The Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotees Association (OLPDA) composed of mainly Filipinos of Bicol roots in the Northeast is conducting an advent retreat this Satuday, November 28, 2009 at 10 AM to 3 PM in Our Lady of Victories School basement located at corner Ege Street and Westside Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey.

In preparation for the coming yuletide celebration, the religious recollection will tackle among others the relevance of the saving birth of Jesus Christ in the modern world. Topics include “Priesthood” and “The Devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.” FR. Joe D’ Amico, pastor of St. Aloysius Church in Jersey City will be the speaker.

PostHeaderIcon 2.5 million Muslims on a pilgrimage to Mecca

About 2.5 Islamists have arrived in Mecca, Saudi Arabia to participate in the annual pilgrimage amidst fears of swine flu and possibility of stampede. The holy ritual of Muslim believers coming together annually doesn’t come without risks. At least 4 people were reported to have died of H1N1 flu. There were deaths from panicked jostling, pushing, and trampling which marred past observances of the religious tradition.

Three years ago, 364 people died after a stampede broke at the entrance of the crowded Jamarat bridge, east of Mecca. A total of 1,426 pilgrims lost their lives after being trampled on in a fatal stampede in the crowded tunnel in Mina.

To avoid a repeat of tragedies, about 100,000 security men were called to manage the peace and order of the place. Hundreds of cameras were set up to watch the conduct of the religious celebration. An extimated 20,000 healthcare personnel were made available to give medical services to the pilgrims. A 300,000 square meter expansion of the site had been on the works to accommodate a million more visitors to the religious site.(Photo Credit: Life.com) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Ban of crucifix in classrooms in Italy infuriates Catholics & other Christian denominations

It is the sobering message of the times. If one is not paying attention, the anti-Christians, the secularists and those against faith-based beliefs have been assaulting religion again. In a recent ruling by the European Court of Human Rights, the crucifix, the symbol of the suffering Jesus Christ revered by Christians, has been banned in Italian schools. The court rationalized its caustic decision by saying that faith-based symbols are “breach of religious rights of children.”

The case against the crucifix was lodged by atheists----Soile Lautsi, a Finnish immigrant and her Italian husband who protested that the classroom display of the cross violated the freedom and religious rights of their two children. For their complaint, they were awarded EU$5,000 as damages. Seven judges of the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg upheld their argument adding:

"The presence of the crucifix could easily be interpreted by pupils of all ages as a religious sign and they would feel that they were being educated in a school environment bearing the stamp of a given religion.

This could be encouraging for religious pupils, but also disturbing for pupils who practised other religions or were atheists, particularly if they belonged to religious minorities." ---MailOnline (11/04/09, Pisa, N.)

The Italians, the Vatican authorities along with many Christian believers worldwide expressed their outrage over the ruling. Angry reactions came from abroad. In cyberspace, Catholics and other denominational Christians expressed dissatisfaction. All over Italy, mayors pledged to disobey the unfriendly ruling.

Prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, a conservative, asserted the removal of the symbol of Jesus in classrooms "denies the rights and roots of Europeans." He said banning the crucifix is not acceptable to Italians. Msgr. Vincenzo Paglia, the head of the Italian bishop’s intercultural dialogue commission commented the court's decision was "irresponsible".

“They are creating a Europe without identity and tradition,” said Alessandra Mussolini, the granddaughter of Benito Mussolini, who in his time ordered the display of the crucifix.

Foreign minister Franco Frattini said the prohibition is a death blow to “a Europe of values and rights.” Agriculture minister Luca Zaia remarked the crucifix’s removal is shameful. Antonio Mazzocchi, a Berlusconi ally, noted Europe is forgetting its Christian heritage.

Mara Bizzoto, a parliamentarian, asked why the European court only ruled against the crucifix but spared Islamc symbols such as veils, burqas, and niqabs. Are the court members afraid of the Islamic faith? Is it clear that there is double standard in antagonizing Christians while avoiding the ire of Muslims, a growing immigrant ethnic group with known violent minority in their ranks?

Christians must stand up and be resolute in countering the growing anti-Christian hostility of radical secularists, agnostics, and atheists who wish to throw away faith and social traditions of believers. The controversial ban on crucifixes in the classroom is reminiscent of the persecution of early Christians. Prejudice against the Christians has gone overboard and must be rejected. PostHeaderIcon Pope John Paul II may be beatified next year

During the visit of Rome mayor Gianni Alemmano to Pope John Paul II’s native town of Krakow, Poland, he said that the beatification processs of the holy pontiff might come early next year in April, the fifth anniversary of the Pope’s death. If so, the process of Pope John Paul II’s canonization could turn out to be the fastest, surpassing that of Mother Teresa known for her charity work among the poorest in Calcutta, India. Pope John Paul II was succeeded by the current Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI who started the Polish pontiff's beatification two months after he died in April 5, 2005.

