PostHeaderIcon 17 bodies recovered from Air France crash site

After days of fruitless search, rescuers of Air France flight no. 447 which crashed last week in the Atlantic ocean reported finding at least 17 bodies floating at sea. The remains were probably part of the 229 passengers and crew who died when the plane mysteriously fell from the sky. To bodies would be brought to the mainland in the coastal city of Recife for identification.

The disaster is the worst aviation accident since 2001, and unprecedented in Air France's 75-year history. ---www.channelnewsasia.com / AFP (06/08/09)

With no hope of finding survivors, Brazilian and French authorities continue to search an area of 1,1000 kilometers in the northeast coast of Brazil to recover remnants of the aircraft whose black box is yet to be recovered. Relatives and friends of those who vanished with the ill-fated Air France carrier which plunged in the Atlantic Ocean gathered outside the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France on June 3, 2009. In a solemn remembrance, they recalled the memory of the 228 passengers and crew still missing since the AF Flight 447 crashed on Monday, June 1. 2009 on the way Paris to Rio de Janeiro.

Attempts to find the exact wreckage location and the plane’s black box have so far been unsuccessful. No traces of survivors or bodies of those who might have died are recovered. Pieces of wreckage reported to be from the ill-fated aircraft turned out to be debris from other sources. The cause of the crash remains a mystery. (Photo Credit: (AFP/POOL/ Edme, B)=0=

PostHeaderIcon Italy’s rising quake death toll

Ninety-two (92) people were reportedly killed in an earthquake which struck central Italy on April 6, 2007 injuring scores of people and leaving about 50,000 homeless. The tremblor which registered 6.3 in magnitude heavily destroyed the city of L’Aquila prompting Prime Minister Berlusconi to declare a state of emergency.

“Some surrounding villages, where a greater proportion of homes were older, are feared to have fared even worse. People in Tempera, a few kilometres east of L'Aquila, told the Guardian that virtually every house in the historic village centre had been flattened, with many people feared dead.”----Guardian.co.uk (04/06/09, Hooper, J; Walker P)

Rising death toll has been reported in L’Aquila which is in a state of chaos. Dozens of buildings, a big proportion are old, have collapsed as rescue workers race with time to save survivors trapped in the rubble.

Makeshift shelters, mobile hospitals, and tents are being dispatched in the region to help in the worst calamity in the area since 2002. Humanitarian help and offer for assistance poured in from neighboring countries. (Photo Credit: Seele) =0=

UPDATE: Later counts of those who perished and suffered injuries placed the dead to about 150. The injured numbered 1,500 and is increasing. Many people who lost their homes had to stay out in the open for fear of another tremblor.

PostHeaderIcon With 17, 000 islands, Indonesia shares maritime woes with the Philippines

The stormy weather sucked in the Indonesian ferry Tertai Prima and disappeared in the sea on Sunday, January 11, 2009. Two days after the 700-ton (635-metric ton) inter-island vessel which plied the route in a country with 17,000 islands sank, an undetermined number travelers, part of at least 250 passengers and 17 crew onboard, had been missing and accounted for.

“The Teratai Prima, which radioed that it was in trouble just before dawn Sunday, capsized about 30 miles (50 kilometers) off the coast of western Sulawesi. It was headed for Samarinda on the Indonesian side of Borneo.”---AP (01/12/09, Ahmad, Y)

There are reports many are still alive waiting for a rescue. Horrid tales of those who survived spoke of children and elderly drowning in the fierce waters brought by cyclone Charlotte. Thirty four (34) were so far rescued and 40 escaped. Of the dead, the Indonesian government promised $2,400 each, a measly sum for each life lost that could have been more valuable and productive. In December 2006, similar sinking occurred in Java-Borneo area killing nearly 2/3 of the 600 passengers.
This story is shared in more grim terms by us Filipinos who live with 7,000 islands.

It brings recall of the woeful maritime tragedies that occur in our waters with frequency and lethality greater than in Indonesia. Most of these sea accidents in both countries are blamed on inclement weather, poor supervision and negligence of maritime and government officials, overloading, equipment failure, human error among others. We call on our respective government authorities to do something more than the status quo to prevent the next boat sinking waiting at the bend. PostHeaderIcon 50 killed and hundreds trapped in Haitian school collapse

The church-supervised school called La Promesse Evangelique College (Promise) in Haiti’s capital city Port-au Prince, spontaneously collapsed killing 50 and trapping undetermined number of people, mostly attending school.

Frantic rescuers rushed to the scene to seek out 200 to 700 children suspected to be trapped in the rubble. The death toll is expected to rise. United Nations peace keepers (some Filipinos included) and Haitian Red Cross members were there to assist in finding and saving survivors.

According to reports, the building’s upper floor was under construction, but it was unclear whether this could be the cause of the collapse. It was said the building was repaired before.

Haitian President Rene Preval promised an investigation plus inspection of schools to ascertain the structural soundness of the school buildings.



Situated in the Caribbean, Haiti is among the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere and shoddy construction of buildings isn’t uncommon. This is an unfortunate situation on which countries like the Philippines can learn from. (Photo Credits: BBC: AP) =0=

UPDATE: As of Saturday, November 8, 2008, the death toll rose from 50 to 82.

November 12, 2008: A second school collapse partially damaged Divine Grace School, injuring 9 people, barely a week after the incident in Promessa School.
