PostHeaderIcon Gate crashers enter the White House

In the US presidential palace where visits of movie stars and celebrities have become quite common, Michaela Salehi and her husband Tareq, a couple among Viriginia’s horse-country set were able to come close to Pres. Barack Obama during a state dinner honoring Manmohan Singh, the Indian prime minister. They were able to attend the event without being the guest list.

The coming to the White House of the Salehis without invitation was an insult to the secret service which was supposed to be thorough in protecting the president and the seat of American power. USA is just lucky that the guys were not part of a terrorism network which bombs and kills people. What if the gate-crashers brought with them biologic agents, toxins and deadly chemicals?

Eerily and perhaps a warning, Tareq Salahi is someone from the American Task Force on Palestine, a group that lobbies for Palestinian causes. According to reports the attention-getting couple who had “wonderful” moments with Obama were responsible for India joining for the first time in America's Polo Cup at the National Mall in Washington on June 11 and 12. Many security experts see the gate-crashing incident as serious breakdown of security. (Photo Credits: Getty Images) =0=

PostHeaderIcon IAEA now says Iran can produce a nuclear bomb

After years of denying allegations by the United States and other UN-member nations that Iran is pursuing a nuclear program to develop a bomb, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) tasked to monitor the rogue country has admitted that Tehran has the ability to produce a nuclear bomb. nder the shadows, the Islamic country has worked on make a missile system which can bring an atomic warhead. In a confidential report seen by The Associated Pres, IAEA declares the following:

• The IAEA's assessment that Iran worked on developing a chamber inside a ballistic missile capable of housing a warhead payload "that is quite likely to be nuclear."

• That Iran engaged in "probable testing" of explosives commonly used to detonate a nuclear warhead — a method known as a "full-scale hemispherical explosively driven shock system."

• An assessment that Iran worked on developing a system "for initiating a hemispherical high explosive charge" of the kind used to help spark a nuclear blast.---AP; Yahoo.news (09/17/09, Jahn, G.)

The confidential document was what the United States had been referring as a “secret annex” which the IAEA earlier tagged as misinformation. For many months, USA, Israel, France, and other nations have been demanding IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei to release the information.

Early this year, IAEA revealed that Iran had produced more than 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of low-enriched, or fuel-grade, uranium, more than enough to make radioactive uranium for a bomb. It is likely that very soon Iran will be able to install a medium range missile with a nuclear explosive device.

The world wakes up to the grim reality that a system of surveillance like what IAEA does doesn’t work consistently. After years of denials and lies, Iran’s nuclear program, pursued under the very nose of the United Nations, has succeeded this far since the inception of its nuclear program in 1984 during the Islamic revolution. With unstable countries run by religious zealots and hardline radicals, going nuclear, the world cannot be far from peaceful and safe. (Photo Credit: sonyapryr) =0=

PostHeaderIcon Obama drops missile defense in Europe

To add to the administration rocking the boat in the hope making a better and safer America, Pres. Barack Obama announced a new approach in missile defense in Europe, a turn-about in the Bush policy’s policy of putting a long–range ballistic system in the region to defend countries like Poland, Czech Republic, and Israel from countries like like Russia, Iran, and North Korea. America’s allies in Europe are disappointed and they see the plan as a weakening of Europe's defenses.

“He says his decision was guided in large part by new intelligence that shows Iran is focusing on the development of medium and short-range missiles. The original missile defense policy was based on the assumption that Tehran was seeking a long-range capability. This new ballistic missile defense program will best address the threat posed by Iran's ongoing ballistic missile defense program," the president said. VOA (09/17/09)

Not knowing the back-door deals surrounding this plan, the effects of withdrawal are still unclear. But Republicans in the US Congress are quickly critical of the policy. This comes at a time that Iran is close to making its nuclear bomb to threaten its neighbors.

John Boehner, a Republican in the U.S. Congress says President Obama's decision will empower the Russians at the expense of America’s friends in Europe. Obama’s security plan will be part of the issues to be tackled in the coming UN meeting or in the economic summit of the Group of 20 where Russian President Dimitri Medyedev is expected to attend. PostHeaderIcon Taliban steps up violence as election draws near in Afghanistan

Trying to thwart the election scheduled on Thursday, August 20, 2009, Taliban forces increased their campaign of violence in the capital city of Kabul in Afghanistan killing at least 8 people and leaving about 50 wounded. Two Afghan staff of the United Nations and one foreign soldier were among the latest casualties.

A suicide bomber directed an explosive-bearing vehicle in a busy highway. Missiles were fired close to the presidential palace and defense ministry. In Uruzgan province, an insurgent attacked a polling station, leaving four Afghan soldiers and two civilians dead.

For the election, some 300,000 Afghan and international troops and police officers, are tasked with protecting 29,000 polling stations, with what the government describes as a four-tier ring of security.”---Voice of America (08/18/09, Herman, S.)

Dubbed as "a day of peace, the election is expected to allow about 80% of electorates to cast their votes. A huge electoral participation will help in bringing unity, curtail corruption and reconciliation among warring ethnic groups.