The beatification which leads to sainthood involves a close scrutiny of the life of the candidate including a consideration of a miracle attributed to his intercession. Oftentimes it involves a complete recovery from an incurable medical condition documented scientifically. In the case of Pope John Paul II, Vatican authorities are looking into a reported cure of a French nun from Parkinson’s disease.

The correspondence of Pope John Paul with a Polish woman Wanda Poltawska, 88 years old, whom he met in 1962 is an interesting aspect of his life which will be examined in his path for sainthood. A book based on excerpts from their letters will be published early next year in Italy. Vatican officials believe there is no romantic link between Poltawska and the pope. PostHeaderIcon First Pinoy diocesan priest in Kuwait

On October 9, 2009, Fr. Ruben Barrameda of the Legazpi Diocese in Bicol was designated to serve in the Apostolic Vicariate of Kuwait. Supposed to be the first diocesan priest to take official religious duty in the Middle East and Gulf area, the Bicolano clergyman would be under the jurisdiction of the vicariate of Kuwait.

A mass in tribute to Our Lady of Penafrancia was celebrated by Fr. Barrameda together with Bishop Lucio B. Quiambao of Legazpi City. Joined by Fr. Rolando Panesa and Fr. Angelos, the solemn Eucharistic celebration was attended by the Philippine Ambassador to Kuwait Ricardo Endaya, government dignitaries, and about 1,000 members of the Catholic congregation.

PostHeaderIcon Prelate rues over slanted coverage of Penafrancia fiesta

When Tong Pilar, my friend and classamate in New Jersey told me that a brawl erupted during the Traslacion in the Penafrancia celebration in Naga City, I felt sad. I thought this year’s fiesta was marred by a few irresponsible people of Maogmang Lugar.

My friend’s story of seeing in TV a priest assaulted during the Friday procession was very disconcerting. As far as I could recall, such disdainful behavior did not happen when I was growing up in that peaceful city. The bad news came to New York in tandem with the local government promoting a secular program of public drinking, gay beauty contests, and other “demeaning” activities that wasn’t in synch with the fiesta’s religious purpose. With civic activities that tend to denigrate Ina, I thought, Penafrancia had gone to the dogs.



Daet Bishop Gilbert Gacera however had a different take on the issue. He said the Penafrancia celebration this year was supposed to be as peaceful as before. It was the media who sensationalized the melee which painted an ugly picture of the whole event. The isolated incident was aired in the internet and in major national TVs as though it dominated the celebration. This he said wasn’t true.

As a result of the bad publicity, Bicolanos were unduly portrayed in a bad light. The peaceful procession was made to appear that it ended in trouble. Bishop Garcera was saddened by the lopsided coverage of the fiesta which came at a time when the Catholic Church made effort to make Ina’s tribute more spiritually meaningful at the eve of her tercenary. PostHeaderIcon Clash between Penafrancia tradition & the secular festivities of Naga City government

With the backing of the Archdiocese of Caceres and the Roman Catholic clergy, religious groups of Naga City complained to the Naga City government for reneging on a bilateral agreement to ban activities that didn’t reflect the faith-based observance of the Penafrancia fiesta. In part, the letter sent by the laity to City Mayor Jesse Robredo read:

“We are disappointed and dismayed when we saw the calendar of activities prepared by the city government of Naga published in its widely distributed Viva Naga, Viva Bicolandia pamphlet. Viva Naga and Viva Bicolandia Festival include activities that have been banned within the novena on moral grounds. In the joint statement, it is very clear that pageants and beer plazas should not be held within the period of the novena.”---Vox Bicol (09/13/09)

The letter was sent by concerned citizens representing groups like the Archdiocesan Council of the Laity, Apostleship of Prayer, Our Lady of Peñafrancia Association, Holy Name Society, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Mother Butlers' Guild, Parish Renewal Experience (PREX), Couples of Christ, Pastoral Council of Bagumbayan Sur, Knights of Columbus, Children of Mary, and Visita Domiciliaria among others, airing their disapproval to government-sponsored revelries like gay beauty pageants, street parties, and drinking fests.

