastructures which might have sustained damage. While the Penafrancia fiesta boils and gains steam in Naga City for its September 2008 celebration, majestic Mayon Volcano in Albay on whose feet Legazpi City rests, shows signs of restiveness and possible eruption. White steam clouds billow on its summit.

For the last few weeks, an advisory to keep distance---at least 6 kilometers away from the crater is in place by Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PhiVolcs) as series of minor tremors of tectonic origin are felt in the area. Even Taal volcano in Batangas also shows similar activity; light earthquakes are felt in the last 24 hours. Inquirer (09/02/08, Aguilar E.).

A moderately strong earthquake which registered 6 in the Richter scale occurred in Legazpi City and Virac, Catanduanes on August 15, 2008. The quake whose epicenter is 42 kilometers northeast of Sorsogon, Bicol, was Intensity 5 in Sorsogon City and Irosin, Sorsogon; Intensity 3 in Naga City, Camarines Sur; Bulan, Sorsogon; Roxas City; Masbate City; Catarman, Samar; and Intensity 2 in Palo, Leyte; Borongan, Eastern Samar; and Silay, Negros Occidental. Meanwhile restive Mayon Volcano in Albay, Philippines is showing signs of possible eruption; a pyroclastic flow can occur anytime. Ed Laguerta, Philvocs resident volcanologist said there is a build up of magma in the volcano. Part of the Pacific region's "ring of fire," Mayon has erupted more than 50 times since 1616, the last was in June to August 2006. Four months after the last eruption, about 1,000 people died when Tyhpoons Milenyo and Reming dislodged tons of volcanic debris that swept villages near the volcano.

In preparation for an emergency, Albay Gov. Joey Salceda instructed disaster officials not to allow people within 6 kilometer radius from the crater which spewed a 200-meter ash and showed intensified summit glow in the past weeks. Bicol Mail (08/15/08, Arguelles M; Barcia R.) =0=