PostHeaderIcon INC spiritual leader Ka Erdy laid to rest

On Monday, September7, 2009, Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) executive minister Erano “Erdy” Manalo who died last week of cardiopulmonary arrest was buried in the central temple of the religious organization in Quezon City.

Thousands of INC members flocked for the viewing and watched the last rites under rainy skies. The religious group counts an estimated 2 to 8 million members which is part of a political force during elections. Many prominent politicians including Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo paid their last respects and attended the funeral.

Ka Erdy was temporarily buried at the center of a huge hall while on wait for his final resting place being readied beside his father and INC founder, Felix Manalo. Since the mortal remains of Erano Manalo, Iglesia ni Cristo’s (INC) supreme spiritual leader was shown for public viewing, an estimated 55,000 mourners came to pay their respect.

President Gloria M. Arroyo declared a time of national mourning till the burial of the religious leader on September 12, 2009. Church spokesman Bienvenido Santiago announced that Erano Manalo, the supreme leader and successor of Felix Manalo, founder of Iglesia ni Christo (INC,) died in his home at the age of 84 on Monday, August 31, 2009 at 3:53 PM. Mourned by his flock, he was born in January 2, 1925---the fifth child of the church founder who died in 1963.

A friend to many, Ka Erdy as he was fondly called led the growth of the religious group with about 2 to 8 million members mostly in the Tagalog regions and others spread globally in about 60 countries.

In 2004, Ka Erdy supported Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo to be president. Having a strong political clout and grounded in his religious belief, the influential religious leader asked his members to participate in politics. He could persuade them to cast their ballot, as high as 75% of block voting, for a particular endorsed candidate.

“It is widely known that the INC's power lies in the tagubilin emanating from Manalo and other church leaders, orders that cannot be disputed by members and can be used to command voting blocs around the country... While Manalo often used his power to support certain candidates in the past - aside from Marcos and Estrada, he also backed Eduardo Cojuangco in 1992 - he famously wielded his clout during the EDSA Tres demonstrations that reached the gates of Malacañang, arguably still the most serious threat the Arroyo administration has faced. According to Dr. Ray Melchor Santos, Manalo, the executive minister of the religious group died of cardiopulmonary arrest. His remains will be taken to the INC’s central temple in Quezon City.

Leading the devotees of the Our Lady of Penafrancia (OLPDA,) Fr. Joseph G. Marabe celebrated the San Lorenzo Ruiz Mass on Saturday, August1, 2009 in the SLR chapel located at 378 Broom Street, New York, New York.

Boy Cabaero, chairman of OLPDA and wife Dina coordinated the event attended by the officers, members and supporters of the association. A simple but lively fellowship followed after the mass.

Boy Cabaero, this year's chairman of the Our Lady of Penafrancia Devotees Association (OLPDA) in cooperation with fellow officers and members of the organization announce the planned celebration of the feast of Ina this coming Septermber 2009 in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut (Tri-State) Area.

The religious group that Erano Manalo established 95 years ago celebrated its anniversary with a gathering of its members in Metro Manila and other cities in the country. A huge crowd of thousands assembled in the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex as an expression of thanksgiving, solidarity and faith.

“These enormous gatherings in Metro Manila are but two of the 14 celebratory religious assemblies simultaneously held in key cities in 12 regions of the country, plus five more gatherings in four other countries.” Philstar (07/27/09, Araneta, S.)

The special day was observed with the charitable offering of free medical and dental services, distribution of food to the needy and outreach to underserved and poor villages in the country. On March 25, 2009, Libmanan in Camarines Sur had been established as the 57th diocese of the Philippines. According to Most Rev. Msgr. Jose R. Rojas, Jr., the declaration by the Vatican coincided with the feast of the Annunciation, making Libmanan the 5th diocese in the Archdiocese of Caceres.

The Canonical Erection of the Diocese of Libmanan is scheduled on June 19, 2009 to be held at Cathedral of St. James the Apostle, Libmanan, Camarines Sur with Naga Metropolitan Archibishop Msgr. Leonardo Legaspi presiding.

Msgr. Rojas is the first bishop of the newly created diocese over which he supervises 36 priests. Before its elevation, Libmanan became a prelature through a decree by then Pope John Paul II with 16 parishes in towns of Sipocot, Cabusao, Ragay, Del Gallego, Lupi, Libmanan, Pasacao, Pamaplona, San Fernando , Milaor, and Minalabac.
